NKY: Highlights indicate good season ahead
#1
In preparation for football season, I spent part of this week in film study.

No, not that kind of film study, not the kind coaches do.

I wasn't looking for formations or keys or tendencies. Nah, this was more of the reclining, popcorn-eating type of viewing - just me and YouTube and recent highlights of some of the area's best players heading into the 2010 season.

The highlights:

Trevan Brown, Boone County: The Miami University recruit made one of the area's best plays of 2009 - a tip and catch for a touchdown against Highlands - and also made a great block against Campbell County on a Nate Alford touchdown run.

Chris Kelly, Newport Central Catholic: He has a few big runs on his highlight reel, but the best play is probably a fumble-causing hit against Beechwood.

Travis Elliott, Ryle: On a 24-yard run against NewCath, he broke five tackles. He also did a pretty good Earl Campbell impression during a jersey-ripping touchdown run against Campbell County.

Troy Timmerman, Covington Catholic: The defensive end returned a fumble 91 yards for a touchdown against Highlands, avoiding the pursuit of Bluebirds speedster Austin Collinsworth. It would be unfair to say Timmerman outran Collinsworth, but Collinsworth didn't catch him, either.

Conner Hempel, Ryle: He showed his arm and touch on a variety of throws, most impressively on a fade route touchdown to Trenton Fugate.

Damian Oden, Holmes: Oden has one of the area's most impressive highlight reels. He chased down players from behind as if he had them on a rod and reel, showing he's a great open-field tackler. And his offensive highlights are probably better.

Desean Peterson, Holmes: This one is also very impressive, especially considering the highlights are from his freshman season. The best play? Take your pick. Peterson can go up and get the ball in traffic. He can run after the catch. He's also one of those kids who can catch the back half of the ball.

Austin Abner, Highlands: He plays very, very fast. And he demonstrated his hitting ability with a big lick against CovCath.

Chad Lawrence, Simon Kenton: In the rain against Ryle, the quarterback showed his playmaking ability with a great cutback run.

Austin Baldwin, Simon Kenton: When he tackles ballcarriers, they stayed tackled.

Tommy Courtney, Holmes: This was a pretty good defense last year, and Courtney was right in the middle of it. You know those guys who stand up running backs and drive them back through the hole? He's one of those.

Jordan Oppenheimer, Boone County: He looks like a fullback and runs like a tailback.

Michael Kremer, Campbell County: The state's top passer avoided a couple would-be tacklers, then threw a 45-yard strike for a touchdown. Very impressive.

It'll be interesting to see what they all do for encores.

Let it be known that Timmerman made a great play but by no means did he outrun AC. If you remember, AC was playing that game hurt and he had a bad angle anyway. Still a great play by the young man for CCH.
