Mayfield @ Walton Verona (2A Semi)
#1
What's everyone's thoughts on this upcoming match up?

To me, the biggest concern for Mayfield is the long 7 hour haul that could take a little tow on there legs, especially early. I expect Coach Morris and staff will put there kids in the best position possible to minimize that factor, as this is not there 1st rodeo prepping for long road trips. So, in saying that, I just think they're too explosive and athletic for WV to pull the upset. I could see this being competitive for a half, then the Cards taking over in the 2nd half..

My prediction : Mayfield 42 Walton Verona 14

Running clock early in third quarter.
#3
Semi final games should be at neutral sites that logistically fit both teams, 7 hour drive for an in state game is stupid.
#4
Actually had some in Mayfield wishing W-V would win. They wanted the long bus ride with an overnight stay.
#5
Mayfield made the Beechwood trip a few times with absolutely zero hangover. Great season for WV, but they are biting off more than they can chew here. Mayfield kicks in the running clock just before half and takes this one something like 50-6. JV should see several minutes in this one. Biggest debate for me is to make the long, long drive for about an hour of meaningful football, with another long trip the following weekend.

This will be about a 4.5 hour drive one way. Mayfield has done it several times against Beechwood and a few times to Louisville. Glasgow would have been a 3 hour drive.

I hear WV has a nice defense and has done a great job this season but I'm not sure they have faced a team with the amount of weapons Mayfield has. I will be surprised if there is not a running clock at some point.

Mayfield by 30. Only Cal stands between Mayfield and another state championship.
#8
Shocked WV won, mad about the drive distance Fri, happy to still be playing regardless of where and lstly optimistic about our chances of advancing. Whew that is alot of different emotions all at once
#9
I know nothing about WV at all other than seeing their schedule. Who can bring me up to par on WV?

Picked up just a very few tidbits from listening to the Glasgow /WV game on the radio last night.
WV has one player that has twice as many tackles as anyone else on the team. They will prefer to grind it out, as oppose to throwing. They average only like 50 yards passing a game, but added a little passing to the game against Glasgow, which played a big part in their comeback victory over the Scotties.

I saw a video from last season and it looked like they ran a little winged t. It really comes down to if they have a good line. If they are below average they have no chance.

I've said for years the semi-finals should be held in Bowling Green and Lexington or Richmond with the state finals in Louisville.
#13
No idea won what WV has, I was surprised they bear Glasgow. I’ll take my cardinals.
#14
Uh oh Mayfield could be in for a close one :worthy:

Mayfield 56
Walton-Verona 07

Can anybody from Walton help me with a speeding ticket I got two week ago coming back home from Belterra Casino :HitWall:

So Bearcats came from behind to score 2 TDs with about 6 minutes left in the game to win if my info is correct. Two weeks in a row Mayfield will play a team that came from behind to win. Better not try that against this Mayfield team. No cruz control here the offense is like a top fuel dragster, hammer down start to finish. While defense has little different approach with least see what you got then we will shut it down. I will take the Cardinals 45 to 13.
Any info on their stadium seating? Only one side or stands behind vistors side? Grass or turf?
#18
One side seating from what I have seen and turf. Like Mayfield, I don't think the school is with the stadium, but I could be wrong about this. Also, like Mayfield, the stadium is right off the interstate.

Facts about Walton-Verona. I am a 1980 graduate from Caldwell Co and now live here in Verona. About a 5 1/2 to 6 hour drive from Mayfield. Stadium is right off the exit off I-71. Exit right, go past Marathon gas station and Dollar store. A left turn a few yards farther put you to the entrance drive into complex. Very nice field and complex. Field turf. Lighting is Musco lighting which is good and even. Only one set of metal bleachers on pressbox side of field, which the visiting team is assigned to. Not a lot of seating, so better get there early. No places to eat at exit. Best opportunity for food is in Louisville as you come up or at Carrollton, fast food places, about 30 mins southwest of WV. School is not at stadium.

Several epic mismatches in the semi-finals, and this one might be the epickest:

Mayfield - 49
WVHS - 6

I believe Mayfield has played in 17 0f the last 20 state Semi finals and if they make the finals this will be 9 out the last 10 times that they have played for a State Title.

Walton-Verona football field. Approx. 1200 seats

Thanks Troy, was there a small portable metal bleacher on the visitor side? I hope u make the game and help support your fellow Westerners
#25
Varsity Football Class 2A state semi finals set: Mayfield at Walton-Verona 7:00 on 11/23! Again 7:00 kickoff to accommodate Mayfield’s travel arrangements.
#26
No,.. Bleachers only on one side of field. I will be there. I live only a mile from the field. Now, I will have to wear my Caldwell Co football sweatshirt, so please don't hold that against me, LOL
#27
Walton has had a great season, and should be proud of their accomplishments. Beating Glasgow was a huge win for their program, but Glasgow is not Mayfield. Mayfield is a different animal, and this game will be over by halftime.
#28
Agree with most posts here, Walton-Verona is a good team but not a power. Above average defense, a grinding style of offense, run mostly, do not throw very often. Mayfield has way too many weapons, running clock in first half, should win by 4 or more TDs. Keep buses running, drive home safely.

"Only one set of metal bleachers on pressbox side of field, which the visiting team is assigned to." From Troy's statement we be behind our team.

Thanks, I thought I saw a metal portable set off to the side they might use but I am not sure that was what it even was and no telling how old the google air view is. I would expect you to wear the Caldwell Co gear and with great pride. You guys have a great program
