I think Noble is a great player, but I tuned in at the last of the game and she missed some free throws that could have kept them in the game. She still has a little growing up to do. She is going to improve so much over the next 3 years. With a player like her, I can see Breathitt taking region her sophomore, junior, and senior years! She is so fun to watch. It is amazing that she is so young.

Pioneers win Sweet 16 opener

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Simon Kenton girls' basketball coach Jeff Stowers explains his practice sessions - which he admits can focus on defense up to 70 percent of the time - the following way: defense is consistent when offense isn't. Defense saves.

"Tonight," he said Wednesday, "was the perfect example."

After struggling offensively throughout the first half, Simon Kenton beat Breathitt County 46-37 at Diddle Arena for the program's first-ever state tournament victory.

Through the first two quarters, Simon Kenton made just 5 of 30 field-goal attempts (17 percent), but still led 16-15 at halftime Leading scorer Chelsea Tolliver was 1-of-10 from the floor for two points.

"At halftime we decided that if we kept the defense going, we knew we were going to get on track (offensively)," Stowers said. "At some point in time, Chelsea was going to drop a bomb on somebody."

That moment finally came with 6:53 to play in the third quarter. Tolliver hit a 3-pointer to give Simon Kenton a 19-18 lead. She went on to score the Pioneers' first 13 points of the second half. Along the way, she made a 3-pointer to surpass Jeff Krohman to move into first place on Simon Kenton's all-time career scoring list. After finishing with 19 points for the game, she has 2,190 points.

"(The first half) was pretty frustrating. I couldn't hit shots; nobody could hit shots," Tolliver said. "... In the second half we just kept shooting and they started falling for us. You can't let the last shot affect your next shot."

Tolliver wasn't the only Simon Kenton player who took an unconscious approach to her offensive game.

With 2:54 to play and Breathitt County leading 37-36, guard Sydni Wainscott, who was 1-of-8 from the field, hit a 3-pointer to give the Pioneers the lead for good. She followed the shot by making another 3-pointer 52 seconds later to stretch the lead to 42-37. The shots keyed Simon Kenton's 11-0 game-ending run.

"Chelsea's our shooter, obviously," Wainscott said. "I was just trying to get her the ball, not thinking they were overplaying her. Eventually I just had to step up and take some shots."

Simon Kenton finished just 15-of-53 from the field (28 percent), but Breathitt County coach Peggy Moore said the back-to-back 3-pointers were the beginning of the end for her team.
