Betsy Layne vs. Magoffin 01/25/24
#1
Betsy Layne will get their shot at another region contender tonight.  What defense do they try to stop Barnett.  I don't think they have anyone that can matchup man to man.  Very few teams locally do.  Will Betsy Layne try something different finally?  Looking at stats, they have some three point shooters right at 50% or more.  Will they run anything to get them involved?  Personally, I would love to see Allen get an extended look tonight.  I don't think he has been getting near the minutes he should.  Heck, he's shooting 60%+ from threes this year. Why not see what they can do before the big district game Saturday?

I predict Magoffin wins this one 72-65.  BL will just run too small of a lineup to win.

Allen has shot 13 threes, less than 1 attempt per game. Hot start yes, but there’s a reason he’s so open. Maybe he needs to take more? Allen is just taking good 3’s, because he knows what his ability is from outside.

Other has shot only 24 threes, less than 2 per game. Knows his limits.

Not disagreeing although, they should play 8. 2 Hall’s and Allen. That’s it.

Easy to take one aspect of a game and pick/choose.

They’re 8-7. Maybe one should reflect on who’s been in the game on their momentum changes and to close the wins out, since it looks like 50% of the time they lose??

Taking good shots is a good thing. The senior Hall looks pretty good shooting the ball from what I've seen. One of the best pure shooters around. His form looks dead on in warmups. I think the reason he only shoots a couple per game is that he's gets stuck in the corner and no one passes the ball there. I don't think he has any limits other than he is a catch and shoot that won't get a chance to create. He has been wide open many times in the games I've watched, only to see ball go the other way. The best thing they could do is put him in one corner and B. Hall in the other and let the drive and kick find them when they are open. They do plenty of driving, but zero kicking. I've seen the coach yell at players for shooting too many threes and then he will turn around and yell at them for driving the ball. Has to be confusing for players like Parsons and T Hall. I've watched less than half of their games, so I must be missing something cause what I see doesn't make sense.

I agree. They have the talent, they just don’t have the cohesiveness for whatever reason. Seems like A. Kidd would have more space to operate, if you surrounded him with shooting more often than not.

From the games I’ve seen on WPRG lately. Parsons, Pente, the 2 Hall’s and Kidd seem to be the best lineup in totality. 4 shooters, your best player, good TEAM defenders, etc. With a blend of Tanner Hall and Allen in with that.

Very dangerous few games coming up for Bobcats, in danger of being 4th in their district. Still time to right the ship. Looking forward to the matchup with my Wildcats later in the season.

Mullins Tiger man here. Just never could get onboard with Pike Central.

Any update on the game tonight

Magoffin wins by about 13. Betsy Layne was ice cold from the perimeter all night and Barnett was his usual self.

My thought on Betsy Layne is they need to shrink their rotation. Watching them in the All A regional tournament, they played a lot of kids. Seems like it’s hard to develop any kind of rhythm. They do like to press and play fast so I understand guys need breaks but seems like they are trying to play too many.

I think Betsy Layne made a mistake in selecting the coach. Mason Hall should have gotten that job.

He'll get it and whoever gets him will also get his son who will be a good player someday.

Kudos to Howard for asking Mason to be an assistant. Also shows the character Mason has, taking an assistant job when he deserved the head coaches spot. He just loves to coach and loves the game and most importantly, is in it for all of the kids. Whoever has a vacancy this off-season should call him first.

On a semi related note, what exactly happened with Derrick Newsome? I thought the parents really wanted him and was so happy to get him. I thought he would have been there for at least 10 years.

Parents wanted Derrick and then parents wanted Derrick gone after he won 3 district titles in 4 years.  Betsy Layne to a tee

2 in 3 years. See your point although!

But, BL also got alittle help from the Covid year, otherwise they wouldn’t have had Frazier and Howell for the 2nd title and wouldn’t have had Robinson last season in the runner-up year, without Robinson last year they’re the 4 seed. May have not won the 2nd one anyway, had Lawrence County’s second leading scorer not broke his ankle mid-season. General public seems to forget all that^^^

First year Newsome took over a 17 win team who returned everyone including the starting PG who didn’t play in the 17 win season.

I’m glad they didn’t hire him here at SV.

Pikeville had Sammons held back and Worrix and got a transfer in Worrix who made their team what it was.  So any one can play the semantics game.

Region wide yes, District wide they cannot for his tenure at BL. No one benefited more district wide than BL.

This year FC should win the district. As they had multiple use the Covid year back then as underclassmen.

Being able to get held back in HS isn’t allowed, very fortunate circumstances.

BL also got Frasure an extra year.  Robinson and Mims as well.  Yeah Semantics.

So the year Pikeville had Worrix.  Frasure and Howell were covid seniors and Robison and Mims were covid juniors.  Newsome got an extra two years basically with that core.

Point I was trying to prove is Newsome may not have one of those district titles if it wasn’t for covid. So with all the talent he did have thanks to covid it was kind of underwhelming. Problem is at Bl the parents are never happy and some worry about individual success ahead of team success. Need to pick a coach and give him 4 or 5 years to change to culture.

All I know is, I've watched these boys for years as I've moved from Pike County over the Floyd line. I wish them the best. The coaching situation at most local schools is political, but this new coach needs a chance. I think he's still learning what some players can do. He needs to limit meaningful minutes to 7 now as I noticed Allen no longer with team (darn shame-kid could start at a lot of places). I would change the first five, but I'm not there everyday to know the reasons why it is this way. Maybe afraid some more will quit if they go to the bench? Anyway, good luck Bobcats.
#20
I agree. They do need to stick with A coach and roll with it. Short was giving what 3 years and the same with Newsome. BL needs to support the hires they make instead of listening to parents all the time. Floyd County in general could be more supportive of their sports programs like Johnson County schools and Pikeville. Give Howard 4 or so years. If they don’t think he’s the man for the job then why hire him anyways. Outside noise needs to stop and he needs to quit worrying about getting fired and just play to win.

sounds like poor old BL will never change a group of 4 or 5 always trying to run show and hide behind the doors and some are on the bench which doesn't make any sense and posting this stuff. WHen was the last time any Floyd County School won anything ?  Just stating the facts

Girls side FC has been successful recently.

On the boys side, FC won the district a few years ago, BL won 2 recently. I know the district is Floyd county schools and LC, but LC has won a few in last 5-6 years.

BL Boys was in region semi’s 2 years in a row and All A finals one year recently.

BL won a couple all A’s Mid 2010’s. Also won an All A State less than 15 years ago.

Facts are often misinterpreted with emotions and feelings.

14 Betsy Layne went to the All A state tournament and went to the final 4
11 Betsy Layne won the All A State Championship

Sadly I think that was it even girls basketball as well.
