The 3,000-point club in Kentucky high school hoops

Elliott County’s Jonathan Ferguson has joined the 3,000-point club in Kentucky boys’ high school basketball. The Lions’ senior sharpshooter has eclipsed 3,200 points to become the 16th Region’s all-time top scorer. If Elliott County makes a long run in the post-season, Ferguson could crack the top 5 all-time.

It’s an amazing feat to reach 3,000. If a player starts as a freshman and plays about 30 games a year, he would have to average 25 points a game in his career to hit that magic number. That makes Kelly Coleman’s 4,337 points downright mind-boggling.

Here’s the list of the state’s all-time leading scorers from the KHSAA record book and other sources:

1.4,337 — Kelly Coleman, Wayland (1956)
2.3,647 — Charlie Osborne, Flat Gap (1957)
3.3,567 — Harry Todd, Earlington (1958)
4.3,542 — Chris Harrison, Tollesboro (1991)
5.3,365 – Charles Thomas, Harlan (1995)
6.3,325 — Clem Haskins, Taylor County (1963)
7.3,300 — Ty Rogers, Lyon County (2004)
8.3,233 — Fred Hale, Williamstown (1973)
9.3,228 — Ervin Stepp, Phelps (1980)
10.3,226 — Manuel Forrest, Moore (1981)
11.3,220 — Jonathan Ferguson, Elliott County (2009)
12.3,219 — Nelson White, Powell County (1955)
13.3,211 — Tim Stephens, McCreary Central (1976)
14.3,202 – Todd Conley, Elkhorn City (1994)
15.3,200 — Ronnie Lyons, Mason County (1970)
16.3,183 — Talbert Turner, Pendleton County (1984)
17.3,172 — Bert Greene, Olive Hill (1959)
18.3,160 — Shannon Hoskins, M.C. Napier/Clay County (1992)
19.3,148 — Darel Carrier, Bristow (1959)
20.3,140 — J.J. Hylton, Belfry (1992)
21.3,136 — Corky Withrow, Central City (1956)
22.3,095 — J.R. VanHoose, Paintsville (1998)
23.3,077 — Rich Hendrick, Bristow (1957)
24.3,070 — Clark Stepp, June Buchanan (2008)
25.3,058 — Larry Gritton, Oneida Baptist (1993)
26.3,048 — Leonard Carpenter, Salyersville (1953)
27.3,047 — Paul Sturgill, Livingston (1959)
28.3,033 — Ray Harper, Bremen (1980)
29.3,023 — Tim Couch, Leslie County (1996)

Mike Fields - Herald-Leader Staff Writer They were nowhere to be found in the Herald-Leader's pre-season top 25 boys' basketball teams, but Eastern's Eagles are flying high in the rankings as the regular season ends this weekend.

Eastern has the state's best record (25-1 going into tonight's game against Male), and has risen to No. 3 in Dave Cantrall's ratings.

But Eagles Coach Jason Couch isn't crowing "I told you so." He understands why his team was overlooked in the pre-season. "We graduated four starters off last year's (7th Region runner-up) team, and a lot of people found it hard to imagine we could duplicate that success with a bunch of young kids," Couch said. "And in a way that was good because it's easier to motivate a team when it's not ranked high."
Eastern's inexperienced players gained confidence in summer play, but they've exceeded even Couch's expectations. The team won its first 14 games before falling to Jeffersontown, then bounced back to win the Louisville Invitational Tournament the next week to start another long string of W's.

Senior Chris Dowe, the sixth man last year, leads them with a 15-point average. "He's probably the guy who's surprised everybody the most," Couch said.

Junior Delquan Thomas (13 ppg), and sophomores Remy Abell (11 ppg) and Lyonell Gaines (11 ppg) have been consistent, too.

Eastern won the 1997 state title under Bryce Hibbard with a team that made up for a lack of size with heart, hustle, athleticism and chemistry. Couch was an assistant at Greenwood that season, but he watched Eastern in the state tournament.

Do this year's Eagles remind him of that '97 team? "They were more athletic, and had pure speed," Couch said. "But we're probably a little better skilled. That team had great chemistry, and I think we have pretty good chemistry, too."

Congrats to Jonathan and Good Luck to the Elliot County Lions during their playoff run. I sure hope the folks at Courier-Journal don't see this list. They might be a little disappointed to see the number of eastern Kentucky players/schools on the list.

First want to congratulate Jonathon on a great accomplishment. I also want to say, what a classy, out of thier way move by the folks at Russell to present him with a plaque before the EC/Russell game on becoming the 16th Region's leading scorer. Very nice gesture!

Speaking as someone who grew up in Wayland Ky, and is very familar with Kelly Coleman, & the 3,000 point club, let me first say congradulations!!!!!!!!!!

This young man has reached a milestone that few in the 'storied' history of Kentucky high school basketball have managed to reach. I wish him the best for the rest of the season and for many seasons too come.
