Hazard 65 — Perry Central 62 (54th District)
#1
Hazard took their first lead with 5 seconds to go in the game and ends Perry’s season on their own court. Abby Maggard unofficially with 37 I think. What a game!!
#2
Nice win for Hazard, maggard put them on her back
#3
Maggard pulled up with about 45 seconds left from about 15 feet behind the 3pt line and knocked it down to tie the game. One of the biggest shots I’ve ever seen.
#4
Hazard shown a lot heart and toughness. Never gave up. Got down double digits in both halves but still pulled out the win. Another disappointing post season for the commodores
#5
That’s 2 straight years I thought Perry Central would win the 54th and 2 straight years I have been wrong. Last year they got beat pretty bad in the finals and this year they go out in the first round while being the top rated team in the region for a lot of the year according to the RPI.
#6
Going in Hazard had 1 girl averaging double digit points and you end up letting HER score 37 points to beat you?!?! Wow

Got to sit back and say I agree. Very disappointing season for them. Think she went for 40 last time. Duh, she can shoot.
#8
Hazard got it done with senior Maggard and the middle school team. They have a very nice nucleus of young players on their team.
#9
Hazard has some decent young girls but Maggard does it all for them. Next year the game will get a lot more difficult for all them without Maggard. Maggard refused to give it up in the 4th and Perry missed a bunch of key FT’s in the 4th. Hats off to Hazard for not quitting down 8 with 4 to go.
#10
Perry’s tough schedule that we heard about all season really helped them pull through in the end Smile

All jokes aside, great game and congrats to Hazard.

Heck of a job by Hazard and their coaching staff. They didn’t quit! Props to them

My thing is… How does Buckhorn hold Maggard to only 10 points 2 weeks ago but Perry lets her drop 37 and beat them? I’m not taking anything away from her because she is a STUD and creates shots but Perry should have been able to contain her more than they did. Hats off to the Bulldogs for not giving up and fighting until the end.

Just a phenomenal effort by Maggard and the rest of the Bulldogs chipped in and got the job done.
The venue really felt like a Hazard home game. Bulldog fans made their presence felt down the stretch.

Buckhorn ran out of gas against Leslie in the second half but led the entire first half.
It wasn't out of the realm of possibility to see a Buckhorn/Hazard 54th Championship game.

WIN OR GO HOME BASKETBALL. You just never know.

Both Buckhorn and Hazard got their teams to play at a different level. Blank and Howard are two of the better coaches who gets the most out of their teams regardless of the obstacles they are in. Unfortunately for Buckhorn they ran out of gas as you said. Can't sleep on this Hazard team. They have now beaten Leslie and Perry.

Perry did play the toughest schedule in the Region easily. May of prepared them physically I guess a little but there’s nothing you can do when there isn’t any mental toughness. Missed a ton of free throws down the stretch and fired up shots when they didn’t need to shoot anything but wide open layups. They missed a wide open one at the end of the game as well. Mental Toughness lost those kids the game. Lost composure. And I do know for a fact that Perry could not schedule games with Cordia, JBS, Lee, Leslie, Breathitt. and several of his the local small schools. Not like they wanted to play that tuff of a schedule.

As for guarding Maggard, I’m with you on that one. Looked like they chased Maggard the whole game but NOBODY could stay in front of her or contest her 3s. Idk. Was hoping Perry would have won but hats off to Todd Howard, you can tell he had them ready.
#16
They could have very well played the toughest schedule….. that is not saying a lot when compared to other schedules in the district.

Once again I’ll add, it looks like their tough schedule paid off for them.
#17
Once again smart ass, apparently it didn’t.

And again if you can comprehend English, nobody around here would play them. Even Leslie refused to play. Usually tough schedules do pay off but teams have let downs at times. Apparently the this was one of them times.

Teams must challenge themselves. With that said not every team can play the same type of schedule. Take Perry and Hazard as examples. On paper Perry has the tougher schedule. However, Hazard's was tough for their team coming in. Both had them prepared for the post season. The end goal is the same for everyone, just different how they get to that goal.

I’d say you’re right. Struck a nerve. Probably got some personal ties to the program if I was guessing.

I do Rookie. Your right.
#22
I meant no disrespect. Only poking fun at how I’ve read all season that LCs schedule is weak (and it was) but I’ve also heard that PCCs schedule is preparing them for a post season run.

Generally I agree, playing a tougher schedule will better prepare a team for the post season.

Striking nerves is a specialty of mine.

Isn’t he the guy who they picked Mclarnis over last time the job was open?
#26
Didn’t Brashear coach the Hazard girls team a few years ago?

Yea maybe 6-7 years ago

Is Mcalarnis out the door? I’ve heard that rumor around town but the rumor mills love to run this time of year.
#29
Not heard anything official Griffman. Rumor is her and Hoskins are out the door. Heard baseball and softball coaches may be in hot seat as well. Wonder if Football Coaches are in jeopardy since they haven’t won a district game since they have been here? May be a bigger overall problem with sports in Perry County besides the high school coaches. Idk any answers but you hear the rumors every year especially when you lose first round of the district.
#30
I’ve heard every bit of that, plus Dixon. Of course when Jett went out, the rumor was a trickle down effect was going to happen and things were changing. Working in downtown Hazard, there’s a new rumor daily. Lol. Who knows what will actually happen though, I guess only time will tell.
