Coach Bill Mike Runyon has filed a Letter of Intent seeking the Republican Partyâs nomination for office of State Representative from Kentuckyâs 97th District. Having achieved over 500 wins, 8 Regional Titles, a State Championship, and having coached two Kentucky Mr. Basketballs (John Pelphrey and JR Vanhoose), now Coach Runyon is setting his sights on a new type of arena â the political arena.
Coach Runyonâs campaign will be about the future, and how to tackle the problems that our people face. In the 97th District, covering Johnson, Martin, and parts of Floyd and Pike County there are many issues to be addressed. The full out assault on coal mining, the strangle hold the government has on our individual liberties, the problems with our state budget, and the need to move forward in education are just a few of the issues Coach Runyon plans to address in his campaign.
Coach Bill Mike Runyon is a retired teacher. He coached basketball, baseball, and football as well as was Athletic Director for Paintsville High School. Coach Runyon currently serves the City Council of Paintsville, and won that office with more votes than any other candidate. Coach Runyon is a family man, married to Jayme Runyon a teacher and academic coach at Paintsville Independent Schools. Coach Runyon also has three children: Matt Runyon (an attorney), Allison Runyon (a PhD student at EKU) and Laura Runyon (a college student attending EKU).

âMy candidacy is not about me, it is about the future of eastern Kentucky, and Kentucky as a whole. I hope to help bring people together from all political parties and walks of life in order to promote common sense solutions based on a bedrock of strong principles.â

âI am planning a full-court press to get to Frankfort and work for my district and my state. With dedication to problem-solving, hard-work, and some new and fresh ideas, I just donât see what could keep us from meeting our commitments and reaching our goals.â
âThe out-pouring of support so far, in just the few days I have spoken with area leaders, friends and family about running for this office, has been amazing. I am energized and motivated to campaign hard in order to get to work for the folks of eastern Kentucky and our great state.â

I think if more coaches got into politics and ran school districts then things might work a little better as I would imagine most would run it as a team and incorporate those characteristics and values that makes a team successful. Why wouldn't a JC fan vote for him? All he has ever done is win and right now it would be nice to have winners on our side.

Though he is the wrong politics to get my vote, why would it matter to voters from the JC school district? This isn't sports, it's government. It's about what he stands for that should count, not that he coached against other schools.

He is of your politics. God help us all!!!!! "The Governator" didn't happen to mention that BMR changed political party's last week either, did he? Wonder why?
Why would either party claim him?
This big grand earth shattering announcement hasn't seemed to garner all of the uncontrolable hoopla he was planing on, I'm sure?

Wonder why?I just figured he was a lifelong Republican when it said he was seeking that parties nomination. Johnson is overwhelmingly of that party.
Why would either party claim him?

This will be interesting.

Maybe BMR wants a piece of the action since former Johnson Central Coach Johnny Ray Turner is a state senator.

Wow I didn't know he switched party's. I'm curious as well why this wasn't mentioned.

Because Johnson and Martin are heavily Republican and they make up the primary voting block in that district.

You're kidding me right? He switched joined the republican party just a few days ago. Why would any republican or democrat vote for him? Obviously he doesn't share the lifelong republican views. What does this mean for the coal industry in EKY because the democrats are not for the coal mines.

I agree and disagree. I do believe that the hierarchy of the Democratic party in Washington is against coal but I do believe that most Democrats in this state as well as other coal producing states are pro-coal. Most all elected officials in Kentucky are supporting coal. One of the staunchest anti-coal individuals happens to be a Republican, Lamar Alexander, a Senator from Tennessee. That is the reason "Friends of Coal" has been boycotting the state of Tennessee.

Good Luck to one of the best coaches the 15th region has ever seen. I think he would do a fine job.
A committee should consist of three men, two of whom are absent.

Wonder if he'll try to crank the thermostat in the Capital building up to 90 to sweat out his opposition.
