Defiance, Ohio – The Transylvania men's basketball team used a 13-4 run midway deep in the second half to pull away from the Defiance College Yellow Jackets for a 83-77 win Saturday afternoon at the Karl H. Weaner Center.

After trailing by a point at halftime, the Pioneers forged onward with the Yellow Jackets in a tight game until the 7:00 minute mark of the second half when Transylvania went on an impactful run to create separation for the rest of the afternoon.

The Pioneers improved to 16-7 overall and 11-5 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the win. Defiance dropped to 3-20 overall and 2-14 in conference play. The Pioneers hold sole possession of fourth place, sitting back of Hanover, Mt. St. Joseph, and Rose-Hulman who all are tied with each other with identical records of 13-3 in conference play.

The desperate Yellow Jackets pulled within two of the Pioneers at 62-60 with 7:15 left in the game before sophomore guard Spencer McKinney hit a runner to begin the most significant run of the game for the Pioneers. McKinney hit two free throws on the following possession and senior big man Robert Dence scored inside to stretch Transylvania's lead to 68-60 with 5:18 remaining in regulation.

Junior guard Cooper Theobald scored on a three-point play to continue the scoring run, and Dence and fellow big man, junior Kyle Gullett scored again to build a 75-63 lead for the Pioneers with 2:23 as Transy secured the win.

Gullett led the way with 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor. Dence added 11 points off the bench to go with eight rebounds. Junior forward Bo Schuh had 11 points while sophomore guard Gabe Schmitt scored 14 points to go with four assists and three rebounds.
