Yeah, I didn't really understand leaving Akins off the top 15 list in the other thread. He has definitely looked the part of a top 5-10 player in the region thus far. Nice job, Keystone, giving the young frosh some props.
#3
Heard Hubbard and Jordan from Knox didn’t travel with the team to Bath County, was told they quit? If true Hubbard is a HUGE loss.
#4
Hubbard scored five points last night vs Harlan.
Burton and Bargo scored 59 of 81 points last night.
#5
Burton is a stud for KC. He knows how to score. He will have to score 30 for them to win. They barely beat harlan city last night. He had 36. It would be something to see him average 30 as a fresh, albeit on a bad team.

Definitely a stud. He’s grown so much as a player over the last year it’s insane and I expect he will continue. Was sitting here thinking about the freshman class in the 13th and wow. Burton, Mahan and Fuson from Whitley, Akins from Corbin. Can you imagine if you had all them on one team for four years. It’d be insane

Burton has become such an overall leader and player this summer. Hes a heck of a player.

Yea you pretty far off on your top 5 teams it’s south and north then everyone else that’s obvious preseason and still obvious first couple weeks of the season
#9
South has proven they are the best team in region. North isn’t far ahead of everyone else. They are with a couple other teams in the next tier. Its definitely not those two and everyone else. Maybe HC and SL then everyone else. Just not a believer in the northside boys yet.

What constitutes a great player? I mean if you rank a player what do you look at. I would really like to hear a lot of answers on this. Because to me i think most people only see points. With that being said a mediocre player could play on a team that isn't very good and he is given the green light opportunities. He shoots 35 shots makes 10 that's 28 percent and lets say they were all 2pt FG's which is 20pts. But this also will most likely not have another kid on the team with double digit shot attempts.  Is this what is considered a great player? And trust me i have seen this a lot in the 13th region. I'm not directing this at anyone on here I really just want to hear opinions.

I think it has to be someone who is a major component on a team that has a legitimate chance to compete. I know a team like Whitley has a couple nice freshman but I honestly think they play nothing but cupcakes and later get exposed. Nothing against those young men. Just an example. Williamsburg has a kid averaging 25 ppg and so on. My list is subject to change. Some move in, some move out.

1) Jordan Mabe (has proven to be most valuable player to his team which is the best team in the region. His biggest impact may be on defensive end).

2) Maddox Huff (Very talented averaging 35 and 10 Rebs. 10 Rebs is his most impressive stat.)

3) Reece Davidson (Much improved. Around 27ppg and 8 Rebs. Without him I think they struggle to play .500 basketball)

4) Sawyer Thompson (Pineville has best team its had in years. Around 24 ppg 10 Rebs. Once again 10 Rebs is a huge stat.)

5) Ryder Akins (Around 20ppg, 9 Rebs. Super athletic kid. Very unselfish and gets everyone involved. would love to know steals per game)

6) Reggie Cottrell (Makes winning plays all the time. Always guards best player. Unmatched energy)

7) Grayson Burton (will need to average 25-30 for KC to compete)

8) Cameron Hall (most underrated player in region IMO. If he was 3 inches taller he would play college ball)

9) Eli Pietrowski (Hard nosed battler down low. 16ppg, 9 Reb)

10) Ashton Moser (22ppg. Big piece for pineville.)

Ive seen all these guys in person or TV no less than 3 times. Who did I leave out?

Anymore most look strictly at points not overall value to a team. Just because you score 30 but give up 35 or make your team stagnant you are not a great player. Give me the player who touches every box but also plays defense and is a leader. The guy who will give up his shot attempt to get a teammate going. To be honest in recent memory Reed was that guy. There is one right now who checks those boxes but I won’t say the name just yet. One superstar can beat mediocre teams by themselves but it takes a leader to win against competition

I can't think of many players on bad teams being ranked as one of the region's best players. Who fits that category the last decade?
#14
Who checks the boxes? Give us a hint or something!
#15
Micah Engle from Lynn Camp couple yrs ago was one of. I believe the Campers won 5 or 6 games
#16
I think mike maxey lead state in scoring and was 1st or 2nd in state in rebounds in 1990. Really Good player for williamsburg. They won maybe 10 games. Went on to play at cumberlands.

Kid's shooting range was infinity. Saw him many times launch it from 35-40 ft.

I think Maxey graduated in 89. I believe he started on the 87 team that upset Cawood in the semifinals and lost to Clay in the regional finals. That team also had the Cornetts. They were really good for a few years. They dropped off some by 89 but I doubt they won just 10 games. I also don't think he led the state in scoring or rebounding.

He was ranked 9th in the region as a senior - his second senior year if Ii remember correctly. They won 21 games the year before when he had some help.
#19
Sounds crazy but look it up. He did. I could have the year wrong. Timmy Cornett was a crazy athlete. He ended up playing with nick sanford at LMU. His brother James played at Sue Bennett. Mike maxey set the 3 point record at cumberlands before brad gover broke it.
#20
He was a good player. I don't remember him being the top ranked player in the region or an all-stater though. I guess he could have still led the state in scoring without either of those. He was player of the year for Wburg in 89. Someone else was in 90, so he couldn't have still been there at that point.
#21
He probably wasn’t an all-stater. Just a high volume scorer on a mediocre team. Year probably was 89

You’re telling your age now lol. The one on those Burg teams that didn’t get any pub but was a great defender and PG was Michael berry. And Sanford was a full grown man. Tim Cornett was an athlete and James was the shooter. Guy from OBI Ben Franklin couple of years before was a badddd man. Maxey was solid

Just didn’t play a lick of defense. Best player from the Camp IMO was Ronnie Garland. Played O and D

Yea north deff has the 2 best wins in the region beating top 3 team in the 11th region Henery clay and a front runner in the 6th region j town north is a better team then Harlan co and the rest of the region like it or love it, north and south are heads and shoulders above everyone else they have to 2 best players in the region when you look at their efficiency both shooting above 50 percent Davidson shooting 45 from 3

Huff from Harlan co is 6-29 from 3 in his last 4 games and shooting 34 percent from the 3 point line on the season, that’s not going to cut it when you play quality teams in the Wymt mountain classic, the big dude #54 was having his way with clay co they had no answer for him he had a team high 16 points on 7-9 shooting but huff let clay stay in the game forcing shots 3-12 and 0-4 from 3 sometimes it’s not your not and you have to recognize that and feed the hot hand

Ben Franklin was probably best I've ever seen at OBI. He was class of 80 and was an all-stater. I saw Franklin and Phil Cox both score around 50 in a game at Cawood in the 80 season. OBI had some good teams in those years.

J-town was highly ranked early. But lost 3 of their best players. The best one went to Huntington Prep. So their ranking is a little misinformative as they weren't actually the ranked team NL played. I do believe NL is a better team than most give credit.

Phil Cox was a bad man…Nick Sanford was a bad, bad man. Just imagine how many points Cox would have scored had there been a 3 pt line back then!

Interesting how many people want to take shots at Maddox Huff this season.
He was second team all-state last year in the Herald Leader and third team all state in the Courier Journal as a junior. He helped HC win three state tournament games. He has already committed to a Division I school.
Not too many 13th Region players have marked all those boxes in the last 30 years or so.

Yep, I've thought about that.

Phil was something. I think it's reasonable to say that Phil might very well have averaged 6-8 points more per game with the three point shot. And that might be conservative. Over 120 or so game career, he might have scored another 1,000 pts , or so. Another thousand added to his 2,400 points that he scored  would put him among the top five or six scorers all time. And , again, that might be a conservative estimate.

Btw, Phil was the career points leader at Vandy at the time his career ended(I think he's still top 5) and he had no three-point shot in college, either.  Can you imagine what his career numbers at Vandy would have been with the three-pointer? Btw, Phil's first college game as a freshman--- scored  30 points and beat Duke at  Duke.  Not too shabby.

The most prolific scorer that I ever saw play was Ervin "Magic" Stepp of Phelps. What a scoring machine!!! Ervin never saw a shot he didn't like. Dude averaged almost 54 ppg the year I graduated high school. Think about that--- he AVERAGED almost 54 a game.
