The Tubby Smith coaching award went to Coach Davis. Close again, but no cigar.
Maybe the Cards will get back to Rupp in my grandkids generation

Hmmm seems like I tried telling everyone that north was playing the best basketball coming into the region tourney and look who come out on top, and I’m pretty sure I told you that south wouldn’t be able to get to the free throw line and that’s when they loose and guess what happened

And I'm pretty sure you will tell us again... and again.

Scratch was right and I disagreed with him until i seen them shoot the lights out against corbin. They were definitely the hottest team in the region coming into the week and continued throughout. They made the shots when it mattered late and matched the physical play.
The game was a blood bath. I wanted to let them play but lord that was a little over the top. Anyone in that arena would agree they let those boys do anything they wanted. Great hustle by both teams.
I think Jeff Davis is the best coach in the region cause individually he has not ever had the BEST talent on the roster.Today he did. He had superman. He had the better team. He had the lead most of the game. He had the ball with 2 minutes to go and didn’t get a shot off. He had multiple chances to draw up a play for a good shot. Never happened there wasn’t one good look in the last 4 minutes plus overtime. Down 3 they wasted 20 seconds and shot a layup. So many turnovers. Bad Coaching Performance.
However I do not give all the credit for the turnaround to Valentine. I give it to the North Laurel Guards. The supporting cast. I called them out a few weeks ago and they shut me up. Jervis was knockdown. Rawlings looked like a prime Ray allen catch and shoot. Elza was a go to bucket. They were completely out of sync on offense cause plays were just nonexistent but they created shots and fought for rebounds. It was AAU ball and they straight up wanted it more. The players out hustled and did what it takes to win.
This is undoubtedly the best win in the history of Valentine. He deserves credit for letting the boys play how they should. Bombs away. Went away from his normal routine and played them the best way to win. I know one coach who used to coach for north that forced his players to play his way and it resulted in them practicing baseball now. He’s a 3 time region winner. Even though he’s my version of Calapari for HS basketball talent wise, when you win you win. Congrats. I’m a jaguar fan until the end of march.
He got the most open bracket in years for a 13th team. He should find himself playing on saturday here in a few weeks at rupp.

From about the last 3 mins of the 4 quarter the refs just let the game get out of control, i understand letting them play but it just got to physical and sloppy at the end, however I don’t think it would have changed the outcome. Davis lost this game before the season started when the younger Steele brother decided to no play this year. They lacked a true PG

Thoughts... for what they're worth.
1. Some of us owe Valentine an apology. Not for him being a penis, but for saying he is a terrible coach. He did some good things tonight. He had his guys playing their best ball in March. He deserves credit.
2. Jefferson Davis... Like his Confederate counterpart from 160 years ago, he oversaw a strategy that won him some battles but eventually lost him the war. Like the Confederate president, Jeff Davis' strategy primarily focused on a defensive approach. And he's very good at that. However, in the end, YOU HAVE TO SCORE THE BALL!!! Being unable to score has been a problem for Davis and South for, what seems like, further back than Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox.
3. Joshua Mabe... was it , what, seven points. NO WAY!!! Something wrong there. That can't happen.
4. The Jervis kid had how many? And they still won?
5. Once it got to 43-all, I wasn't sure if anyone would ever score again. South literally scored 1 point in , what was it, the last 7+ minutes of the game. And you have a stud like Mabe. How does that happen?
6. Two things I always look at come March(and I've been around for a lot of Marches): Who is playing the best ball at tourney time and does anyone have to beat a team for the third time , or more. North was peaking right and tourney time and South had to do a three-peat over them. Never easy to accomplish.
7. I still believe South would win a 10-game series, with 7 wins in the ten. But on this night the Jags just executed a little better down the stretch. Got to give the Jags credit. They earned this title with wins over Corbin, Harlan County, and South. I'll be rooting for them to do well at Rupp.
8. Sounded like both teams left it all out on the floor. I don't think either team played its best game, but the opposing team had something to do with that. These type of games are almost always pretty ugly. The winner is usually just whoever comes out of the fray less mucked up. Tonight it was the Jags.
9. As long as big Reese is a Jag, don't count them out for another one next season. He's a difference-maker.
10. Good luck, Mr Mabe. it's been a pleasure, and a nightmare, watching you, kid. You are a class act. Go make us proud at the next level.
11. North is playing well enough, and has the kind of draw, to be playing two weeks from this Saturaday at Rupp. I wouldn't mind that.
12. Maybe I'll get my Arena lemonade next season. How much is a soft drink now... $8 ??? :)
And so it goes... Another 13th region regular season and tourney in the books. More than 50 of them for me.

Scoring a single point in OT is inexcusable. I’m tired of hearing about great defense this and great defense that. Have to score to win games. It’s sounds simple, yet it’s the truth.
I don’t know where South goes from here. There’s some good kids coming up, but nobody has the look of a star such as Mabe, or a JJ Ramey etc. some of the decent kids coming up are North transfers, so it begs the question, what’s going on with middle school ball.
In the end, I just wonder if it’s time for a change in south London. One sweet 16 in the last fifteen years at a school like South isn’t good optics.

I thought the key point in the game was early third quarter when South scored the first four points of the half to get up 28-21 and it looked like they might be on the verge of pulling away. But North answered with back to back threes to cut it to 28-27, and it was a rock fight from there.
I thought Cooper Elza was great for North last night, handled the ball well, hit a couple of big shots in regulation then hit all the pressure packed feee throws in overtime. And Davidson really bothered Mabe, almost never let him get to the rim and forced him into taking a lot of shots from really bad angles.
I don’t know about two wins at Rupp. North should be favored over Breathitt in the first round, but that’s certainly not a gimme. And if George Rogers Clark is sitting there in the quarters, North would be an underdog to them. But the opportunity is there.

There’s a few directions to go, none of them involve Steve Wright. Although, he had built South into a machine in the 2000’s.

There’s a few directions to go, none of them involve Steve Wright. Although, he had built South into a machine in the 2000’s.

lol, he couldn’t do much at Rupp with Reed on the court. Literally NBA talent. They get a decent draw against Breathitt.
maybe coach Valendouche can shock the world!

I remember when Steve Wright got up on St. Camillus by 100 points and was still pressing full court. Great guy...

North decided to still play the shoot when open style of play rather than drive in on mabe every possession. Yes they scored 49 but had 43 in 26 minutes of basketball before it became a war. They had multiple threes every quarter and won long rebounds on the misses. All the role players were willing to let it fly not just the top 2 guys. They played to their strengths. Rawlings is a catch and shoot warrior, if he had got to this tournament and decided to drive and finish on mabe they would lose. He didn’t. He pulled the trigger countless times behind the college line and made a fair share of them. The team that attempted the most threes in this tournament every game won. Valentine could’ve pulled a sizemore and shot 5 threes in 30 minutes. But he didn’t. And they won so congrats cards.(03-11-2025, 12:30 AM)Gridiron_Raid Wrote: Scratch was right and I disagreed with him until i seen them shoot the lights out against corbin. They were definitely the hottest team in the region coming into the week and continued throughout. They made the shots when it mattered late and matched the physical play."Letting the boys play how they should. Bombs away" and scored 44 points in 36 min of basketball... really seems like bombs away. Do not be surprised when the Bobcats give them a good game, do not know if they can win but would not be surprised.

Are you saying the odds are against Coach Pope being great? I do think that most great coaches are narcissists, at the very least.

Valentine is John Calapari at a HS level. He wins cause he had the most talent and it wasn’t close but could never pull it off when it mattered at Rupp. This year he changed the narrative and won with less. Kudos.

I’m not a Uk fan but the jury is still out on the pope debate, he lost some very questionable games at times. It was his first season but in the transfer portal era you can have some good teams in your first season. I see pope as a guy thar will do enough to keep uk fans hopeful in March but never getting it done

I’m going to have to disagree with this statement. Since he won everyone says he was the best players all season no said he has the best players, Corbin south and Harlan was all 3 of pretty much equal talent then north, bell co as well just not a good game plan against south, valentine out coached coach P really bad then done the same to jones and Davis

I make the Cal statement cause he had a surplus of talent in the past and would lose to pikeville in the first round of the sweet 16 which is pretty similar. This year he had less talent, had ups-and-downs and then the team peaks in march with role players becoming big moment stars.

I thought Coach P had a tough year. Maybe needs some time away from the game. Has he gotten fat and lazy , like Cal??? Not saying he has, just asking.

I mean change isn’t all ways a bad thing for both sides, it probably wouldn’t hurt Corbin to get someone younger a little more motivated, and coaching your kid sometimes isn’t the best thing to do either, but I’m sure Hamlin is going to jump on which ever job opens first between Corbin and south and if I’m Corbin I think I wouldn’t let him be the head coach at south

And so it goes... Another 13th region regular season and tourney in the books. More than 50 of them for me.
