Anderson County 6 - Shelby County 5 (8 innings) (30th District Championship)
#1
Freshman Anna Marie Hyatt smacked a one-out, two-run single to give Anderson County a 6-5 win and the 30th District championship in eight innings Tuesday night.

Hyatt ripped a Jeneca Thomas offering into right field to score Courtney Turpin and courtesy runner Haley Burgin and cap a dramatic three-run rally and give the Lady Bearcats their second district crown in three seasons.

Anderson, which had beaten Shelby twice in the regular season, looked to be in deep trouble after the Lady Rockets had scored twice in the top of the eighth.

However, seventh-grader Corrin Robinson led off with a single, then Turpin walked. Lauren Brown loaded the bases with an infield hit, before Christina Harvey's ground out scored Robinson and set the stage for Hyatt's walk-off hit.

“The coaches told me to relax,” Hyatt said with a grin. “I was nervous.”

Hyatt, who entered the game in the fifth inning, went 2-for-2

“These young kids know what is expected of them,” Anderson coach Brian Glass said. “They have to play like seniors.”

Both teams move on to the Eighth Region tournament, which will be held at Carroll County High School, beginning on Monday, May 31.

Turpin hurt

Anderson pitcher Courtney Turpin was injured as she tried to make a diving stop of Kristina Gramig's soft line drive n the top of the eighth. Turpin lay on the ground for several minutes before throwing one more pitch. Glass brought in Lauren Brown to finish the inning.

Turpin is to be examined on Wednesday. Her status for the regional tournament is not known.

The Rockets lost to Anderson County 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning in the 30th District Championship Tuesday.

After tying up the game 3-3 in the sixth inning, Shelby went up 5-3 in the first extra inning. First, Hannah Stucker’s pop fly fell just short of diving center fielder Christina Harvey to score Becca Mouser. Then with bases loaded, relief pitcher Lauren Brown walked Dee Dee Davis to force a run.

Brown had relieved starter Courtney Turpin, who injured herself diving after a line drive in the previous play.

The Bearcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with two singles and a walk. Harvey’s hard infield hit squeezed in runner Corrin Robinson. Then Anna Marie Hyatt found a gap through the left field to score the go-ahead runs.

Both teams advance to the 8th Region Tournament, which begins Monday at Carroll County. The seeding will be drawn Saturday.
