Pike Central gets no love from the Appalachain News Express
#1
This isn't a new storyline but you would expect to see the only team in the county that actually won their game get the front page of the sports section. But instead you see Panthers lose, and SC beats Belfry on the Front. Then Shelbly Valley falls to Corbin in 4 inch letters. Then Central knocks off Mason in size 11 times new roman with an old pic from the flemmingsburg game and a measly 4 line caption. Really Nice job Guys.

Regardless of the personality of the coach and his persistence to keep media away, the paper should be a non biased form of information. It is unfair to the kids to be treated like this. I'm sure that the Hawks will have a large write up throughout the week>>>>They're the only team still playing. I just simply dont understand why the extended community cant show support for a team that bears its name. PIKE CO. CENTRAL.

By the way, it would be great to see the Hawks nest packed full of pond creekers, lick creekers, johns creekers, mud creekers, ha and Pikevillians.
We have come and watched your games. I've been to Papa Johns and rooted for the Red. COME SHOW SOME PIKE CO. PRIDE.

I have no problem with the Appalachain News Express and their coverage, however it would be real nice when you have a player pass for 271 yds-8td's, rush for 128 yrd's-1td and he puts 74 points up on the scoreboard in a playoff game, it would be real nice for the Sports Guys to at least give the kid a name and credit him for an outstanding performance, the stats where in all the local papers before the show, also tv 5 also replayed the game twice. WYMT also had coverage of the game and picked a different kid for player of the week, don't figure. I know both the Sport Guys and WYMT do the best they can, but they talk about kids with thier names (and they deserve it) for performances alot less than this one. GO HAWKS!

Its all personal vendita IMO, they media hates Chapman and for understandable reasoning, however biased should stay out of the media even though it does not especially when speaking of sports...With credit to the News Express in the past they have done some great things for the basketball programs, soccer program and so on at Pike Central...I doubt they even had anyone at Mason this past friday night

The local media can cover only so many games. East Kentucky Broadcasting does as good of a job as any media outlet covering local high school sports. The closest games, in terms of distance, usually get the most coverage. EKB did cover the SV/Corbin game. It was covered because SV football had been covered all year. The PC/Mason game did not get covered because teams that have been covered every week, Belfry, Pikeville, SV, and the Floyd County game of the week, all had coverage. Since UK was also playing that night, no other station was available to cover the game. As far as mentioning players on the Sports Guys, if we are provided information we always highlight individuals, but if we do not know all the stats of a game, or are not provided the information, then it probably will not get mentioned. If you take the time to give us the info, then we will gladly cover it. I did have a friend of mine texting me the updates on the PC/Mason County game and I passed those updates along as soon as I got them during the Belfry/SC game. As far as I know, EKB will be broadcasting the PC/SC game this week. There are only soo many bodies and equipment to go around, but I guarantee you we will provide the best coverage for the PC/SC game and we certainly wish the Hawks and Cards good luck.

Not trying to argue, I do think you guys do a good job, but the info was in the local papers and I would think you guys covering the area sports would have read the sport section of the papers.

I agree the Sports guys, are a joke. They have had not been pleased about even acknowledging the success of Pike Central. But its ok. A little too late to jump on the bandwagon and pretend that they're interested in this game for any other reason than to remind everyone that "its Sheldon Clarks turn." I know they'll be ppl saying blah blah we cover everybody equal and are more than happy to see PC doing well now. All lip service. BS so they dont look biased and incompetent.

Bitter. What do you think.

I am not saying they are a joke, they do a good job. They are big fans of certain teams and sometimes they short other area teams because of it.

Pike Central and its supporters should be happy and and concentrate on the task at hand, not what anyone else thinks or does.

Play with heart. Win with class. Lose with dignity.

I hope PCC wins this week and plays for a title and represents Pike County well, as winning breeds winning.

I have been to every game that Pike Central has played this year and I have yet to see any signs posted by the coaching staff or the administration forbidding entry to any media. If the media was interested in reporting on any of our games...they would have been there to do so.

Note to 15th region whatever.......what's the good reason that the media has for hating our coach? Could you enlighten me on the subject?

LoL that right there is classic...But yeah I do not mind to elaborate, many times EKB and other have tried to do short interviews with Coach Chapman in which he has declined, told them quote un quote "I dont have time to do some interview" and so on. Many of these interviews were before the season began in which they were declined...He is not how would you say media friendly and I know you cant blame him but people will not take a likeing so a coach like that in example Billy G., thus Pike Central will not get the media coverage that it wants plain and simple. Not to mention names but someone that I know close to the program was asked by one particular broadcaster what his deal was, and the basic response is he doesnt like to deal with the media, so what comes out of it is the media is not going to deal with him or the program.

All in all though saying that if someone had told EKB about Aarons great game that it would have been recognized is completly ludicrious. They even mentioned it on Mason Co. broadcast so what you mean to tell me is they can find good materal before you do? I am not trying to spark an argument but you have a gentlemen who talks nascar for EKB who is affiliated with the Pike Central program, and I KNOW you all talk about Pike Central sports with him when hes around, I KNOW you all read the papers because the News Express sits every where in that building...What I mentioned above is really what it boils down to...

I guess any excuse is better than none. Looking thru the archives of Pike Central Football on the local papers website......Not much history at all. Matter of fact.....I couldn't find anything in the sports archives section, so it appears that no pub for the Hawks is "old hat". I guess the former coaches weren't "loved" either. But that's OK......we know our kids are special....and we are very happy with the coaching staff that we have. The Hawks are inviting all media to the game this Friday...... Come one, come all! Go Hawks!

Pike Central has earned the respect of thee football community, they have really turned things around this year.

Pike Central has always bben a classy and first-rate program. I have covered literally dozens of Hawks games, in most all sports, over the years and I have always been treated with respect. I have always had great relationships with Mr. Rowe, Phillip Birchfield, Mr. Lyons, and any and all coaches. I even helped Ms. Lowe coach softball one year and I had a blast. I remember telling the girls not to judge themselves by the other teams in the county(they were always so intimidated by Pikeville) and to be the best team they could be. I think that the football program has tasted some success and they realize they can be as good as any team around. Consistently performing like they have this year will elevate the Hawks program immensely. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I have and will always continue to support all the Pike County Schools. Pike Central has made their mark on the football field and I will be pulling for them on Friday night.

All I know is that I love the News-Express, especially when I'm away from home, I always loved getting it in the mail...BUT, It's gotta be one of the worst papers I've ever read. There is ALWAYS, and i mean always, a typo on the front page. Usually more than one and I'm not going to even go into how many screw-ups there are throughout the rest of the paper. I really can't think of an excuse for them to have done Central like that other than they didn't have the time. They just need to buck up and start doing a better job! GO HAWKS!

If you think the News Express is bad, try reading the Williamson Daily News, a couple weeks back they had an article on Belfry and misspelled Haywood throughout the article. The sports section of that paper is terrible after Josh Ball left.

Well, it might be that I'm just used to reading giant papers, the only smalltown paper I've read is ours.

No one hates your coach...he just makes himself unavailable to the media...that is his choice.
He was invited to pre-season Sports Guys show and declined...he was asked to be interviewed before regular season games and refused...there is only so much the media can do.

BTW...East KY Broadcasting has covered Pike Central 5 times this season.

coach chapman's entire time at breathitt was spent watching someone else take credit for his hard work (holcomb).. holcomb is not the coach everyone raves he is, the media just gave him credit because he was head coach..

Why in the world would a coach decline to be involved in media day and such? To me, this speaks that he isn't interested in having his young men covered. I know during baseball PC got a lot of coverage as they are usually a decent team and produce rather well. Good luck PC and I hope for some that the news-express covers them as they wish to be covered!

He may just not like talking to the media, does not have to be more than that.

Ive been keeping up with pike central since about 96. They get covered durig the pike county bowl, they get covered during the belfry game, then the prestonsburg game, after that the only time I have been able to listen is when I'm on the main top of a mountain picking up a local station of the team they are playing. Ive never seen Pike Central get a football headline in the paper, and when they do get recognition it's a side note telling the score. Unless they get stomped by someone, and then the story is about the other team nothing about what central does.
I'm not hating on the media. But I made a thread about this subject a few years ago and someone said something about central not paying enough for advertising or somethig like that.. So I don't know
I'm in love with Tawnya.. hehe..

Folks you need a dose of reality. Not every team, in a 6 school county, will have every game covered. Until this year, only Belfry and Pikeville, out of the Pike County schools, had every game covered. The reasons for those two are obvious. Belfry is a state championship/state contending program and has one of the largest followings anywhere. EKB has always carried Pikeville High School sports for decades. Only this year did SV get all their games carried. Last year, they were in the same boat with the other schools. Fans should be happy that there is as much coverage as there is. None of the announcers is making a killing doing these games. If i didn't get paid, I would still do them. We do this out of love for the sport and because there are a lot of people who have to work or are sick or just can't make it to the games that love to listern to high school sports. I think it is sad that folks finally have some success in football and then they complain because there is not enough attention to their school. Enjoy the ride and we will be there to cover it. I think we need a poll to determine how many of the fans complaining actually have gone to all the games this year or to Mason County last Friday night.

One thing I do want to bring up is sponsorship. I know for a fact that Belfry has sponsors who donate to EKB on behalf of Belfry football, for the pure fact of getting Belfry football on the air... Same goes with Pikeville. Now, during baseball, even to "air" the district and regional tourney there had to be sponsors... I don't mean $5.00 sponsors... I mean the MONEY kind!!! Does Pike Central have enough businesses that would sponsor them and not Pikeville? IMHO, there are enough businesses in Pikeville to do both and with PC being a county team.... Smile NOT knocking Pikeville by any means but I'm just saying that get you some support and check into what needs to be done to get the "promo" time you want for your kids!!!

I thought the title of this thread was a complaint about Appalachian News Express not East Kentucky Broadcasting.

If I could make it to games I wouldn't need the paper or the radio. It's just that when u got the same three games on 15 different channels it's a little upsetting. The nite pike central beat sc I coulndnt pick it up. But I could listen to sf and ac I think. And we all know that pikeville will be on 103.1 and belfry will be on 96.5 and prestonsburg has 95.5 covered regardless of who they are playing. The best idea anyone has had is putting 93.1 up for going back and forth. Kudos to whoever thought about that. 107.5 don't carry ball games and that's cool. But then u got all these smaller stations who carry some of the smaller teams. So when I can't listen I'd like to be able to read about it and see that the community does care about the other pike county team but once again NASCAR and the big two get all the coverage
