Mercer County
#1
Anyone heard anything about mercer county????

It's awful quite over there. Who have they scrimmage and results.
#3
They got beat in a scrimmage against East Jessamine last week.

They struggled against Dunbar in a scrimmage Friday. Losing 20-7 with the varsity playing 3 quarters. They will be a work in progress this year on offense. Defense will have to keep them in games as they figure out their strengths on the offensive side.

Heard they were not good at all. Small and young.

Mercer's offense has struggled in the 1st two scrimmages.  Thaddeus Mays is starting QB and probably best ATH.  Problem is he is only about 5'8 and seems to have trouble in the pocket getting passing tipped or seeing the field with his size.  He can be a threat outside the pocket running the ball.  I know he has never played QB in High School and maybe not since little league and was probably their best WR last year.  Morgan Pennington has looked good at RB and LB.  At receiver they have Jackson Perry who is legit 6'4 basketball player but only his 2nd year of playing football.  Ashton Drakeford is a 6'2 freshmen receiver/Safety and had their only TD in the scrimmage along with an INT.  Drakeford has never played WR always been at QB through middle school.  Perry and Drakeford caught 4 of their 5 completed passes against Dunbar and can be mismatches for most high school corners that are mostly shorter than 6'.  Defensive line looked good against Dunbar.  Zeydan Jackson is a big athletic DE that should have a good season.  Neither team could put together long drives but hurt Mercer with big plays.  Mercer in the right spots but missing tackles.

Craig Yeast faces a tall task.  Most of the time when a new coach takes over it is from a struggling program where previous coach struggled or wasn't liked.  That is not the case here.  David Buchanan was very well liked by the players, parents and community.  Mercer was a top 10 team in 3A over the last 3-4 years only losing a few regular season games per year during that time to CAL/Boyle.  They lost a big senior class last year and majority of skill players.  That is not an excuse for this team.  There has been several years where Mercer lost a lot of skill guys and kept rolling the next year.  They have the players/talent to be a decent team.  With that said i would not be surprised by a 5-5 season which would be a huge step backwards from where they have been over the last several years.  The talent is there to be better than 5-5 but they need to get better than what they have looked like in the scrimmages so far.

They probably shouldn't have fired a really good head coach.

If true then a huge mistake by the administration.  As you know players, parents and fans are not asked their opinion when something like this goes down.  I would say that Buchanan had an approval rating of 80% or higher from  the players, parents & community.   Not sure if it is well known outside of Mercer County but Craig Yeast is related to the AD and assistant principal at Mercer County. Superintendent was in his 1st year when Buchanan left.  If Buchanan was forced out it was a very bold move to force out a well liked and successful coach in year 1 by the Superintendent.  I hope 3 months from now i am completely wrong and Mercer wins 8-9 games like they have the last few years.

Coach Buchanan was not fired or even encouraged to look elsewhere. His son graduated, he's been coaching for years and I think just needed a reset. He's not coaching this season but has stated he intends to coach again. Mercer will have to work hard this year. Their defense is pretty good. It will have to keep them in games until they find their offensive identity. QB is an athlete and play maker but not really a true QB.

Coach Buchanan is a great man and a great coach.

Anyone would be lucky to have him.
