These rankings have always meant nothing, the people who put them together are garbage and use a stupid formula. As everyone knows, I'm a huge Valley fan, and we are certainly not #3 in the state, we're not even top 20 without Elisha.

These rankings may not mean much, they just go by points per game to decide the places, but it is still an honor to have 2 mountain teams in the top 3... garbage or not, I am glad to see us get the recognition.

Henry Clay # 20??????? Whoa!!!

I like these rankings, they are the basis for the LIT pairings...that alone gives them importance. I would much prefer an unbiased formula to atleast give some uniformity to than some media person giving their "professional opinion".
I don't think it is as cut and dry as they rank them by points per game....I believe the strength of your opponent as well as the margin of victory factor in, as it should. If you're playing a team that is awful you should beat them by 50, where as if you're playing a good team a 10 point victory could be considered and even bigger win. Its all relative.

So often when two high school teams play each other more than once a season, one team beats the other by 12 to 15 and the next game they play, the other team wins by the same margin or close.
This ranking gives us an idea of where teams may be at this point and since no rankings have been out since pre-season, we needed an updated poll.
Maxpreps.com has #1. Elliott County, #7.Shelby Valley. This poll was as of 12-29.

I'm a fan of EC, but to put them above Scott Co., Holmes, J-Town and Eastern???

So you are saying they don't have the capabilities to beat any of these teams on any given night??????????????

I agree with you, PC. As a Valley fan, it is nice to see our guys get some recognition, but there is no way they are # 3 in the state. Even with a healthy Elisha, that's a bit of a stretch.

I'm saying they may be able to compete with these teams, but just like last year's Mason County game, they do not have the depth nor size to beat these teams consistently. Could they win, sure, that's why they play the game to prove mine, yours and everyone elses opinions.
I like EC a lot, and all of my posts about them have been respectful. I have seen them play, just as I have seen these other teams play, thus I feel that I have a good understanding of the matchups. Holmes can shoot just as well from the outside as EC, but the major difference that all of these teams have in a matchup with EC is rebounding. Each of the four teams mentioned have outrebounded every team that they have played (with the exception of SC's loss to Holmes). Each of these teams would have the ability to get the ball inside and score or draw fouls. If they do not hit free-throws, then advantage to EC.
How do you see the match-up with each of these teams, not just as a fan but objectively?
I rooted for EC against Mason last year, I'd root for them in games against these teams, but, I looking at it objectively.

My first disagreement is........The ref's let Mason win that game......nothing to do with depth or size, Middleton and Setty both hit big threes, but it was the ref's allowing Miller to assault first Knipp, then Ferguson on Mason freethrows that won the game for Mason! As for future matchups with the teams you mentioned......I feel that coaching is the biggest difference.....IMO defense and grit on the part of EC make them no worse than equal to any team in this state! As for Holmes shooting it as good as EC...............I'd say EC's first 5 would out shoot any first 5 in the state!!!!!!!!

These rankings aren't accurate at all. Two mountain teams in the top 3 is nice but it's certainly not correct.

Then we respectfully disagree on the ranking and matchups.
As for the State game last year, well I was at the game too. It's too easy to blame referees. Freethrows, Rebounds and Turnovers were not in the hands of the referees.
As for the coaching, that is a very vague comparison. I guess the only measure is how one coach does when matched up against the other. Since EC's only game against a top 20 team is not until Mason Co, it's hard to make any comparisons for this year. We've already seen the other teams in the top 5 play each other, and they will have additional matchups against each other as the season progresses.

I agree, its easy to blame the refs...............Apparently you were one of the few that didn't agree while boos echoed down on the Rupp floor while Miller was playing by different rules............There was a reason 13,000 out of 15,000 were booing.............. As for freethrows, rebounds, and turnovers........If you have the numbers for both teams in this matchup I would be interested to see them........... As for top 5 teams matching up against one another........... If you look at the map.............You will see that Elliott is a good distance from the teams ahead of them.........But, In your opinion EC should have broke the bank traveling inside the state to play these teams........Interesting........

Disregard my previous post, because I looked it up myself!!!!!!!! You want to point out freethrows, rebounds, and turnovers as not being in the hands of the refs...................Here you go........... Turnovers, EC-8, MC-8. FT's, EC 13 - 15, MC 5 - 16. Rebounds EC 30, MC 34. Calls in the last two minutes that got the court cascaded in boos.....................MC 3, EC 0.............

Man some of you Elliott Co. fans are too sensitive! If someone gets on here and doesn't say that Elliott Co. is the best team in the state or if another team in the state can beat them you have a heart attack. Everyone on here knows that Elliott Co. is a top team in the state, but other people have teams they like or root for, and sometimes they think they are better than Elliott Co.! That is their opinion.
I for one think that Elliott Co. is a great team with some great kids, I've never seen anyone play as hard as the twins and Ferguson do.
But as for you making the above statement, where did they just come from? South Carolina! I believe there were tournaments in state that were closer than Myrtle Beach! Fans in KY want to see the top teams play each other so they can compare them to each other. In the past two years Elliott Co. played one top 20 team in the state of KY., and the Elliott fans talk about this game over and over.
They could have easily played in the King of the Bluegrass or the Republic Bank Tournament (formerly the 5th Third) and played several top 20 teams in the state but I can understand Coach Mays not wanting to take a chance losing to a KY team his last year coaching. All of us that root for seeing those top 20 match-ups will have to wait until the All A or the state tournament which I have NO doubt that they will make it to the sweek 16. I also feel that they will make it out of the 16th Region in the All A too because Euton and Jackson left Rose Hill.

FYI, they were invited to and turned down both the KOtB and the 5th/3rd. Reason being...........They went to the BBC. These 3 tournaments are all at the same time!!!!!!!!!! I find it interesting that last year when they played in the 5th/3rd people complained that they didn't play in a better holiday tourney????? This year, they go to probably the premier holiday tourny in the country, and people cry that they dodged in state tournies?????????? As for the Jackson/Euton cheapshot..........Those kids left so they would have a better chance to get to a sweet sixteen!!!!!! If you look at Scott Co. thus far.......they aren't exactly setting the world on fire!

Wasn't saying that they should turn down the BBC, Letthebighogroot was saying the reason they don't play top 20 in state teams is because of the distance they have to travel. All I was saying was that Myrtle Beach is farther than Louisville or Lexington. I don't blame them one bit playing the BBC.

Now as was said Elliott County did play in the 5/3 last year. At Myrtle Beach this year. They do play just about everybody in their region which at this time is not very strong. That does not help their strength of schedule but I don't think that should be held against them. I believe they should play all of the teams in their region.
BigHog. You could chill a little bit. Don't take everyones opinion so personal.
For what its worth I would rank Elliott County 3rd in the state right now. Holmes being 1st and Scott County 2nd.

Alright........Say you are Elliotts coach.......... First, for seeding purposes you have to play 6 games in your district. Second, as a member of the EKC you must comment 10 games to them...............You are already 16 dates down. You have to plan and hope for a long run in the all (A), you got an invite and plan to attend the BBC, you played the number one teamn from WVa at Bourbon Co., You are gonna play Anderson Co. at Montgomery Co. You are in the works of trying to replace the Greenup Snow-out with a game against Franklin Co. Just Curious..................What would you have done????????

Not knocking Elliott for playing in the BBC. You were saying they were too far in distance from the top teams in KY. I'm glad they played in the BBC and represented KY well.
King of the Bluegrass was before Christmas, the BBC and 5th/3rd were after Christmas.

Not a big Scott Co. fan but at least Scott Co. is playing a schedule that has the top teams in the state and nation.
They have already played:
Ballard - Top 10 in KY
Duncanville, TX - #1 in the nation
Tates Creek
Holmes - #2 in KY, now #1
GRC - Top 15 in KY
Byrns Co. SC
Franklin Co. GA - Top 25 in Nation
Dorman SC
Prestonsburg
Madison Central
Anderson Co.
Still have to play:
Dunbar
Henry Clay -twice
Mason Co.
Bryan Station -twice
Franklin Co.
Lexington Catholic
Madison Central
Toyota Classic (Adair Co., Lou. Central, Covington Catholic, Male, Montgomery Co., Tates Creek & Bourbon Co.)

I was not referring to your post sorry! Well it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say it.
I like Elliott County's team. The Faulkners are the hardest playing and smartest basketball players I have ever seen. They are alot of fun to watch.
Still think Scott County and Holmes are better though.
So much for being the voice of reason I guess.
