Yea i was at practice scrimmaging and i hit the quarterback knocked him down fell and landed funny on my ankle. It poped really loud and now its swelled the size of a baseball. Is it broken sprained etc? It hurts really bad but i do not want to go to Pikeville Medical sit in the ER for 3 hours...

Stay off of it, keep it elevated, and keep ice packs on it tonight.

Rather than judging by the swelling, look for bruising tomorrow morning. That means something had to tear (at least). If you see any sign of bruising at the ankle or on the outside edge of the foot, GET IT TREATED.

And when I say "stay off it", I mean OFF IT. Keep the foot OFF the floor and have someone help you around if you don't have anything to use.

Yea i have ice packs on it right now and its proped up on a pillow. I have a small cut on the swelling it looks like a bee sting

What about the brown paper bag and veniger trick?

Well after I hurt my ankle my freshman year, I went to the doctor who proceeded to send me to x rays. It was 2nd degree sprain so nothing too bad
Off about a week or so.

As for the vinegar trick my brother did it after he hurt his leg and all it would do was burn his skin because the lack of oxygen there and the acid in the vinegar

All you can do it the RICE treatment

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Going to college to be a physical therapist lol

I'm an Xray tech, so I'll tell you what I can.

Statistically, you are about 5 times more likely to sprain/strain your ankle rather than break it. However, all those injuries look exactly the same on the outside. I've xrayed ankles which I thought nothing was wrong, which were broken. I've xrayed ankles which were so bruised I just knew they were broken, but nothing showed on the xray film.

If you stand on it and put all your weight on it and move, does it make a crunchy sound/feeling? If it crunches, it's more than likely broken, however, only a doctor can truly tell you, and most of them will want an xray to be sure.

Properly treated, you'll recover from a broken bone faster and easier than you will a sprain/strain. Either way, go to a doctor ASAP, because if it's swollen that bad then you really shouldn't be playing on it: it could cause permanent damage, even losing the use of that foot, if you reinjure it.

I played two quarters on a pretty severely sprained ankle my Junior year, but we won so it was all good. I missed practice on Monday though.

I figured it was just a sprain....I've done that to my ankle a few times. I did it last year when I was at Pikeville College, my ankle was all black and blue but I sucked it up and walked from my apartment up that dang hill every day. Put some tape on it, spat your cleat up and get back to work Big Grin

Give it a few days and let is rest dont go rushing back into it and injure yourself even more, your team may need you.

Well i'm only a freshman, and I can walk on it but it only hurts real bad when I turn on it! I bought a McDavid ankle brace and it makes a huge difference! So I think i'll try to practice tomorrow because were doing a light practice and I should be ok by Monday if the swelling is gone.

If you are only a freshman, take care of it. You have alot of years ahead of you to play. Heal yourself now. An injury like that could come back to haunt you. Like, it's your senior year and your heading into the playoffs and because you sprained your ankle as a freshman and didn't take care of it now you have a loose ankle that won't stay in place. Surgery is what you have to do because now you can't run 50 yards without it messing up on you.

Believe me I know what I'm talking about. My son did the same thing his freshman year. High ankle sprain. He could still walk and stuff and it didn't seem that bad. He didn't and hasn't taken care of it the way he was suppose to. Well he is now a Jr. starter and just saw the dr. Monday because it has become extremely painful. He has a cronic sprain and hopefully he may make it thru the season but when the season is over he will be going into surgery to tighten up his ankle so that hopefully it won't be an issue his senior year.

Heal yourself. Do it for the team.

High ankle sprains are the worst kind, I've had a high sprain a few times on the same ankle and it's no fun at all. Hope you can get it back to 100% soon man.

The best you can is not good enough if you think you are going to practice on Monday. Don't be stupid. I know you are a freshman and you want to do everything right and look tough, but you have a long road ahead of you. You may start next year but not if you let your pride get in the way and screw up your recovery. It is not about you looking good, it is about what is best for the team in the future. If you are not a major contributor, then rest and your day will come and you need to be 100 percent. If you are a contributor at the freshman level your coaches would be telling you the same thing, unless they are stupid.
