Seneca 66 - Southern 44
#1
The Seneca High School boys' basketball team got its 11th win of the season last night, an achievement that came a month earlier than it has in recent years.

The Redhawks defeated Southern 66-44 in the opening round of the 62nd annual Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine University.

Seneca has finished 14-14 each of the past two seasons, winning its 11th game in mid-February both years.

But this is a new era of Redhawks basketball.

"Everybody expects tradition to win; it's human nature," Seneca coach Steve Sergeant said. "The ordinary fan, officials, other coaches and younger players expect tradition to win. It's a battle we have to face, but this is another good step."

All seven players who scored for Seneca (11-6) are underclassmen. The Redhawks have already played a brutal schedule, with four of their six losses coming to teams that have been ranked at some point this season.

Seneca will now face 13th Region power South Laurel at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The Redhawks looked the part of a Seventh Region contender last night, opening the second half with a 19-2 run and taking control against Southern (10-7).

Seneca led only 29-24 at halftime but scored the first six points of the third period, then added a 9-0 run later in the surge.

"They got a few turnovers, turned those into layups and just ran over us," Southern coach Todd Raque said. "You can't let a team like that get going."

Junior Aaron Nance led Seneca with 18 points and seven rebounds, junior Jeron Harris added 11 points and sophomore Kevin Shaw had 10 points.

Maurice Thomas had 12 points for Southern, and Chris Richard added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
