Butler 79 Arkansas 62
#1
Butler's Kelan Martin and Kamar Baldwin combined for 51 points as the Bulldogs posted a 79-62 win in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon. The game was played at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

The Bulldogs had a commanding 45-25 advantage on the glass and led for more than 38 minutes in the contest.

Butler is now 11-1 in its last 12 NCAA Tournament first-round games. The tenth-seeded Bulldogs (21-13) advance to play No. 2 seed Purdue Sunday in the Round of 32.

"It was all about response, and really proud of our seniors for stepping up, owning our huddles and making plays when we needed them. So we just talked about survive and advance. That's the nature of March. We knew it was going to be a 40-minute game," said Butler head coach LaVall Jordan, who picked up his first NCAA Tournament win as a head coach.

Martin scored 27 points to go over 2,000 for his Butler career. He went 9-of-16 from the field, including five three-pointers.

Baldwin had 24 points. He was one of three Bulldogs with nine rebounds, joining Martin and senior Tyler Wideman. Baldwin also had five assists.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a 21-2 run behind 8-of-11 shooting. Arkansas climbed all the way back behind a 16-0 run that gave Arkansas its only lead of the game at 29-27 with 3:48 to play in the first half. Butler closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 36-31 halftime lead they would never relinquish.

A Jaylen Barford lay-up with 8:07 to play pulled the Razorbacks within five at 56-51. Baldwin scored six of the next eight for Butler and the Bulldogs took a 64-53 lead.

Sean McDermott used three three-pointers to post 11 points. He added seven rebounds. Aaron Thompson had five points, seven assists, and three steals.

The Bulldogs shot 49 percent, while holding Arkansas to a 36-percent clip. While Butler hit 11 three-pointers, the Razorbacks made only 4-of-18 from behind the arc.

Barford led Arkansas (23-12) with 15 points.

Sunday's game time and TV assignment will be announced later Friday evening.
