What would the playoffs look like?
#1
What would the playoffs look like if the KHSAA wasn't afraid of their own RPI system and seeded east and west in each class instead of the unpopular district play of the first two rounds? While I didn't fill these out if I did I would ignore the regional and semifinal reseeding nonsense and go straight East vs West in the final.

I decided to find out just that. Keeping only teams that made the playoffs and seeding them 1-16 on east and west. 6A is a little weird due to 17 west teams and 15 east. I also seeded using true RPI and did not account for travel. Below is how the playoffs would look.

Would many of the outcomes change? Is the first round any more competitive?

Not sure why, maybe whatever you are viewing the thread on doesn't like the images linked from my website.

The 2a championship game would really be the semifinals of the west side. The Kroger field game would be a bloodbath

Mercer would take the 3A Bracket every day of the week and twice on Sunday as opposed to what we have now.

This would be..... AWESOME imo!

In my opinion, this is spot-on. I'm a big proponent of east-west for the championship. As I've pointed out before, it won't always yield the two best teams in the title game. I'm OK with that. Happens in the Sweet Sixteen virtually every year. Half-state travel isn't that bad, so if some form of RPI (current or modified) is used to get to this format, I'm good with it.

There was nothing more goofy a couple of years ago than having Thomas Nelson go to Belfry in the first round, then Waggener travel to Belfry in round two, then Belfry out to Central in round three. Just lunacy. And I'm sure there were other examples.

I much prefer east-west under any scenario so that the entire state is involved. This is high school after all, not major college or pro. Kansas City/St. Louis was a pretty great World Series for the country, but a Paintsville/Pikeville matchup (just selecting two teams from the same geographical area as an example only) doesn't leave the western side a "home" team to root for.

The only thing I would like to see is better representation for out of state opponents, using the current model things like Russell at 3 and Ashland at 4 because of the bad RPI weight given to out of state

I like it other than the Semi’s. Do what are doing now and re-seed the Semi’s.

Lots of old 1vs4 blowouts to be had in this format in the first round. However there are also some interesting matchups as well.

I don’t think you can eliminate the blowouts unless you got back to the ‘87-‘90 format of only 2 teams making the playoffs from each district

I like what I see here, this would be a great way to go.

Your East West bracket is better then the current system for sure. I would love to see the RPI fixed then seed the Top 32 teams in each class rankimg them from 1-32. 1 plays 32 and down the line 2 plays 31 etc etc. No East West just get it as balanced as possible and let it play out. Higher seed get home field advantage. Personally would like playoffs cut down from 32 too 16. Top 2 teams in the District get in the rest go home. Then you could have an 11 game regular season again.
#18
Remember none of the teams were able to schedule for the RPI this year. Will be interesting to see in the next cycle what this would look like.
#19
Bump!!! All of these First round blowout loses are very unnecessary. Top 2 teams in each district should be all that make the playoffs.
#20
So, by this system, Boyle and Johnson Central would meet in the State Semi-Finals if they both won out. Not the Finals.

Nothing vs the other side of the bracket but why would you want the 2 best teams playing short of the State Finals?

A lot of money spent for travel... first two rounds..
