56th District 08-09
#1
Any predictions??
#2
1)Powell
2)Estill
3)Lee
4)Owsley

Owsley Co. has returning talent to be #1 or 2. Turner and Wright can flat out play. Alot will depend on who the coach is next season. If Paul Green and Mike Turner are back at the helm the Lady Owls will be the clear cut favorites and top 5 in the region.

You say they are clear cut the favorite, but bluerassballa says they are last in the district. Must be wide open then.

Paul Green had some success at Owsley County, he a couple of district championships. If I am not mistaken Wallace Bates was Paul Greens assistant coach, and that Mike Turner was just the guy who kept stats.

I think the Lady Owls have a good chance to win it all!

im getting tired of hearing every year that Owsley County is going to win it all. Youve been saying this year after year and they never seem to make it past the first round in the district tourny. stop trying to talk them up, with the season starts maybe people will realize they never pull it out. you can say theyre good all you want but when it comes down to it they never are much of a threat. IMO it will be Powell or Estill....

Powell

I am tired of everyone thinking Owsley can't do anything! We will see when the season starts.

Estill hosts the 56th and gets players back from injury. Estill and Powell are close but give the slight edge to Estill.

i think that with the new coach Paul Green, the Lady Owls will have a great team this year and will either be 2nd or 3rd! but we will see!!!

Owsley County won the district in 2005. New coach Paul Green was the coach then, and was the coach in 1999 when they also won it. The Lady Owls probably have more district titles than any other 56th district team since girls basketball was resumed as a KHSAA sport in 1975. I believe the # of titles is 12 or 13 championships. Do a little research before you make post like this.
And BTW they will be as good as anyone in the district this year. Don't be surprised if they don't win another 56th championship. Green is a very good coach, and although they have a mixture of young and older talent, they will still be one of the favorites imo.

Ya' know, Owsley doesn't only have Turner and Wright, they also have the Gilbert twins and Combs returning. They are not going to be all that bad if you want my opinion. I do beleive that they will be alright. Coach Green is a talented young coach and he knows the game. I do think that the Lady Owls will be rather exciting this year as it unfolds in the season.
Good Luck to Coach Green and his Lady Owls!!!!!!!!!

Powell will win the 56th but Owsley Co. will give them competition. Lee and Estill will be ok but no match for the other two.
#17
I agree monkeyface... Powell will win it this year.... I am tired of people saying Owsley is going to get it... My opinion I think it will come down to estill and powell like it does every year.... So quit saying Owsley is going to win it because they never make it past the first game... So keep saying stuff that is not the truth like Owsley winning district... They don't have a chance... It's between Powell and Estill...

whoa...do you have this upside down??
I think Powell has the upper hand right now. With McFarland, Barnett, Mays and Howard, they should be solid. Also, they've got the depth advantage and Coach Jones knows what he's doing.

Other than that, the rest is completly up for grabs.

Estill needs to prove themselves before everyone starts giving them the #2 spot. The two Minix girls are good. But they need back up. Estill is scrappy and will always fight for a win. Also, from I can tell, there is severe lack of size down low for the Lady Neers.
Owsley needs to finally back up what they've been saying all these years. Turn Wright and Turner loose and let them play together!! Wright is soo young and athletic and I think will complement Turner greatly. Along with the Gilbert twins behind the arc, they could do some damage.
Lee needs to rebuild...greatly. After losing five seniors and four them starters they are looking ahead at a long season if they don't do something about it. Only players I see bringing alot to the table are Bowling and Hobbs. Adams is out for the season with a severe knee injury.

Preseason picks, I have to go with the Lady Pirates. The rest is open.

Powell Co. will have to prove that the point guard position (Courtney Jones graduated) has been adequately addressed. The district is at Estill. The homecourt will give the slight nod to the Engineers.
#20
Powell should be the favorite in the 56th. Following behind will be Estill, Owsley, then Lee. Owsley could come before Estill. With Turner and Wright they should be decent.

Last year, Coach McKinley at Estill dealt with the loss of four possible starters for the year. Lost the first ten games. Finished by playing Powell down to the absolute wire for the district championship with a roster full of Freshmen and Sophomores. Now, they are a year older. Explain how Powell is an obvious favorite. By any rational observation, which is often absent, Estill is either favorite or co-favorite, with a slight edge because the district is at Estill.
#23
Estill isn't the favorite. Estill played Powell down to the wire with players with injuries. Powell is the favorite.

And, ultimately, this is what the season and post season is for: shall we chat again in late February, early March?

I believe estill had MOST of them injured players back by district play.

I agree bobcatfan... All the injuted players that estill had at the beginning of the year was back when it come district time...

I believe Brandenburg was cleared to play from the torn ACL a couple of weeks before tournament. I believe Radar was at WKU in her program of study. I believe the Cole girls were injured all year. I believe your capitilization of "most" is most unfortunate.

You statement here is, of course, untrue.

1.Powell with Barnett, Mcfarland, and Rogers leading the way
2. Estill as a team unit
3. Owlsley Turner is good and could challenge Estill for the 2 spot
4. Lee Bowling is ok and not much else
