Beechwood is most defiantly one of the better teams in the state regardless of class and shouldn't have much of a problem winning state in 1A. They dominated the line of scrimmage and come up with two interceptions on defense in the 1st quarter to really put the game out of reach early. Prestonsburg never even really tried to get the run game going but I thought Burchett threw the ball very well today outside of the two interceptions but hopefully the Blackcats will learn a lot from this game and come back home for homecoming and take care of business against Pikeville.
Congrats Tigers!

Wow! I thought this was gonna be a close game. Guess I was wrong.

Pretty sorry effort by Prestonsburg, they didn't deserve to win.

Wow. This may mean Prestonsburg is a little overated. First real test and they dropped it big time. That was the toughest team on their schedule and should be their only loss on the season. Maybe if they schedule a few more teams of this caliber it would make them alot better team though.

This game says alot IMO about both teams!
10-11-2008, 11:51 PM
No suprise here at all.

Congrats Tigers! Beechwood is for real. I know that P-burg has a good passing game, but mainly against local teams. It gets a lot tougher against the NKY teams!

Anyone have Stats on this game?

Ok, lets not "dis" prestonsburg here. Beechwood is a awesome team no matter what. I honestly do believe they could take all the mountain teams easily as well. Prestonsburg didnt show there potential tonight. So they lost. Plain and Simple.

I watched the first half of this game and i was real impressed with Beechwood today. I watched the Covington Catholic game and wasnt impressed. But i guess opinions can change quickly. But to me i really don't want to put the Prestonsburg team down and say that was mentally ready but they wasn't. It looked like they were intimated by the tigers. Im sure they wasn't but the play of both the offense and defense showed it to me. But i feel P-burg playing a team of that caliber will help them down the stretch in the playoffs. So Good Luck P-Burg and Good Win Beechwood.

What was Prestonsburg record coming into this game and who had they played? Just curious. Do they play anyone out of their class? What I mean by that is, Beechwood a 1A school will play Cov. Cath. a 5A school. Does Prestonsburg play up on their schedule when they are not playing a district game?

And there in lies the problem. You better get on their butt and good. To be the best you have to play the best and if you settle for not beating the best and a poor showing you better work harder and get stronger.

So far we've beat Paintsville (1A), Breathitt County (3A), Bath County (2A), Lawrence County (4A), and Morgan County (2A).

I would be interested in hearing the opinion of Prestonsburg fans who made the trip to the game yesterday (who were also at the game last year) how does this Beechwood team stack up to the team that they saw last year?
Prestonsburg will be okay. They definitely have some players .. and will bounce back quickly.

Other reports that I have read on this game, say that Prestonsburg played their starters the entire game against Beechwood's 3rd string. Any truth to that?
10-12-2008, 10:52 AM
Seriously, P-burg is much better than last year IMO and Beechwood is much better than last year too. But Beechwood is a much better team than most of the teams in EKY, whereas P-burg is above average. IMO, only teams like Belfry, Johnson Central, Ashland, Raceland, Bell Co. and few others are the only teams east of Lexington that would be capable of beating Beechwood.

I wouldn't say they could EASILY beat all the mountain teams. Pburg isn't anywhere close to being on the same level as Bell, Belfry or Johnson Central. Prestonsburg has had a weak schedule for the past few years. Maybe this game will teach them somthing.

Belfry is NOT the Belfry of the last few years !!!!!!

I'm assuming you've seen Beechwood play? If not, you really have no idea what you're talking about. And to say Prestonsburg isn't anywhere close to being on the same level as those teams is far-fetched to say the least.
Prestonsburg just wasn't ready for this game on any level. It was on a Saturday at 4:00 PM, which I thought was pretty stupid and it showed, they just weren't in their norm. I'm not saying Prestonsburg is better than Beechwood, but I don't think Beechwood is 29 points better than Prestonsburg. They were out-coached, out-played, and just plain and simple got it handed to them.

In gory detail, the young Blackcat linemen were shown where they are and where they need to be at season's end. Hopefully, this game will be applied as a learning experience as you can't get better until you play someone better. And Beechwood was just plain better.
NOTHING works on either side of the ball when a line gets overmatched. If P-burg is going to make noise in 2A this season, it MUST get better in the trenches.

Beechwood was horrible on TV last week... I dont care who plays them... I se them getting beat by Raceland if they play.. I see everyone getting beat by raceland this year... yea I hate to say it but Oct 31 is going to be tough for Russell...
This one could go either way, but I see Raceland coming inot Russell undefeated.

Why is that a point that nobody wants to comment on? Why would you leave all of your starters in anyways, with it being a nondistrict out of class game to begin with?

Is this post for real?
Raceland may be good ... I can assure you .. no one from Beechwood is overlooking Raceland. Or at this point ... even thinking about Raceland.
I would be curious to know what part of the Cov Cath game looked so miserable. But ... the impression from nearly every other part of the state (with the exception of EKY) was that Beechwood looked pretty decent against Cov Cath. Cov Cath is down ... but they are a solid team (again--definitely not one of the better Cov Cath teams at all). But Beechwood easily dominated the LOS--and just about every other aspect of the game except for Pat VanSant.
I believe that you are one of the people who picked Prestonsburg over Beechwood. Well ... I would be very interested in your assessment AFTER the game. Beechwood didn't have a lot of trouble ...and started subbing liberally after the first series in the 2nd half. Judging by your thoughts ... a person would also assume that you think that Raceland would crush the Blackcats (which I am not buying).
Overall--to Prestonsburg .... keep plugging away. You have a great team--and your program is classy. The kids in the program are solid young men--who left a good impression on me (#7 in particular--when I was walking up the ramp ... "excuse me sir" .. when he was barely close enough to be near). That was enough to show me that the Blackcats have a classy program. That kind of stuff matters.
A smart man once told me "you learn a lot more from a loss than from any win" ... don't let yesterday slow you down.
Good luck to the Blackcats and their fans for the rest of the season.

I watched the game yesterday. Beechwood wouldn't come close to Bell. Beechwood and P-Burg is good so im not trying to take anything away from the two teams. But they wouldn't come close to Bell County.

Yeah the starters played the whole game, there's not much I can say because I'm not a coach. But I honestly think Beechwood's backups and JV could have scored on Prestonsburg's defense yesterday because they moved the ball alright against them in the 4th quarter.
Like I said in the opening post, Beechwood is one of the best teams in the state regardless of class. As a matter of fact one ranking (I believe the CJ's LIT) has Beechwood as #12 in state with Highlands, St. X, Trinity, etc.
I don't see anyone in class A giving Beechwood a game at all, including Hazard, LCA, and Raceland.

I agree. Prestonsburg's defense was horrendous yesterday, just downright embarrassing to watch because they showed no pride or any heart at all. Just looked like they didn't want to be there.

That's just your opinion, everyone has them. And here's mine, I don't think anyone in the state could completely handle Beechwood with the possible exception of St. X and Trinity. Either way, there is no way we will be able to tell.

Please don't lump us all in as EKY. I personally though Beechwood looked pretty impressive against CC and said so then. I don't see a A school staying within 2 TDs of them.
