Those in the Corbin and Tri-County area are , no doubt, familiar with this news but I'm sure many others are not. An eight year-old child was killed on Monday evening while playing basketball at his home. The goal structure collapsed and fell on top of him. The young man passed away sometime later at UK hospital. Those who knew the youngster, including those who coached his baseball and basketball teams, said he was just a delightful little boy, always eager to learn , well-mannered, very coachable, and played with a lot of enthusiasm and passion. One of his baseball coaches said that after this tragedy occurred he cried all night long and all morning. It's just heartbreaking.
These kind of tragedies involving young children just devastate me and I don't deal with them very well. Sometimes just writing about it and telling others helps a little. The young man's name is Eli Hill. I simply cannot imagine what the youngsters parents are going through. Spend a few minutes today thinking about this family and squeeze your little ones a little tighter than usual before you send them off to bed.
Thank you.

Since first posting this I became aware that the young boy who passed away played basketball and soccer in a sports league run by one of the churches here in town. The league is going to retire his two jersey numbers(soccer and basketball). They will be framed and displayed in the gym at the church where Eli played.
As we think about and remember this sweet little boy, I wonder how often a tragic occurrence like this with a basketball goal takes place? Has anyone ever heard of it happening? I don't know whether it was a regular sized goal or one of the smaller ones. I know some of the structures can move around. I can see where they could tip over. However, it sounds like in this case, the goal structure itself collapsed and fell on top of the child.
