The Southwestern Lady Warriors came into Monday night’s contest against Butler County riding high after reeling off five straight victories. Three of those came against some tough competition last weekend at the John Hardin Christmas Classic in Elizabethtown. Southwestern defeated Campbellsville, Magoffin County, and Bath County to bring home the first place trophy.

“We went to John Hardin and played really well against three pretty good teams,” said Lady Warrior head coach Tim Rice. “Of course, you’re away from home and play twice in one day, so those games helped our subs out.”

The Lady Warriors have not just been winning games, but have been putting a lot of points on the scoreboard. They came into the contest averaging 74.1 points a game.

On Monday night at Pulaski County High, the Lady Warriors did just that, defeating Butler County 84-62 in the opening round of the Pulaski County Invitational.

Southwestern junior Danay Fothergill scored half of her club’s points, scoring 42 of the 84 total points.

The Lady Warriors got things rolling early, opening the contest on a 6-0 run. Two Fothergill lay-ups and a Jessica Pierce shot got Southwestern out front early.

With Southwestern leading 14-5, the Lady Bears went on a 4-0 run to cut the Lady Warrior to six. After a pair of Southwestern turnovers, Butler County cut the margin to two points.

After one quarter of play, Southwestern held a 23-17 lead over the Lady Bears. Jessica Pierce scored 9 points in the opening quarter while Fothergill added 8. Butler County’s Heather Jennings scored 8 of her team’s 17 points in the first.

In the second stanza, Southwestern went on a three-point rampage, hitting a total of seven shots from behind the arc. The Lady Warriors sank four of those in the first two and a half minutes of the quarter thanks to a trio of seventh-graders. Destiny Molden hit the first one, Addison Corder hit the next two, and Brittany Combs hit the fourth to widen the lead.

After getting into early foul trouble, Fothergill came off the bench and was simply “lights out” from the field. The junior guard tallied three treys, scoring 14 points in the second.

At the break, the Lady Warriors had a 51-37 hold over the Lady Bears.

In the third quarter, Butler attempted to make a come back, but the Lady Warrior offense was just too much for the Lady Bears. Two Fothergill treys and the strong inside scoring from Pierce was enough to keep the Warriors out front.

The pair of Danay Fothergill and Jessica Pierce teamed up for each of Southwestern’s 20 points. Fothergill led the charge with 14 points while Pierce chipped in with 6.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Southwestern led 71-58. Things got a little tense near the end, as a technical foul was given to Butler County. The Lady Warrior defense stepped up in the final quarter, surrendering only four points to Butler County.

Southwestern won by a final of 84-62 over Butler County.

Danay Fothergill led the way for the Lady Warriors with 42 points in the contest. Fothergill nailed five three-pointers and went 13 for 19 from the charity stripe.

“She (Danay) is a top-notch player, there’s not many people that can guard her one-on-one,” praised Rice.

Jessica Pierce and Addison Corder each scored in the double figures on the night.

“We’ve got a pretty tough team to guard with several different scorers,” continued Rice.

Heather Jennings was the Lady Bears’ leading scorer, finishing with 17 points. Another bright spot for the Lady Bears was free-throw shooting. Christy Clark’s club shot 85 percent from the charity stripe.

Coach Rice believes that his squad is finally hitting their stride and may have even surpassed some of his expectations.

“This is the way we’ve been trying to play all year long,” said Rice, after watching his club move to 9-1 on the season. “We’re going to press, we’re going to push the ball up the floor, and we’re going to try to score a lot of points. The way we’re shooting the ball, we’re capable of putting up 70 or 80 points a night.”

“The younger girls are farther along than I thought they would be by now, we’ve come along pretty fast,” said Rice of his young team. “To be 8-1 at this point in the season is surprising, not only to us, but everyone. Hopefully, we can keep it up.”

The Lady Warriors continued play in the Pulaski County Invitational last night against Scott.
