Dawgs break own meet relay record
#1
RUSSELL — Cool temperatures, blustery winds and an evening shower challenged athletes in the 29th annual Red Devil Relays.

In other words, not exactly favorable conditions for setting records.

Lawrence County’s 400-meter relay team didn’t give in to the elements, however.

Hunter James, Mark Fitzpatrick, Brennon Marcum and Matt Marcum heated up the Henry R. Evans Stadium track to win handily in 46.83 seconds, breaking the Bulldogs’ old meet record of 47.0 set in 2006.

“We did it mostly on adrenaline,’’ said Fitzpatrick, the only senior in the group. “It’s the first time we ran it in this order. We’re starting to get a real good chemistry.’’

First-year Lawrence County coach Dan Bailey appreciates the group’s work ethic. Turner O’Brian and Travis Mollette are also getting work on the relay.

“The kids are always coming to me and asking if we can do this, or do that,’’ Bailey said. “We’ve been changing around the positions.’’

James also won the long jump (19 feet, 3 inches) and triple jump (39-9).

The Bulldogs are no strangers to success in the sprint relays. Lawrence County placed third at state in the 800 relay two of the last three years, with Fitzpatrick playing a key role.
