Received an email from the KHSAA. They have awarded the 2009-2010 football championships to Bowling Green . The games will be held at WKU. No other cities placed a bid.
The title games have been played in Louisville since 1979.

Horrible.....

Eh, at least WKU stepped up to the plate. If not for them, would we even get to have championships?

Probably won't ever make the trip there unless Prestonsburg makes it to the state championship.

Would even be better if we all went together with Pburg and Belfry, but I think that will happen this year if it does.
As for the games being moved, atleast they stepped up and made the bid. It wont be quiet the same but it will be something different. They do have a nice facility, but not my favorite town in the world, but any Corvette fans will be happy.

They do have a nice facility,,, I only live about 1:30 min from there but if i had to pick where to have it would be at Papa Johns, but like other have said at least they stepped up and placed a bid, if not would there even be championship games ?

Well, I was planning on heading up with some friends the next few years to watch the 6A games, but not with that drive.

Bowling Green is a beautiful city and already hosts the boys and girls golf state tourney and the girls basketball state tourney. Western Kentucky University basically rebuilt their football stadium and holds about 26,00 fans. WKU has a beautiful campus. Playing in Cardinal Stadium sucks in my opinion because it feels almost like playing in an empty stadium. The atmosphere at WKU will be more "football like" and you will see the hospitaliy from the Bowling green people is unmatched. I guarantee the players will like it much better. There is a reason Bowling Green is getting all these state tournaments. Bowling Green ROCKS. Give it a try before you bash it. The extra drive for some folks will be worth it.

No bowling green dose not rock, it is boring. And moving the games there was just stupid, id rather see then at eku then have to go all the way to bowling green.

That's going to be real nice for the Eastern Ky folks. There would have been championship games it may not be as fancy as Poppa Johns but there's surley is a field in the state for these teams to play. KHSSA is a joke.
10-25-2008, 07:47 PM
I do not know if there were any other options other than Bowling Green, but if there were, the EKY teams got the shaft on this deal in my opinion. I would much rather have seen the venue in a more "Central" location.

Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Covington/Newport, and Owensboro are the only cities that are large enough to accommodate everyone.
BTW, Bowling Green was the only city that offered to host the state championships in the future.
Like AP said, WKU's stadium is just big enough to hold everyone comfortably and the atmosphere will be much better than at Papa John's.

While Papa John Cardinal Stadium is very nice, it is too large for the crowds that the title games bring. The games at WKU should be more fun to watch and the crowd will be much louder because they are all together.

I saw in the basketball forum someone said only about 6000 people show up for the football championship finals. Since that is the case it really shouldn't have to be a super size stadium. There are high school fields hold that many.

Yea but moving the games to bowling green is gonna make attendance drop in LARGE numbers. Therefor it'll still be half full like PJS always is.

Why would attendance numbers drop? It's honestly no different then going to Louisville.
To Bowling Green/Louisville from...
Pikeville- 4hrs 33mins / 3hrs 33mins
Corbin- 2hrs 31mins / 2hrs 32mins
Middlesboro- 3hrs 22mins / 3hrs 22mins
Ashland- 4hrs 15mins / 3hrs
Maysville- 3hrs 40mins / 2hrs 26mins
Stanton- 3hrs 4mins / 1hr 49mins
Jackson- 5hrs 2mins / 2hrs 31mins
Hazard- 3hrs 24mins / 3hrs 6mins
Harlan- 3hrs 45mins / 3hrs 46mins
From the numbers above there is no significant change in estimated time travel.

I just wonder how the crowds will be now for the Louisville state championship games.

In years past, only the 6A game would come close to or surpass that number. All the other games will fit in pretty nicely with still plenty of room. Also, the 6A crowds should fit because there is usually 1 or 2 Louisville teams in the championship game and those fans may not fill the stadium in BG like they do in Louisville.

I am 45 mins from BG & 1:30 Min from Louisville so it dosen't matter to me where it is played at as long as the school has a place to play, Thats what should matter.

This is really bad for the Eastern KY folks for sure. A person can say it's not that big of difference I dissagree. You can go to milage estimator or what ever for me it always takes more time to get there than what it says it will take.On a long trip that suppose to take 2 hrs to get there the majority of the time you can add an hour.

Some of you folks need to look at a map of Kentucky. Bowling Green is actually in South Central Kentucky. It depends on where you live in eastern Kentucky as to how much further it will take you to get there. Plus, if your team is playing in the finals a few more miles won't matter. The last couple of years when Bowling Green played Trinity and St.X in the Raffertys Bowl there was over 10,000 fans there. Those big schools from Louisville have huge fan support. The KHSAA may be crazy but after they have the finals in Bowling Green for two years they will probably keep them here for a long time.

Folks, don't knock it yet until you try it.
I have a feeling the atmosphere will be much more condusive to a State Championship feel.
Additionally, even if the Finals were in Paducah, you know good and well that the teams from EKY would travel there.

I agree that the few extra miles will not matter when it is "Title-time."

For me, this is somewhat heart breaking. My dad and one of his closest friends, myself along with my best friend have made that trip the last 5 or 6 years. always a good time. and we always stopped at a place called "Ken-Tex" in shelbyville. guess we will make one final trip since WKU is about 4 and a half hours from home. hopefully my home team can make a run at it. things look good so far.

It's a tradition of stopping at a certian resturant is what I think thry meant. But i could be wrong though.
I have nothing against BG but as far as the drive and cost getting their will be quite a bit more I don't care how you spin it.

I'm glad Bowling Green got it. Its not that bad of a drive.
Getting in and out of Papa John's Stadium is a zoo. I think this is much better.
