BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – After a sluggish start, Union College used a dominating second quarter to propel it to a convincing 93-73 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) win over visiting Columbia (S.C.) on Saturday.

The win improves Union to 11-14 overall and 8-12 in the AAC. Columbia drops to 4-21 overall and 4-17 in league play.

Columbia got off to a hot start with six points from Morgan Varn and five from Amber Sherrill to open up a 13-3 advantage with 4:53 left in the first. A 5-0 spurt pulled Union within 13-8, but Sherrill scored eight points in a 9-4 stretch to give Columbia a 22-12 lead at the 1:36 mark. The Bulldogs, though, closed the period on another 5-0 run to head into the second down 22-17.

The Koalas struck first in the second, stretching their lead to 24-17. But a 12-2 run sent Union up 29-25 with 5:11 left in the half.

Columbia hit 3-of-4 free throws to pull within 29-28 with 3:47 to play; yet Union closed out the period on a 17-0 run to take a commanding 46-28 lead. Logan Calvert (FR/Louisville, Ky.) netted seven points during the decisive rally.

In the second half, once Union pushed the lead to over 20 points, Columbia was able to get the margin down to 18. The Bulldogs outscored the Koalas 47-45 in the second half en route to the 93-73 victory.

Four Bulldogs scored in double figures with Calvert's 21 leading the way. She hit 9-of-13 from the field in registering her fifth 20-point game of the season.

Sidney Dishman (FR/Helenwood, Tenn.) followed with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and going 3-for-5 from long range. Dannika Prater (JR/Clarksville, Tenn.) and Chariss Wilson (FR/Paris, Ky.) rounded things out with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Brooke Hammonds (FR/Pennington Gap, Va. ) nearly had another double-double with eight points and team-high 11 rebounds.

Union was impressive from behind the arc, going 12-for-25 (48 percent). Columbia went 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) on its 3-point attempts.

Varn paced Columbia with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Sherrill knocked in 18 points. Denijah Johnson helped out with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Union returns to action Wednesday when it plays host to Bluefield (Va.) in AAC action. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
