This week AAU team started at LCC for the 8th graders, coached by the high school JV coach. The reason being is that the main high school coach, did not want any fathers involved, but from gossip I have learned that 2 fathers are helping. The kids for this team were chosen by these 2 fathers, but to my knowledge there were no tryouts held to choose any of these players. The most that these coaches had seen all players play in the county, is only 2 games. The players chosen where either their sons or LCC JV high school coach's girlfriend's brother or family members and friends of the other coaches sons. LCC will never be a state tournament team or until they play by talent not favoritism!!!! Needless to say the 2 coaches kids start, one should start, but the other is questionable. This maybe the reason numbers are dropping for LCC football and basketball programs. How fair is it for kids to work their butts off and not be given an equal chance, because they don't play the buddy system

Congrats to Hazard who won the tourney tonight defeating Roussea, Letcher 8th and Estill Co. Great job boys!

Congrats to Estill County's 8th on the first trip to the Sportsplex... made the finals and lost to Hazard. This team looks to have a lot of potential.

Are you sure about all this? I am sure that the 4 high school coaches have seen the games for all the Letcher County teams. They have seen at least 4-5 games per team and had plenty of time to evaluate the talent.
I am also sure that every 8th grader from ALL the middle schools had an equal chance to make the team thru tryouts. I am sure everyone was given a fair tryout observed by at least one high school coach. You might to check your sources because I am sure this would never happen in Letcher County.
All of the above is sarcasm.

LCC will not be a state tournament team until they start to get quality middle school coaches that are concerned more about fundmentals than about wins or losses and winning a meaningless county championship.
The coach that should be the coach is a Dad but is a whole lot better than the coach that is currently coaching this team.

Congratulations to Hazard what is the record now like 80-3? They are a very good team that is sound fundamentally on offense and defense. They do not have 1 star they 5 stars.

There really wasn't any tryouts held for the AAu team in letcher county. There are alot of talented kids in letcher county and it is not just the 10 or 11 boys picked. If anything they should have had 2 8th grade teams and 2 7th grade teams. We all want Lether County to be the best, but it never will be until we start playing kids by their talent and not by who they are...

Agree with the last sentence but do not think there is enough talent at middle school level for two teams.
Have a tryout take top 15 in grades 5-8 and start a good feeder program for the high school.
Of course that would take effort on the high school coaches to let the coaches know what kind of defense they wanted the kids to learn.
All the middle schools and AAU teams should at least be running the same defense. I do not think that any middle school team ran any resemblance of what the high school program was doing. All 7 middle schools ran a different defense.
The kids are all going to be playing together when they reach high school what better time to do it than March to May.

I agree that maybe the LC team shouldve had tryouts but the chosen 10 were decided on by the high school head coach..with suggestions from the rest of his staff and various middle school coaches who had all seen plenty of middle school bball and coach basketball for a living..they know who can and cannot play on the hs level..so im not arguing against the 10 that are on the team. the fact of the matter is that only 10 will probably make the high school team next year...maybe even less..and maybe 7 or 8 out of the 10 will play all four years...no need for two teams or having more than 10. its extremely hard to play 10 players. there are soo many players in LC that are decently talented after the top 7. I dont think anyone can argue that the top 7 players are not on the AAU team. Yes, 3 are middle school coach's sons and one is the brother of the AAU coach's girlfriend but the list was ultimately chosen by the hs head coach and each of those kids are undoubtedly top 10 players. Sadly, there are going to be a few decent basketball players in LC that do not make the HS team next year..simply because there is an abundance of decent talent. No need in putting them on this AAU team and letting them believe in something that will not happen. Its a sad reality. By placing the JV coach as their coach.the hs head coach is obviously prepping these kids to become high school basketball players and learn the hs system which is a great idea. Its not middle school basketball anymore. Favortism and the buddy system were not involved. Many obviously choose to use that as an excuse for the reason the person they have in mind was not selected. Oh..and i would also like to ask what makes the current coach of this AAU team not fit for the job? He played college bball..coached last years freshmen team to an undefeated record..and had a winning record as the JV coach this year...hes probably overqualified to coach this team but wants to prepare these kids for the next level...Kentuckynole suggest the dad coaches after arguing that there is favortism?? Btw..the 80-3 hazard team you speak of?? LC..who had practiced a total of 2 times..while learning a new system and playing together for the first time..took them to OT and lost by 3.

Sounds like to me LCC will never win because they are not getting the support they need. Suck it up and start your own AAU team. That is the good thing about AAU. If you have a clean record anyone can start a team!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never mentioned favoritism. So the high school coach picked the team after watching the kids play one game. Why are there no kids from Arlie Boggs, Beckham Bates, and Fleming Neon on the team?
You said favoritism and buddy system was not involved after saying 3 middle coaches sons and a girlfriend's brother was chosen who told them they were the best players.
So the other 20 or so 8th graders that were not chosen might as well not tryout next year because these are the top 10 players in the county based on observation of one game. So the freshman team is already chosen I am sure the kids and parents of those who were not chosen will be happy to find that out. What about the kids playing baseball or other sports?
I would guess out of the 10 players on the team only 4 of them will play all 4 years because the 7th graders coming up will push some of them out.
I did not say the current coach was not fit for the job I just said the better coach was a current Dad. Just because you played college ball and have 2 years of coaching experience does not make you overqualified.
You failed to mention the Hazard team I spoke of beat them by 14 points 2 days later with a short bench. 2 of Hazard's top 8 have broken arms.
There should of been a tryout or change the name on the uniform. It is a select team based on opinion not observation.

To the best of what I can recall the state does not allow any coach of the high school to coach aau.
