East Carter @ Prestonsburg (Scrimmage) 8/8
#1
East Carter travels down 23 tomorrow afternoon to scrimmage with the Blackcats.

This makes 3 straight years EC's head coach Tim Champlin, has agreed to scrimmage with the Cats. He brings in a talented team that returns Landon Yoak, who's one of the best running backs in 3A.

Prestonsburg has had a great offseason. Seen a lot of younger guys mature and hit the weight room hard. Looking forward to seeing how those guys look against someone other than their teammates. I don't expect Coach Hager and staff to show too much, but mainly work in base plays and formations and see which guys take advantage of their opportunities.

Scrimmage is set to begin at 6:30 PM at Blackcat Stadium.

Hoping for an injury free scrimmage... Go Blackcats!

When are the Carter Co teams consolidating? Is it known yet what class they will be?

2028 is when construction is expected to be completed.

I'd imagine they'll be 4A with Ashland Blazer, Greenup, Boyd, Johnson Central, and Rowan Co.

Have to see what happens during the next realignment cycle.

Blackcats were really impressive tonight on both sides of the ball. Mistakes were made, but some young guys stepped up and made plays.

Pburg still has a lot to iron out, but I really like where the team is at right now. They played hard, fast, and physical tonight.

It was 10 mins all night possession flipped for another 10 mins. Prestonsburg scored 7 times to East scoring 3 times. I think the varsity 1s only give up 1 touchdown. The rest were when guys were rotating in and out.

Yoak & McGuffin were good playmakers for East Carter. Their entire backfield was very physical and gave the Blackcats DL & LBs some great work.

East Carter is going to have good team that should compete with Russell for district championship.

Blackcats travel to Lawrence County next week for their final scrimmage. Should be an absolute dandy.

that will be interesting to see how it all ends up. One would think merging a 2A and a 3A school would instantly put them in 5A or a bigger 4A. But Carter Co could possibly lose kids to Boyd, Elliot, Rowan, Lewis and Lawrence Co in the process of consolidating. The property the new school will be on isn’t exactly centralized. There’s a lot of variables that will come into play when they are finally up and running and I know there are a lot of people NOT on board with the consolidation.

My takeaway from the scrimmage is that East has two extremely good RB’s this year. I remember Yoak from last year but I don’t remember the other kid, both are very powerful runners with great instincts and great speed. I think they will be a handful in 3A this year and will probably win their district fairly easily with Russell losing so much from last year. Their defense needs a little work up front but they’re extremely physical and Champ always does a great job with making that 4-4 disciplined and violent, so I don’t think they’ve got anything to worry about this year.

I thought Pburg looked amazing for the first scrimmage. Johnson looked like he’s been running Hagers offense his whole life. He was calm and comfortable on every snap, whether under center or in shotgun. Pburg doesn’t have the speed at RB like they had last year with Elliott and Harris, but they make up for it with depth. We look to have 4 or 5 RBs that can flat run over top of or around anybody we play, especially with the size and physicality that our line is playing with right now. Should be a very fun season!

Feels good to have football back in the burg again!

Kain Patton was also not dressed for this scrimmage. One of the best athletes in the mountains.

So they looked that good without the Patton kid.

The reason they look good this early is because Coach Hager didn’t take vacation during practice time and instead took it during dead period. You heard it here first.

Or it could because they were able to beat East Ridge and Betsy Layne in the playoffs last season, they are suddenly title contenders and are going to make a run to Kroger Field.

Come on guys! I've toned it down! The only fans I troll on here anymore are the Raceland fans and I like those guys! And they will win a championship soon and I won't even have them to kick around anymore!
