Zade Rash to Phelps
#1
Wow
#2
Has he been cleared by the KHSAA to play? Didn’t think you’re allowed to play for 2 teams in the same district in the same season?

Just happened and he will be. Shyla Kidd moved to Betsy Layne from Pikeville the same week BL vs FC district girls game Friday night and she played.

If this is true, does it help Phelps? By this point in season everyone should be settling into there spots and understanding what they have to do to win. Rash will want to score the ball and that is gonna make someone else mad. I feel like Phelps is right where they want to be already
#5
Is this really legit?

Huge get for Phelps! Does this move the needle enough for them to contend???
#8
Is Phelps fairly solid? Heard from a few people they aren’t too bad. Question is, whose spot does Rash take??

I don’t know if it’s enough to contend, but they sure are stacked this year.

Contend for what? Region? If that’s what you mean no. And Pike Central remains the favorite to win district. Stewart is arguably the best player in the region.

Will the move help Phelps? Probably so. But when he comes in it does mean someone who was playing more will have their minutes cut. Will he start? Not sure. That’s for Cameron Smith to figure out. If he does will the kid who’s starting spot he takes be accepting of it? If he doesn’t start will Zade be ok with coming off the bench maybe not playing as much? I hope he does well over there. No matter how talented a player is it is difficult to add someone mid season to a team. I’ve seen it hurt more than it helps before with team chemistry

there is about 100 layers to this between both belfry and phelps

rash is a good player who can be a great player... weddington is as productive of a big as the region has and phelps seemed to click during the wesley game when jamar stewart figured out how dominant he could be....... good luck to figuring out where rash slots in with that and the sky can be the limit
#12
This is huge for Phelps. Phelps gets a shooter/scorer to make them more respectable. A bad Belfry team gets much worse. As far as eligibility, it could be tricky even with a legitimate move. It could be Feburary to get eligible if Belfry fights it.
#13
Rash’s natural position is point guard. FWIW
#14
Rash will most definitely start and be one of their best players assuming he is able to get eligible.

Sources close to the situation are saying that the new coach was just not doing a very good job of fixing the problems that the team had. It also appears that Zades family member by marriage who was on the coaching staff, has also stepped away from the team. Hard to say but in the end Belfry basketball isn’t heading in the right direction. Phelps can benefit greatly if the transition fits in and fills his role in a short time frame.

Cameron Smith is a great coach, Hopefully he finds a role for him.

i just cant expect any coach to fix all of the problems they had in less than 10 games.......

The hornets should be interesting to watch the rest of the season!

Nobody other than Darryl McCoy himself actually thought this team had any chance of making any noise in the region this year. Well maybe him and some parents.
The truth is that these kids just have no sense of how to play man to man defense or rebound. That’s including the Rash kid. Is it prior coaching, development in the youth program, lack of athleticism, etc? Maybe a little of all of it. But defense and rebounding can be improved greatly with an increase in attitude and effort. Maybe not to the point of being great at it but at least being efficient. Throw in a little coaching with some effort and you could see a huge improvement.
As for the Rash kid leaving. Let him go. IMO it looks bad on a kid when they jump ship and leave. No dedication to the program or the kids that worked hard in the off season. It’s the new attitude with kids. I’ll just leave when things don’t go my way. Granted I feel it looks worse on his dad more so than him because it’s very clear this wasn’t all on the kid.
So let him go. Belfry will still struggle and now you’ve gotten rid of a kid that was all in for himself. Zade has talent, it’s clear. But let’s be honest here. He was never going to be the stud that people were making him out to be. He’s slow, he’s not a leaper, he’s a liability on defense like the rest of the team and it’s not like he’s going to be a 6’3” guard that can lead a team to a regional championship on his own.
Belfry should be looking for kids that want to be there, kids not looking to just get their numbers, kids that want to be part of bringing the program back to respectability and kids that don’t listen to daddy when things get a little tough.
A lot of talent still on pond creek and losing one “me above the team” player isn’t going to make or break the next 3 years as they strive to bring the program back.

Agree with most of what you said. Dean and Clarke a few years ago were probably the best backcourt in the region. You couldn’t press Belfry with those 2. Belfry doesn’t have that right now. And those 2 played their tails off. They competed. Little is Belfry’s best player and was before Rash left. Rash didn’t seem to have that dawg mentality that all the great players have. Good player but he won’t make Phelps a region contender. I also think it looks bad on Brett leaving the team mid season looks bad. Makes it look like he was there just for one player. I’m sure he was forced to do that though

I sure think so too.

Maybe two season ago, belfry should of allowed the eighth grade group play up
To high school level instead of worrying about beating up on middle school kids to try and win a state championship.

Getting kids experience is huge. Look at how other teams who have focus on that class are now. They took lumps as younger kids but paying off. (paintsville and JC are perfect examples. ). Kids got experience to figure out what it takes at varsity level and their sophomore class is way ahead of belfry group.

Rash was one of if not top kid in 2027 class in mountains year after year. He can play, just hasn’t adjusted to speed of high school game as quick as keithley, Slone, Cole, and a few others.

To me this is big for the hornets, Rash is one of the most skilled players in the region despite age. The transfer should benefit them huge if coaches play it right. To me Rash is a great scorer but just as good at getting others involved with that being said i like the ball in his hands 65% of their offense
