Coach Smith resigning March 15th From Phelps
#1
Saw a Facebook post today from Coach Cameron Smith out Phelps saying he will resign from all positions at Phelps on march 15th. Anyone know what’s going on?

I’m sure Coach Smith will explain it when he feels ready to do so but it’s a shock for the region. If I’m the Phelps administration, I’m begging him to stay. They’re relevant for the first time in my lifetime. No way they fill his shoes.

They were probably better than they were now about 5 years ago. It was really a one year run but Jason Sanson had a great team led by a top 5 player in the region in Trey Francis. They won the district and finished with over 20 wins. Think it was during the covid season. But if he is gone Phelps will take 10 steps back unless they get a miracle. With it's location unless you are from Phelps your not going to get someone out of area to come to Phelps. Would like to see Brent Perry bring him on staff if that's something he would be interested in next season.

It was the season that COVID wiped out the state tournament. It was really nice seeing Phelps at the region that year as that community came out in droves. Did Francis wind up playing college basketball anywhere?

Hopefully Coach Smith will change his mind, as he has Phelps trending in the right direction.

This is definitely a shocker. Never want to speculate as to why he will be stepping down, but if he sticks to it, he will be tough to replace over there, he has really turned that program around the last few years.
#6
guess its better to lose by 45 with kids from stopover than by 8 with kids from canada
#7
Big loss for Phelps. Think he is going somewhere else? If you can win any games there you can win almost anywhere.

Was this Coach Smith's decision or was he forced to step down? If he sticks with this decision will players on the team now leave Phelps?

Again, don't know many details so it's tough to speculate, but if administration did force him to step down, you figure it would be immediate, even with about a month left of the season, but maybe that is why he is staying on to finish it out. Really makes you wonder what the players there will do, they've built a solid foundation with the Weddington kid and then Rash coming in as well.

Heard the principals kid wasn’t playing enough and he wanted the coach gone. Basically..

Heard something similar but didn't want to say it because I didn't know if true. I mentioned when Zade Rash went over there would everyone be okay with a kid joining a team mid season and taking other kids minutes who had been there from day 1. When you add a talented piece mid season roles will change and someone's minutes will decrease or someone's starting spot will be taken. How will they handle that? Does Phelps even have a middle school team? I think Coach Smith leaving could destroy that program. Doubt they will get the transfers they've gotten if he's not the coach. They have some talented underclassman but they need a coach that wants to be at Phelps and it sounds like they've ran off one that was serious about building the Phelps program.

Heard Jimmy Chitwood plans to suit up next week for the Hornets and they make a run for a Regional Chip!

Here’s what I’ll say: Coach Smith is a fantastic coach and an even better guy. He and I have spoken pretty extensively over the last year and I’d 100% be in favor of him leading my program. Who knows, maybe he and I finally get the opportunity to team up in the future.

Agree completely. If that happens, your guys team would have a fan in me because I know the players will be treated well and taught right by two of the better people you could find.

I just saw that Cameron’s brother Cody was forced to resign today. Listen, I’ve sat back and watched this transpire and the fact that an administration, namely a principal with a son who didn’t get to play as much as he wanted, is forcing his hand because of his own kid is disgusting. The Pike County BOE oughta clean house over this. I don’t know the principal’s son or what kind of player he is but with the season Phelps was having and excitement Cameron and staff brought to little ole Phelps, they should have statues built. But no, daddy had to puff his chest out and force the staff to resign because little Johnny isn’t getting the playing time daddy feels he deserves. Sick of East KY politics. It’s sickening. I hope Cam and Cody end up at a district school and put it all over Phelps for years to come.

Couldn't agree more! You'd be hard pressed to find a better person than Cody Reynolds, so to force a resignation is a farce. Cameron and Cody should have their pick of jobs after the season.

Is this facts or just a rumor as to why he is resigning? Phelps isn't a place where people are running to coach at. But winning isn't the main priority for everyone as long as little Johnny gets to play. Again I have no clue the facts of this situation.

They’re facts. I know I get on here and say a lot but I’m not going to make up scenarios under any circumstance. Cameron and Cody are being run out of Phelps because the principal’s kid isn’t getting to play much.

Agree 100%. You can tell the whole community comes out and supports them. Honestly, probably one of the best home crowd gyms you will ever go to. They come out game after game to support their team. Great people in Phelps for sure.

if the people of phelps take any measures to have something done about the principal someone post it in this thread so that we can support cameron smith because what they are doing is ridiculous!!!

and yes @BCF4L im not sure who you are i saw you implied u coach earlier but phelps is a great hostile place to watch a game THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TOO BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It will be interesting to see if Phelps has any players leave due to this decision. I seriously doubt they will get any International kids to move in like Smith was able to do. Weddington was at Belfry in middle school and went back home to Phelps when Smith took the job. Rash left Belfry to go over there but with the new transfer rule will he be allowed to transfer again since he has already transferred. Really unfortunate situation for Phelps. I do think Smith will be coaching somewhere next season.

I used to be an assistant at Prestonsburg High. Was an assistant at the middle school here in Prestonsburg when we won the 8th grade state championship in Lexington. I have a son that plays for Prestonsburg now and is a senior.

Hate to see this coaching staff go. They had actually put Phelps on the map for the first time in a long time. Both brothers seem to be passionate and have been able to build and develop their players. I don’t know why they are leaving, but it will be hard to replace them at Phelps.

Are both coaches resigning immediately now?

I’ve not seen anything to indicate Cameron is resigning right now. I know that Cody was forced to resign today because he has some sort of made up vendetta about the principal’s son, but I still think it’s the intentions of Cameron to finish out the season and see what’s available afterwards.

from what i hear they have been making stuff up and exagerating things all season to try to put pressure on the coach for kids (specially the principals kid!!!!!) not playing...........

also saw there is a board of education meetin tomorrow some phelps ppl discussin going i hope the word gets out because for all i have been told the principal is actingout of line and it is not an one time incident

I’ve lived in the mountains too long to be surprised by stuff like this, now it just makes me sad. Hopefully Coach Smith can find a school that appreciates his talents and lets him coach basketball without all the other BS. He’s an excellent basketball coach!

The question now is.   Who would even want to take over this team if the job is being dictated by the principal.   Phelps may be in some serious trouble after the season finale!

If chitwood is out there that’s a state championship.
