There’s very little difference in these two teams. In two championship games in back to back years there’s only 3 points separating them.

Just an outstanding accomplishment from Warren Central. What a season to finish 35-1 and win the state title. GRC has a great basketball team as well.

One other fact the final 4 today was the first time since 1922 that 3 of the 4 teams were from Central Kentucky.

When was the last time that a final was repeated in back to back years? The last one that immediately comes to mind is Clay County and Ballard in 1987 and 1988. Before tonight, I don't know if it'd been done since then though.

I was thinking the same thing. I can’t recall any other time that’s happened since the Clay Co-Ballard games. It’s rare enough for one team to play in the championship game two straight years. I think Seneca won it in ‘63 and ‘64 and Fairdale did the same in ‘90 and ‘91, but to have the same two teams squaring off is a rarity.

Back when I was just a young pup instead of an Old Hound,   Lexington beat Somerset in back-to-back years(1918 and 1919) and Maysville and Brewers met in back-back years(1947 and '48), with each team winning one.

I thought that there were a few turning points in the first half. Warren Central shoots GRC out of their 2-3 zone midway through the second quarter and Villafuerte hitting his heave from three to end the half were two of the major ones. During each of those GRC was making some small runs and seemed to be gaining momentum, and the three to end the half seemed especially deflating.

In the third quarter, Unseld's run of 8 straight points (two threes and a two) gave you the feeling that it was going to be Warren Central's night. I know he had a run of 10, but I think it was the eighth point that put them up by about 15. Credit to GRC for being able to cut into the lead-- they were as close as 2 late and were able to cut it to 4 a few times very early in the fourth. After that they'd cut it to three and had possession at around the 6:30 and 3:30 marks, so it wasn't as if they didn't have some chances at sealing an epic comeback.

Morton didn't have his best game, at least early on, and I wondered how much the gauntlet that they'd been through had to do with what appeared to be tired legs. I also wonder if GRC would try featuring Edwards in more of what they were trying to do if they had it to do over, but hindsight is always 20/20 and I'm guessing they weren't counting on Central shooting lights out from three either.
