Prep Football: Boyle scores on first seven possessions, tops Mercer 56-0

HARRODSBURG — Coach Larry French wanted to make sure his Boyle County team got off to a quick start Friday and did not let host Mercer County think it had any chance of winning.

Taking just 51 seconds to score two touchdowns, and scoring on their first seven possessions did the trick for the Rebels.

It was that easy for Class AAAA’s top-ranked-team, which rolled up nearly 500 yards of offense in a 56-0 win over Mercer.

“We felt like we had to get on them early and not give them any confidence, and we were able to do that. Our offensive line did a great job blocking,” French said.

Rees MacShara ran for 215 yards and Boyle’s first four touchdowns on just five carries Friday, and Boyle (4-0) needed just 30 plays to gain 481 yards, 366 of those coming in the first half.

“He’s the real deal, and they’re a great team at running the football. And that’s what they’re going to come out and do every week,” Mercer coach Bill Mason said. “If you can stop it, you can probably stop them. If you can’t, then they’re going to win the football game.”

While MacShara did the bulk of the damage Friday, he was not alone.

Boone Goldsmith threw for one touchdown and ran for two more, Lamar Dawson ran for 89 yards on four carries and had a 33-yard reception, and sophomore Devan Cox had an impressive 37-yard touchdown run late in the game.

“Lamar did a god job of opening it up in there, and Boone threw the ball well at times. We had a couple of receivers drop passes. But we protected well, and I just can’t say enough about our offensive line. They blocked tremendously for us,” French said.

“This garbage about Rees being a one-man team is not so. Those guys can play, and I think they showed that tonight.”

MacShara needed just two plays to go 53 yards, scoring on a sweep left from 35 yards out as Boyle led 7-0 with 9 minutes, 35 seconds left in the first quarter.

Mercer (0-5) mounted a nine-play drive and got to Boyle’s 37-yard line, but Tre Dunn was stopped for a two-yard loss on third down to stall the drive.

Boyle got the ball at its own 15, and on the second play, MacShara ran a sweep left, hit the sideline and outran the Mercer defense for an 85-yard score and a 14-0 lead.

After a three-and-out by the Titans, MacShara capped a four play, 53-yard drive with a five-yard scoring run over the left side as Boyle led 21-0 after the first quarter. Boyle outgained Mercer 193 yards to 29 in the quarter and ran just eight plays.

Boyle, which had 391 yards rushing on 22 carries, continued to chew up large chunks of yardage in the second quarter.

Dawson ran for 34 yards to set up Boyle at the Mercer 10-yard line. On the next play, MacShara took a pitch right and went in for his fourth score

MscShara’s final run was a 70-yard scamper where he started left, cut back right and sprinted to the Titans’ 15-yard line. Four pays later, Goldsmith hit Zach Hester for a one-yard scoring pass.

After Mercer fumbled the ball away, Goldsmith hit Logan Tritapoe for 13 yards and Dawson for a 33-yard gain before capping the four play, 50-yard drive with a four-yard blast with 15 seconds left in the half as Boyle went into halftime up 42-0.

Goldsmith added another four-yard scoring run to open the third quarter that gave Boyle a 49-0 lead and got the running clock going. He finished 5-for-7 passing for 90 yards.

Cox closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter when he went in from 37 yards out, the last 15 yards carrying Mercer defenders with him.

“This is the first time Devan’s run the football year. He doesn’t even get time back there. He’s just a natural back there,” French said.

Mason thought Mercer played hard after being down so big at the half.

“We came out and had a little bit of fight and grit in us the second half. Otherwise they would have hung 80 (points) on us,” he said.

The Boyle defense was dominating in getting its first shutout of the season as it held Mercer to 130 yards on 50 plays, including 12 plays of zero yards or less. Russell Mays led Mercer with 41 yards on 12 carries.

French thought his defense could have played much better.

“I think they got outside of us several times. We didn’t exactly do what we were supposed to do out there,” French said. “We had a makeshift lineup in there with (Brandon) Taylor going out on the first offensive play for them.

“We’ve got some things we need to work on. Our secondary needs to improve. We’re not as strong defensively as we have been in the past, but we’re getting a good effort from a lot of kids out there.”
