I begin to think that today the teams that have seen more state or regional championships then other teams seem to be getting the good stuff like turf while others are left in their natural grass. But what I am wondering is turf good for a team at home but when they go on the road could it come back and hurt them?
I think yes becuase once it rains and you are use to playin on a good condition and then you go on the road and lets say it has rained non stop. Then I think that limits to what a team can do becuase they do not have that traction they need to run or pass. so what iam askin is turf good or bad?

i dont nescessarily think its bad, if you dont prepare you will get beat regardless of what the playing surface is, i know belfry hasnt played a team of russels caliber on a natural surface, but they have played just as many games on dirt as they have on turf, pike centrals field was in horrible shape, it rained like a mother at maggofin, haywood will have the boys ready to step in the slop, wouldnt suprise me if they spent the week at thier ole stompin grounds up the holler behind the old school. win or lose, im sure noone on belfrys team will use the playing surface as an excuse

And no we did'nt receive the turf from the State of Kentucky just because we won the Region or State Titles either....That turf has cost over $600,000.00 to install and is being paid for by The Belfry community and their corporate sponsors. Why do you think it's called Central Appalachian Mining Stadium ? That particular sponsor has chipped in over $ 200,000.00 of the cost.

...and exactly how many more games in muddy conditions has Russell played on grass as opposed to Belfry?
Belfry is just one year removed from playing on one of the most nottorious nasty fields in the state... these boys won't be hampered by a little snow/rain/mud. In fact,,, from what I gather the team who will struggle the most by bad field conditions will be the Devils. The Devils rely alot more on their passing game than Belfry and also their running game is heavy in relying on misdirection. In order to sell the misdirection the backs have to be able to cutback accurately.
On top of everything else, turf is better because come State Finals weekend Belfry will be accustomed to the carpet (FieldTurf in particular) wheras most teams still have to adjust.

Well, I think the Undertaker has a point, there is only 2 teams in East Kentucky that has turf...Belfry & Pikeville, and Pikeville isnt playing this week, so it looks as if the thread is pointed at one team....
Regardless, I think because Belfry plays games on grass as well as practicing on grass, there will be no adjustments needed, there will be no disadvantage for Belfry. Orisonspi is correct, Russell IMO, would be more vulnerable to a wet rainy/snowy field than Belfry would based on their style of play.

I voted Good, because of all the factors: less injuries, field conditions are better. But I always loved playing on the grass and in the mud. I'm kinda torn between the two. I only got to play on turf two times and it was in 85 and 86 when Belfry went to state. Big difference from the turf offered now.

I'm pretty sure that TCN started this thread because Ashland has raised much talk over the past 2-3 seasons of installing our own turf. Most people have been in favor of the idea thus far.
We're still trying to hammer out all of the details on exact costs and where the money would come from. Luckily we have a great community that loves our kids. A lot of money has been put into the other sports over the last few years and now it is time for the football team to get another upgrade.
The boys baseball team had a new field put in beside the highschool with lights.
A brand new soccer and track complex was also completed in recent years near the high school.
From what I hear, I haven't seen it yet, but apparently the bleachers in gym for basketball games are brand new.
The football team received a brand new revamped weightroom this season, that money come from a private sponsor though.
Now they are considering the turf on the field.

I think it's good, as long as the community puts forth the money to get a good turf. Not having a good turf could cause players to get injured.

I would say good and bad... The good thing about turf is u dont have to throw seeds down to get grass to come back like u do natural grass but the bad thing about turf is that is u have to clean turf like around the edges like ive seen people get a piece of glass out...

Turf is much better than grass IMO. I know Belfry has played on wet grass @ Pike Central, Magoffin Co. and P'burg and they did just fine in those games. The turf is easier to maintain than grass & in the long run it is worth every penny of the $600,000
