Great Crossing 58 Lexington Catholic 50
#1
Final from Frankfort on 1/27/24.

Two of the top teams in the 11th and state.

I'll add some additional thoughts shortly.

Watched this one. Know Catholic was without all of their pieces. Both of these teams have essentially the same squads back from last season, with the Knights losing Reece Potter. Great Crossing looked better than I'd remembered seeing them at the end of last season-- I don't think that's me being a prisoner of the moment either. Moreno has a chance to be a pro.

Warhawks had 4-5 dunks in the first quarter and looked like they were on the cusp of busting the game open. They ended up leading 17-8 after Q1. Catholic cut back into the lead fairly quickly in the second-- made GC take shots that I'm guessing weren't drawn up or their first read offensively.

Lex Cath didn't have as much trouble finishing on our around Moreno early as I'd have anticipated. The stepback that Harward made with Moreno closing out (on the possession right after he'd blocked one of his shots) to cut the lead to 3 was huge. GC went away from Moreno too much in the 2nd. GC might have been saved by the bell at the half. Catholic hit a deep three to take a 1 point lead with ~1:40 left, GC turned it over immediately after & LC converted a deep triple. Lots of turnovers both ways in Q2 and the 'Hawks finished with 8 points (with 3 coming on a trey in the last minute).

Lex Cath pushed it out to 6 quickly in the 3rd. GC had some decent counters and got better looks playing off Moreno. Impressed by how well LC's kids stuck to their rules in the zone-- you could tell that they had a lot of different assignments according to the player and situation, but they adhered to it well. LC would stretch their lead to as many as 9. Moreno hit four straight free throws to cut back into it. 43-39, Lex Cath after 3.

Catholic had a chance to put it away early in the 4th that seemed to slip through their fingertips. Like what GC was able to do with #11 making shots. There were a few threes he made, including one just after LC missed a knockout punch, that were huge-- if you were keeping track of the win probability for either team based on score, those were probably some of the biggest swings in the game. Kept thinking early that GC would be much more dangerous with a shooter playing on the same side as (or at least off of) Moreno and he was the difference late. GC was able to reestablish Moreno late in the 4th. Retook the lead on an and-one with about 3 minutes to go. LC's contingent didn't seem happy with the call that Moreno got with around 2:28 left, but it looked like the right one. Game was 51-50 with 2:22 remaining, and Lex Cath was scoreless from there. Still a one possession game with just over 20 seconds remaining. Don't think Doyle scored in the 4th.

A shame that both these teams won't have a shot to compete for a state title at Rupp
