Week 5 NFL Power Rankings
#1
1 Giants 4-0-0 - 1/7 WHAT A SURPRISE: The only offseason question around the Giants was at wideout minus the now-incarcerated Plaxico Burress. Maybe Giants GM Jerry Reese should be arrested, because he has apparently kidnapped Panthers WR and 4-time Pro Bowler Steve Smith, right? Nope, it's New York's third-year WR winning the receiving triple crown through the season's first quarter, leading the NFL in catches (34), yards (411) and TDs (4).

WHAT A LETDOWN: The only concern for Tom Coughlin thus far happened in Week 4, when Eli Manning hurt his foot without anyone touching him.
THIS WEEK: vs. Raiders (1-3)

2 Saints 4-0-0 - 2/16 WHAT A SURPRISE: It seemed reasonable that the Saints defense would improve a tad with new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and veteran safety Darren Sharper. But going from a bottom-10 defense to a top-10 unit is giving New Orleans very real Super Bowl hopes.

WHAT A LETDOWN: After rejuvenated Broncos castoff Mike Bell ran wild in the season's first two weeks, getting hurt is a bummer — but luckily Pierre Thomas came back just in time. Still, cross your fingers that either can stay healthy for 16 games.
THIS WEEK: Bye

3 Colts 4-0-0 - 3/10 WHAT A SURPRISE: The consensus was that WR Anthony Gonzalez would be the guy to make up for the void of future Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison in this lineup. When Lil' Gonzo suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1, Indy fans got nervous.
WHAT A SURPRISE: The consensus was that WR Anthony Gonzalez would be the guy to make up for the void of future Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison in this lineup. When Lil' Gonzo suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1, Indy fans got nervous. But why worry? GM Bill Polian worked his magic again with young WRs Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie filling in admirably.
WHAT A LETDOWN: The defense has played well, beyond a few blips in the first four games when they had issues with a power running game and getting off the field (see: Dolphins, Week 2).
THIS WEEK: at Titans (0-4)
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | Schedule | Apps

4 Eagles 2-1-0 - 3/7 WHAT A SURPRISE: Frankly, the shock has been how minimal the effect of Michael Vick has been felt thus far, both on-field (offense put up just 31 yards in his 11 play, Week 3 debut) and off (seriously, has there been any real protest yet?).
WHAT A SURPRISE: Frankly, the shock has been how minimal the effect of Michael Vick has been felt thus far, both on-field (offense put up just 31 yards in his 11 play, Week 3 debut) and off (seriously, has there been any real protest yet?). Instead the star sub for injured QB Donovan McNabb has been Kevin Kolb, with back-to-back 300-yard games in QB1's absence.
WHAT A LETDOWN: Forget about the dinged offensive line and gaping hole at MLB — will Brian Westbrook ever be his electric self again?
THIS WEEK: vs. Bucs (0-4)
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | Schedule | Apps

5 Jets 3-1-0 - 5/21 WHAT A SURPRISE: Everyone thought he had "it" all summer, but until he went out and beat the Patriots in Week 2 nobody was 100% certain that the Jets could be a playoff team with rookie QB Mark Sanchez calling signals.
WHAT A SURPRISE: Everyone thought he had "it" all summer, but until he went out and beat the Patriots in Week 2 nobody was 100% certain that the Jets could be a playoff team with rookie QB Mark Sanchez calling signals. Despite a rough Week 4, the kid's gonna be alright.
WHAT A LETDOWN: That said, it's no fun to see a seemingly good egg react poorly to a game-changing, goal-line INT against the Saints by chop-blocking at Saints LB Jonathan Vilma's knees. Hopefully, he got that out of his system.
THIS WEEK: at Dolphins, Mon. (1-3)
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | Schedule | Apps

6 Patriots 3-1-0 - 2/6 WHAT A SURPRISE: No Tedy Bruschi. No Rodney Harrison. No Mike Vrabel. No Richard Seymour. No problem so far, as the Patriots defense ranks in the NFL's top 10 yet again with their younger replacements.
WHAT A SURPRISE: No Tedy Bruschi. No Rodney Harrison. No Mike Vrabel. No Richard Seymour. No problem so far, as the Patriots defense ranks in the NFL's top 10 yet again with their younger replacements.
WHAT A LETDOWN: It was hard to compute watching Tom Brady struggle for much of his first two games back after missing almost all of 2008 to injury. Admit it, it sure was fun watching the '07 Patriots play with perfection back in the day, wasn't it?
THIS WEEK: at Broncos (4-0)
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | Schedule | Apps

7 Ravens 3-1-0 - 7/12 WHAT A SURPRISE: The Ravens finally have a legitimate offense after years of starving for one to appear. Second-year QB Joe Flacco has looked stellar, even in defeat at New England last week, in leading the NFL's third-ranked offense.

WHAT A LETDOWN: Suddenly, should we start questioning the age of this defense? Or maybe the brain drain with longtime coordinator Rex Ryan leaving town for Broadway is what's ailing a unit that has allowed 24+ points in three of its four games this season.
THIS WEEK: vs. Bengals (3-1)
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | Schedule | Apps

8 Vikings 4-0-0 1 5/11 WHAT A SURPRISE: The big question around Brett Favre this summer was whether or not he could dial back on the killer mistakes. Well, four games in and no forced, back-breaking interceptions so far — which is remarkable for a guy who turns 40 this weekend.
WHAT A SURPRISE: The big question around Brett Favre this summer was whether or not he could dial back on the killer mistakes. Well, four games in and no forced, back-breaking interceptions so far — which is remarkable for a guy who turns 40 this weekend.
WHAT A LETDOWN: The defense has been lucky the last two weeks against the 49ers and Packers that ol' No. 4 did un-retire, or the Vikings might be staring at 2-2 instead of 4-0.
THIS WEEK: at Rams (0-4)
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | Schedule | Apps

9 Steelers 2-2-0 1 1/9 WHAT A SURPRISE: Heading into Week 4 vs. the Chargers and with Willie Parker injured, what were the Steelers going to get from Rashard Mendenhall — especially after coach Mike Tomlin ripped him the previous week? But behind a slumping O-line, Mendenhall was the slumpbuster by rushing for 165 yards and 2 TDs, lending hope he can be the missing link in an M.I.A.

But behind a slumping O-line, Mendenhall was the slumpbuster by rushing for 165 yards and 2 TDs, lending hope he can be the missing link in an M.I.A. running game.
WHAT A LETDOWN: After winning all the tight ones in their Super Bowl season, the Steelers have blown two fourth-quarter leads that could have had them 4-0.
THIS WEEK: at Lions (1-3)
Team: Home | Stats | Fantasy | Schedule | Apps

10 Falcons 2-1-0 - 3/10 WHAT A SURPRISE: Much of what the Falcons expected heading into this season has come to fruition, but so far the defense has been more opportunistic than expected — notching six takeaways in Atlanta's two wins.

WHAT A LETDOWN: Actually, believe it or not, the offense hasn't been "all that" — Matt Ryan's nice stats and pub notwithstanding. Teams appear to be stuffing the box to try to take away Michael Turner, whose 3.5 yards/carry has dropped considerably. And the offense hasn't yet adjusted, being held under 300 total yards twice in three games.
THIS WEEK: at 49ers (3-1)

Vikings appear to be very underrated in these rankings. So far that team has been 2 headed monster an offense. If the teams tried cutting off Favre, Peterson ran all over them. If they cut off Peterson, Favre burned them. And their defense is playing like the defense most people thought they would have. Honestly its hard not to include them in the Top 5 in the NFL at this point.

The Jets seem to be a little overrated at this point. I know Mark Sanchez is good but we must remember that he is a rookie QB and its going to take some time for him to adjust to the speed of the game. Other than that I don't have that much of a problem with the rankings.
