(20) Michigan 83 Wisconsin 72
#1
MADISON, Wisconsin -- The 20th-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team led wire-to-wire as it topped Wisconsin, 83-72, on Sunday afternoon at Kohl Center. U-M built a 22-point halftime lead and withstood a second-half comeback attempt by the Badgers to win in Madison for just the second time since 2000.

Junior Moritz Wagner scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his seventh career double-double. Senior Duncan Robinson scored 16 points, senior Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman added 15 points and junior Charles Matthews chipped in 11 points in the victory.

U-M raced out to a 15-2 lead in the opening four-and-a-half minutes of the contest. Five different players scored and the Wolverines made a trio of three-pointers as they quickly built a 13-point lead with 14:28 to play in the first half.

Back-to-back triples from Wagner and Robinson helped the Michigan advantage grow to 33-15 as the Maize and Blue opened the contest 12-of-16 from the field, including 7-of-9 from behind the three-point line.

A 7-0 run to close the first half gave U-M a 44-22 lead at the intermission as the Maize and Blue held Wisconsin scoreless for more than four minutes to close the opening stanza.

Robinson led the Wolverines with 14 points in the first half as U-M shot 65.4 percent (17-of-26) in the first 20 minutes, including 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from three-point range.

Wisconsin scored six of the first eight points to open the second half, but U-M answered with the next seven as Michigan took a 25-point lead, 53-28, on a basket by sophomore Jon Teske with just over five minutes taken off the clock in the second half.

With the Wolverines leading by 23, the Badgers went on a 16-4 run, making seven consecutive field-goal attempts, to cut the U-M advantage to 62-51 with 7:42 to play.

Wisconsin would trim the Michigan lead to as little as seven in the final minute, but U-M made its final eight free-throw attempts to hold off any hopes of a Badger comeback.

Ethan Happ led Wisconsin with a game-high 29 points as Wisconsin shot 60 percent (18-of-30) from the field in the second half.

Michigan will return to Crisler Center for its next matchup when they take on the Iowa Hawkeyes on Wednesday (Feb. 14). It is the second meeting in the regular season, as the Wolverines won, 75-68, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Jan. 2. Wednesday's contest is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
