RU- KCC (Lost a lot of experience, will take a step back I think)
Regional Champ- LCC, PCC, or Wolfe
LCC is probably the favorite getting to host the regional tournament.

but….
Owsley hasn’t made a district final in like 30 years. Having a hard time seeing that one.
also Hazard literally beat Perry in district last year and ended up winning district and Region.

My apologies, I thought this was the softball forum. Lol No question Hazard is the favorite in baseball until someone beats them.

53rd
Champ- Letcher
Runner up- Knott
LCC returns some key players and added Coach Dean so they will be really good.
54th
Champ- Hazard
Runner up- Perry
Hazard is always good and Perry will be down some I think.
55th
Champ- Wolfe
Runner up- Breathitt
Wolfe had Breathitt in the District Championship before the rain delay last season and will be much much better this year. Look out for these kids they are really good and the region will run through Campton the next couple of years.
56th
Champ- Powell
Runner up- Estill
Powell returns some keys guys and beat Estill for the championship last season so I think they will do it again this season.
Region Champ - Hazard ( To be the best you gotta beat the best and Hazard is still king of the mountain top until proven otherwise.)

I do think this may be a year hazard has some competition
03-12-2023, 08:18 PM
Hazard has had competition in most years, they just always find a way to win. Some of the region championships they won were as the underdog. This may be the better of the Hazard teams coming into the season but it will not be a cakewalk. Never is!

Seems there are some chinks in Hazard's armor after the game in Powell last night. Could be an interesting year for them with a strong Wolfe, Letcher, Estill, and apparently Powell.

Doesn’t show chinks in Hazards armor. I’ve been telling everyone about the freshman pitcher from Powell. Gonna be a real problem for teams in the 14th for 4 more years. 5 inning, 3 earned runs 5 k’s and 1 walk, gave up 5 hits but 3 of those came in the 5th…gotta get that arm conditioned to last longer. All in his very first high school start against the defending region champs.

Well I think Hazard is still the team to beat. Meehan is the best there is in the region. Powell has some talent in that freshman class and their travel ball program has been pretty solid over the years with Begley, King, and Napier. Those guys have really been instrumental in the development of those players and players from several other counties.

Add Jett and Shepherd to the list of travel ball coaches. I believe they got that freshman group started. Travel ball has been huge for Powell County's baseball program.

That's how Wolfe got to where they are. Those boys have been together since the coach pitch days with Oliver, Wilson, Whisman, Hollon, and McWhorter coaching them. Wilson branched off and went with Begley at Powell and they started EKBC and had kids all throughout the 14th region ( Powell, Wolfe, Knott, Perry and Breathitt) and won tournaments all over the place and McWhorter/Whisman/Hollon coached the Mudcats with all Wolfe county kids and they were really really good as well. Travel Ball is the key to developing in my opinion

I didn’t even know Powell still had a baseball program. Thought all they played was basketball.

Bryan Dean being back in town at Letcher Central will be a factor in regional competitiveness for sure. He brings a ton of coaching experience and was one heck of a player as well back in his day. Played for EKU as a pitcher. His Cougars are already 5-0 in this young season and have two wins over Knott Central and one over Hazard.

I'd agree with Hazard and Letcher being at the top right of the mountain right now but to say Breathitt after that is probably a stretch. Wolfe had Breathitt beat in the district championship and was clearly the better team and Breathitt better thank the big man upstairs for the rain out and Combs for the homerun or Breathitt was toast. Wolfe is much better this season. Powell is also better than Estill and beat them in the district championship last season as well. Can't always rank teams because your a fan and your team can't beat them.

Why does that matter? Wolfe started about seven 8th graders a 9th grader and a 10th grader and give them all they wanted last year and are much much improved. If Combs aint hitting who does Breathitt got that is going to beat you?
03-22-2023, 04:46 PM
You keep bringing up last year's district game. How Wolfe had Breathitt beat before the rain came. Just wondering if that was the only time they played last season?
03-22-2023, 05:16 PM
Combs will be throwing about 90 this year and Wolfe will be lucky to put a bat on it. And that’s no disrespect to Wolfe. Expect big things from Combs this year. Issac Bellamy is bulked up and looks really good too. I think he will hit some Homeruns this year.

Those travel kids see high mid 80s. Bellamy can play no doubt not taking anything away from him.

I am a Breathitt fan. Didn’t rate them that high. I figure top 3-5 or so this season.
You must be a Wolfe fan (assistant coach lol). You seemed to have brought up “the rain delay” 2-3 times.
I was just wondering how Wolfe did against Breathitt the other times they played last season.

By seeing Combs in basketball, he’s added 20# of muscle since last year. I’d say he will hit 90 this season. And sit around 87-88. Could be POY in the 14th.
