Pirates fought hard in this game tonight. Belfry had two fumbles that led to Ironton scores....if you gave those back to Belfry we would have won the game.
This game ends the 13 game series between Belfry & Ironton. The Belfry community thanks Ironton for all the hospitality that was always shown when we visited your city.
This game is a heart breaker tonight for the Pirates, but as always it will serve as a learning tool for us and really shows the coaching staff what we need to tune up before the playoffs.
Good luck the rest of the season to Ironton...
Go Pirates !!! :Skull03:

Great effort by the Pirates.. Hope they fix the mental mistakes before playoffs. If they do theyll be fine.

Tough loss for the Pirates and hopefully their last of the season. Ironton is a tough team and seems to always pull them out against the Pirates. Ironton always has such a great team for a small town. Is Ironton about the size of Pikeville or Paintsville or bigger than both? I know off topic its just amazing to me that they keep their program as high as it always is, which is very high. Great tradition and tradition breeds success is how I assume they do it. No shame in losing to Ironton. Belfry will rebound off this loss, which means nothing but pride, and get ready to win another region and state championship.

Congrats to the Tigers keep your heads up Pirates.
Ohio is setup just a bit different than Ky makes it a little easier to keep the program tough year in and year out.

By enrollment numbers, Ironton would be a 2A school in Kentucky. It would astonishing to see how many state titles they would have won by now. Congrats to Ironton on win. Good luck to both teams throughout the rest of the season.

Thats true TC but what I was talking about was the enrollment policies.
10-22-2005, 12:16 AM
Yeah I know the enrollment policies are complete different. I was just stating that if everything were the same as it is right now and they were in KY they would be 2A.

pretty good game by the pirates last night. we hung tough with a very good ball club.......we just didnt have an answer for darius lewis, he is a brute! 2 turnovers and a crucial facemask that gave ironton a big first down cost us the game. great effort tonight and i feel pretty good about our chances in the playoffs, i dont know that we will play a tougher team than we did last night.

I don't think we will IMO until the State Semi's at Russell if Russell is still in it by the time we get to that round. I wonder something, If Russell loses in the playoffs, where would Belfry go for the Semi's ????
Back to Pond Creek ?
10-22-2005, 02:53 PM
If Russell were to lose you would still go to whoever wins their region even if they're a lower seeded team. It is that region's year to host the state semi game no matter what their record or seeding. The most likely other contender's from their region are Fleming or Morgan Counties.

heres a few pics elasticgirl took last night....one of these days i will get a good camera lol.......sorry for the quality just thought you all might like them

heres a couple that show the field for those of ya that havent seen it

Wow the field looks amazing. Ashland has been talking for a while about getting an artificial field but I don't know if it will ever happen or not. I haven't seen the home stands, but the visitor stands look a little on the small side. Other than that, everything looks amazing.

visitor side is a little small, but we havent had a team come in yet thats filled them up other than the pike county bowl.......home side has an upper and lower level and is pretty spacious. but nobody has seen anything yet, wait till basketball season they have one of the most amazing gyms you will ever see.
10-22-2005, 06:52 PM
The field isn't done yet. They have to come back in the spring and fill in the "Belfry Pirates" in the endzones and I heard thet there will be a Pirate in the middle of the field
10-22-2005, 06:53 PM
Well if the Belfry/Ashland series picks up next year you might just have a team come in that will fill up that visitor side quite nicely.

I will post a few pics of the Basketball Gym I have......in the Basketball forum.

The Good:
- Belfry looked really sharp at times on both sides of the ball. The line would open up nice holes and our backs would hit the hole hard.
-Corey Chapman looked REALLY good last night when he got the ball.
-Matt was Matt and was a true playmaker..he has now scored a TD by rushing, receiving, returning a KO, returning a punt, returning an INT, and returning a fumble. All that's left is passing for a TD and returning a blocked kick.
- I felt our boys showed heart and never quit.
The Bad:
- We ran a really condensed offense tonight and a couple playcalls blew my mind such as the FB dive on 4th and 4, the 4th down and short where we ran the option from the broken bone, and electing not to try to amass a drive with 2 minutes left in the first half after we had picked up a first down. We get anything on the board there and the ballgame changes drastically IMO.
- It was evident that we have a very young LB corps as they got blown out of the picture at times.
-Our kickoff coverage looked very, very poor. We don't have enough guys out there who want to break the wedge and hit someone.
-Our crowd was D-E-A-D tonight...it was embrassing.
The Ugly:
-BY FAR OUR WEAKNESS IS TACKLING..... we lock up and we keep Ironton in check.
-The false start penalties on 1st and 2nd downs,,,, as well as the facemask penalty that killed us.
-Matt has got to add a physical side to his running,,,, twice he had the first down but stopped and was then wrapped up short. More than anything I don't want him to get hurt when he loses his momentum like that.
Overall: This is what we needed... reality check, DEFINATELY exploited our weaknesses, and I also can't help but feel we didn't show everythign we have. We didn't run the slant off tackle at all, we seldom ran from the broken bone, and the only time we ran a toss sweep we scored a TD. The boys played hard, they never quit, and I am sure Haywood will get this team to the level of competing for the title again.

i agree that if we dont improve our tackling it will be our downfall, but i am just gonna speak my mind on the crowd situation, what is embarassing is everytime play stops draggin somebody out on the field to honor them for donating money. i mean hey its great they did but if you cant donate money to something for a school without having to have your name mentioned every game , well i would rather watch the boys play in a daggone mud hole. there have been times where they have held up play for a good 6-7 minutes, it may be just me but thats why i feel our crowd hasnt been into any of the games like usual. im sure i will make some pond creekers mad with my opinion but thats just my feelings on the subject......JUST PLAY BALL!!!!!

6-7 minutes? Come on, that's half a quarter, Mr. I.
I think its nice that they honor their big donors for contributing. I've been told they raised over 600 grand in donations for that field and I say why not take a minute and thank them? I can't imagine anyone objecting to that.
If your crowds enthusiasm is down, maybe it is just the new environment. Its not exactly the unfriendly confines of Vipperman. I just cant see you blaming it on a couple of announcements a game between quarters.

Well, I appreciate all the donations that were given, but I am with Mr.I on this one. During the Sc/Belfry game there was several on field introductions between quarters, one in particular that held up play for atleast 2-3 minutes. I think the recognition is great and all, but there needs to be a ceremony planned or something, stop holding up the games for it.
As far as the crowd goes for this past Friday, It was a torrential downpour....My sister and her family was going to go, but they didnt want to go in the rainy weather like it was, amd I am sure it was the same with other folks. The crowds as a whole, they've been standing room only the two games I saw there.
And yes the stadium is new and were used to Vipperman, but in time it will grow on us....When you have played in a stadium for 80 years and then change abruptly it will be different.
I am grateful that we have a safe new school and the best sports facilities in the state. The kids and the Belfry community deserve it.

its more than a couple, and honest to goodness if they forget somebody at the end of a quarter they will bring them oput while the game is being played....im all for honoring them but do it once before a game and get it done...i mean they are doing the same people every game

Mr. I, I hope you don't take this personally, but I got another opinion on the situation you are describing. I talked to my Belfry source (who is a good one) and he disagrees with you and he asked me to post his comments.
He says they only have honored donors at the break of the 1st and 3rd quarters, and they have not honored the same person twice all year. And he says they definitely have not ever stopped a game in play to honor a donor. He did admit that a couple of the announcements ran long and the players were back on the field before they got the honorees off, and it might have held up the start of a quarter by 1 minute minimum.
He also said they are just trying to do the right thing by honoring these donors. Without them, the fine field you guys have would not be possible. He said he regrets if anything they have done has hurt the game or the fans in any way. He knows that you can't please all the people all the time, but they feel like they were doing a good thing by making the announcements.
I have no dog in this fight, but out of respect for my friend, I agreed to offer his version. I will also add that I have seen 2 games there this year and I didn't notice a problem like you have described. But everybody has different views and opinions and I guess that is what makes this world work.

I didnt think Belfry would play with Ironton as well as they did but they gave them all they wanted so nice pirates and good luck in the future

belfry played closer than i figured.. congrats ironton.. lok for belfry in the state championship again

The score is kind of deceiving in my book. The game wasn't that close after halftime. Regardless, we got beat by two TDs (12 pts).
And, IMHO, we had more than a couple of guys who were intimidated by Ironton. Same story, different year.
BTW....Matt Maynard wasn't one of them. And yes folks, he is a baller.
