CovCath is also. Using the figures when the schools were last realigned, CovCath would have been a 4A school and Highlands would have been a 3A school. Both Highlands and CovCath play 5A currently. I think Somerset was a 1A school that is now playing 2A. There are a total of 7 schools playing up if I recall properly. That's a very small percentage of the roughly 200 schools playing football and the KHSAA only permits a move up if a school would be geographically isolated in its true class. For example, Highlands would have been the only 3A school and CovCath the only 4A school in all of N. Ky if they had been forced to play in their true class. A school is not permitted to move down even if it is geographically isolated because of the KHSAA's philosophy that the number of boys enrolled at a school can have a large impact on the level of play of a school's football program because of the number of players needed to participate in a football game and the very physical nature of the game. Injuries to a couple of players at a small school has a much greater disparate effect on a team with a 100 boys in the school than it does on a team with 1400 boys in the school.

I'm not sure why Highlands would, the projected 4A class would be a tougher challenge and help their national ranking alot more than playing up the 5A would. In 4A they'd have Catholic, Boyle, Cov Cath, Johnson Central among others. In 5A all there would be is Harlan Co and Lone Oak. To me that wouldn't make any sense if their goal is a national championship to play up to a class that doesn't offer the level of competition that 4A would. Plus with their being so many 4A teams around them it would be tough to convince the KHSAA that they would need to play up for geographical reasons. Wanting to play this team or that team or to win a national title isn't a reason the KHSAA would approve them playing up for.

HHS elected to play up under the current system and was approved by the KHSAA for geographical reasons. They haven't and likely will not appeal to play up under the new realignment starting next season.

HHS' motivation for playing up a class certaily wasn't fueled by "national championship" aspirations. The class HHS plays in has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not they get national recognition. Aside from Trinity and St X, there are no other KY teams that would give them a boost by beating them.

Doesn't Russellville play up.

Somerset is actually supposed to be right at the borderline of 1A-2A but are playing up in 3A because it makes more sense geographically. I believe Russellville is also supposed to be 1A and is playing up in 3A.

I believe the initial post referred to who currently is playing up; not who will elect to play up. No one officially knows yet who will request a move up. But you are right in that if Highlands was to request a move up under the new alignment, it would be denied.

Thanks for the correction. I couldn't remember the specifics on Somerset.

5A has Bowling Green, Owensboro, Christian County, John Hardin, Covington Catholic, Ashland, and Johnson Central.

So Highlands has plenty of competition in 5A, as they'll have to earn a state championship. Plus, I would take all of those 5A teams I mentioned over any 4A team, except for Bell County & Boyle County.
