So far this season, La Salle hasn’t faced an opponent anywhere near the caliber of a Greater Catholic League South team.

Nonetheless, a couple of blowout victories are exactly what La Salle needed, especially for a defense looking to build as much confidence as it can before grueling league play begins in a month.

Coming off a dominating defensive performance in last week’s opener against Lakota West, La Salle put the clamps on Covington Catholic’s spread offense in an easy 50-7 win over the Colonels on Friday night at Lancer Stadium.

La Salle held CovCath’s offense to 202 yards — just 60 in the first half when the Lancers’ first-teamers were in the game. LaSalle rolled up 594 total yards on offense.

“We were just clicking tonight,” said La Salle coach Tom Grippa, whose team is ranked No. 4 in the Enquirer Division I coaches’ poll.

With several returning stars on offense, the guys on the other side of the ball seemed overshadowed. But the likes of seniors Kyle Herth, Jayson Bresnen and Ben Ingle and junior Joe Burger have certainly gained their spot in the spotlight.

The Lancers have allowed just one offensive touchdown this season, and that didn’t happen until midway through the third quarter Friday after La Salle had already built a 40-0 lead. One of those scores came on Ball State-bound Ingle’s 20-yard interception return with 10:28 left in the first half.

“Our first-team defense scrimmaged our first-team offense this week and won,” Grippa said. “Our defense is really good. Our kids have a goal to get to the playoffs, and dare I say, win the GCL this year. To do that, you have to have a championship-caliber defense. They had it at X (St. Xavier), at Elder and at Moeller the years they won the GCL.”

Said CovCath coach Dave Wirth, a Moeller graduate: “This might be (La Salle’s) year in the South.”

Senior quarterback Drew Kummer and LaSalle’s first-string offense had almost no trouble driving the field in the three quarters it was on the field. After a sluggish start in last week’s 28-6 victory over Lakota West, the Lancers scored on all five of their offensive possessions in the first half.

Kummer, the Miami University recruit, completed 11 of 15 passes for 244 yards and two TDs. Rodriguez Coleman had four receptions for 102 yards and a TD, while fellow senior Matt Woeste had four catches for 92 yards and a score.

Coleman’s 67-yard reception on the third play of the game set-up the Lancers’ first score.

“After his catch, the ball rolled downhill for us and uphill for them,” Grippa said.
CovCath was playing without its top defensive player — injured senior defensive back Paul Ritter, who is expected to return next week, Wirth said.

Coming off last week’s 54-21 win over Lexington Catholic, CovCath suffered its second blowout loss of the season. The Colonels still are adjusting offensively with sophomore starting quarterback Blake Bir moving into the starting role this season.

Additionally, junior Michael Best, one of the Colonels’ top returning receivers, played for the first time this season on Friday.

Wirth said the Lancers simply outmuscled CovCath.

“Disappointing,” said Wirth, whose team is No. 10 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll. “I think we lost a lot of one-on-one battles.”
