Article On Flooding Near Belfry Middle School & More
#1
In Pike County, several communities are in ruins after flood waters swept through overnight. Many there say it's the worst they have ever seen.

Several homes and even Belfry Middle School did not escape the devastation.

This is now the bottom level of Belfry Middle School, which used to hold six classrooms and the school's entire utility system. This is also where school officials stored the CATS Tests which students were in the process of taking and were about 3/4 of the way finished.

Principal James Hurley needed a boat to get to his school early saturday morning. He took that a sign of things to come.

"Anytime you have to pull into your school on a john boat, you're in trouble," said Hurley.

He was exactly right. Hurley found eight feet of water in the bottom floor of the school and the gym next door was also damaged. In minutes, flood water wiped out a school year of work.

"We're concerned because last year we finished seventh in the state, and we had the goal of being in the top five and our kids were working really hard and our teachers worked really hard this year," added Hurley.

Now the future seems uncertain.

"I don't know if our kids will have to retest. I don't know if they'll move us to a different location," said Hurley.

"We already went through it, so maybe you can correct your mistakes. But what can you do? Didn't expect it you know?" said student Dani Casey.

People who live across from the school say it only took minutes for the water to consume their homes, something they are not used to.

"It's been around it but never been in it and it's about 3 or 4 feet, so I'd say we've lost about everything we've got in there," said Bill Ireson.

Leaving many asking, what's next?

District officials are now trying to determine when students may go back to school and it's up to state education officials on what will be done with about the CATS Tests that were lost in the flood.

School officials believe all of the testing booklets were destroyed. Sixth graders finished their exams last week, while seventh and eighth graders had more tests to take this week.

This is not good.

My heart breaks for these children and the school itself. CATS testing is a very stressful time for the children and the school. I pray that they come to a reasonable decision concerning this.

Maybe you need to learn to be sympathetic.... I will try to post pictures from the basement where EVERYTHING, including teachers' personal belongings were destroyed! How people can joke about this, I'll never know.

he was joking about the person saying the kids might "half" to retake the tests.

Not a good time for jokes for those who were severely affected by this! As a Pikeville graduate, comments like that are embarrassing!
#14
The joke wasn't made at you or about the people involved, it was made about a poster on this site's use of grammar.
#15
It was made insinuating kids should have to retake a test because an adult can't spell... those of you who want to joke, strap on the boots and come wade the mud to clean it up, you'll find there is NOTHING to joke about, not even grammar and spelling!
#16
No joking no my part, as I've done my cleaning on other disasters.

Please keep this civil. Unless you have something constructive or ADULT to say, please keep it to yourself! This is a time of destruction and devastation for many who have endured it. Kindness would be such a nice thing to come across with!!!!
