Pike County girls basketball, who will win it all?
#1
Who do you think will win it all?.:redboxer:

Hard to say, but I would think Pikeville would be the favorite with Rachel Potter and Rachel Smith both returning. Our 7th grade was pretty strong last year as well. Seems like Elkhorn had a pretty good 7th grade also. I'm not sure about the other side (Northern Conference) of the county.

I agree, both Pikeville and Dorton should be the contenders for the championship. However,I think Dorton all the way, they have played together longer and a deeper team.

What will Belfry have returning this season? I know their varsity was down (for the 1st time since the new school opened) last year, but I'm not sure what their 7th grade had.
#5
Am not real sure. I do not think they will be as good as last year since Jackie moved to high school-she was the ballhandler, rebounder, lead defender, and the bulk of offense.
#6
How about other teams? I know Elkhorn lost a lot of the team as 8th graders. What do they have left? John's Creek? Are any of the teams as deep as Dorton?
#7
Dorton all the way!
I believe Potter and Smith are no match for Wright and Newsome!
It's usually hard to predict a winner but this year I think Dorton has it in the bag!
#8
Elkhorn lost a lot last year, and I believe it will take a few seasons to regain a dominant team!

Johns Creek lost their center and guard but I believe they had a good bench to fill their spots!

Bartender, I want a shot of whatever he/she is drinking. You must be joking. Potter and Smith are way better players than those two!

Have you ever seen them play??

Yes I've seen all 4 of them play and that's my point.
#12
Thats my point too. You must need glasses because you aren't watching the same games as me. Potter and Smith didn't have an answer for Dorton this year.

I actually have contacts and if anyone outplayed Potter and Smith it was Leeza Mullins. :dontthink

I agree that Leeza was the engine that ran Dorton, but since she is going to be in high school next season Wright and Newsome will step up and take her place.
And again next season Dorton will come out victorious.

We'll see once the season gets here. You may be very disappointed. :Sad04:

Don't talk the talk unless you can walk the walk!!! :dontthink

I think it will be a competitive season. No one can tell us with surety who will the county championship. Many things can happen between now and next season. Players can get better, get hurt, etc.

I like talking about each team's chances next season, but I don't think we should bring individual players into this unless we are praising them.

Who will be coaching Elkhorn this year? I know Coach Conley and Coach Mccarty resigned last year after they won the County Championship. I heard the assistant coach Van Swindall would be the new head coach.

I don't think they have made anything official yet. I look for Coach Swindall to be coaching them though.

pikeville should be the best.I know Dorton always has a good team.I saw the the two Rachels this summer and they looked good. Not sure if Dorton can match up with them.Does Dorton have any size? They will need good guards also.Good luck to all the teams!!

We have really good guards, but they are a little small. We have a little size inside as well, but we are not a big team by any means. We will have 3 starters back, along with our 6th man.

As of right now, I'd have to say Pikeville is the early favorite because their best two players are back again and they were two of the best in the county last year.

Johns Creek lost 8 8th graders. There may not be enough girls interested to even field a team this year.

It takes more than two players to win games.

pikeville will be one of the better teams in the mts. Those two girls will be enough

Like private I saw the 2 girls play this summer. No doubt they are great...the Potter girl has gotten so tall. She sees the floor even better now, and tends to be a little faster.Smith seems about the same. They do not look like middle school players. They have actually been playing varsity and a lot of it as best I can tell. It does however take 5 players on a team, not two. As a coach though, I would rather have them two on my team and making my chances higher than playing against them.
How old is the Potter girl? Is she a hold back or a true 8th grader this fall?

Good luck to all of the teams. I can not wait to see all of this play out. I will be watching as often as possible.

Yes, Johns Creek will be fielding a team, Claire (Fuller) West will be the head coach and Bethany (Bliffen) Lockard will be her asst. coach.....Both of these coaches played high school basketball and Claire played at Pikeville College. They will do a fine job with this year rebuilding....they will have a lot of young players...

How many players are returning from last years team? Also, there was a rumor a month or so ago that the Mullins School athletes and Johns Creek would be one team. Is that true at all?
Glad to hear things are progressing with JC team. Will their gym be ready to play in after the flooding?

I know several people that work at Johns Creek and nothing was ever mentioned about joining together with Mullins....As for returning players, there are several that will be 8th grade returning and quite a few 7th and 6th graders playing...As for gym, the floor didn't get flooded, it was just the hallway and one locker room, so it will be okay....just teh basement will be in construction when school begins...Rumors are Rumors.....my info comes from people right at JC.....

Thanks for the info. Good luck this year. JC should be pretty good with several 8th graders returning. Any predictions as to who you think will win girl's middle school basketball tournament in Pike County this year?
