(24)The Cumerlands 75 Shawnee 63

Williamsburg, KY – In what served as the finale home game for the 24-ranked Patriots men's basketball team, their senior class combined for 36 points, 17 rebounds, and 11 assists to lead UC to a 75-63 conference win over Shawnee State Thursday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. With the win the Patriots improve to 21-7 overall and 8-5 in conference play, while the Phoenix move to 14-15 overall and 4-9 against the MSC.

Both teams struggled offensive to start the game as both squads hit a pair of field goals in first five minutes to make it 4-4. Shawnee State hit a jumper, before Taylor Gover connected with Anthony Eaves for a three-pointer to give Cumberlands its first lead of the contest 7-6 with 13:14 remaining. The Bears scored six unanswered points to take a five point lead, their largest of the game, midway through the first half. UC responded as Will Gary found Chance Morton behind-the-arc for a three. The two teams traded buckets before Jayllen Carter's field goal gave Shawnee State a 16-12 lead with 7:13 left. Cumberlands took over from that point as they closed out the half on an 18-4 run, including nine straight points to start the run, to take a 29-21 lead into the break.

The Patriots carried the momentum into the second half and on UC's first possession Will Gary pulled up drained a three-pointer to make it an 11 point lead. The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes until Travon Lebranche sank back-to-back field goals to give Cumberlands a 44-29 advantage with 12:42 remaining. Gover, Eric Duncan, and Eaves all hit from long range to extend the lead to 54-34, midway through the second half. Three minutes later, back-to-back buckets from Colvin-Seldon and Bernard Samuel gave the Patriots the largest lead of the game at 60-37 with 7:06 remaining. Shawnee State went on a 19-6 run, over the next four minutes, to cut the lead to 66-56 with 2:06 remaining. The Patriots responded as Samuel drove to the rim and laid it in, before Samuel connected with Colvin-Seldon for a three-point play to put UC's ahead 71-56. Colvin-Seldon made a dunk on the Patriots next possession and then found Morton for the slam to give Cumberlands the 75-63 win.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Colvin-Seldon, who netted 14 points and nine rebounds. Duncan and Labranche finished with 14 points apiece, while Eaves chipped in 11. Morton tallied eight points and seven boards, while Samuel netted eight points and dished out a pair of assists.

The Patriots return to the court Saturday, February 24, when they travel to Pikeville to face the third-ranked Bears in their regular season finale. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and live stats are available here.
