WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest men's basketball overcame a 10-point deficit to earn a 76-72 victory over Florida State Wednesday night at the LJVM Coliseum.
The victory snapped a season-long seven-game losing streak for the Demon Deacons (9-13, 2-8 ACC) while also breaking a five-game losing streak to the Seminoles (16-6, 5-5 ACC) that dated back to the 2012-13 season. The Deacs also halted Florida State's three-game win streak.
The Deacs found themselves down 10 points with 3:27 remaining in the first half. However, the offense shot 57 percent from beyond the arc and 52 percent from the field in the second half on their way to the victory. The 10-point deficit was the largest deficit overcome in a win this season.
Bryant Crawford racked up 19 points, his 21st double-figure point game this season. Crawford also added a game-high seven assists, two shy of matching his season high.
Keyshawn Woods recorded his first double-digit game since scoring 15 on Jan. 13 at Duke with 15 points. Woods went 5-of-9 from the floor en route to his 14th double-digit point total of the season.
Chaundee Brown also finished with 15 points. Brown has tallied double figures in seven games this season, four of which have been in conference play.
Brandon Childress rounded out the double-digit Deacs with 14 points. Childress went 6-for-7 from the free throw line, including a perfect 4-for-4 in the second half, to match a career-high with six made free throws.
The teams traded baskets to open scoring in the first half, with Childress knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers for the Deacons. The opening four minutes consisted of five lead changes before consecutive baskets from Crawford gave the Deacs a 10-7 lead with 15 minutes left in the half. From there, the Deacons either led or were tied with the Seminoles until Florida State's CJ Walker hit a 3-pointer to go up 19-17 with 11 minutes to go. The Noles then hit 6-of-7 to take an eight-point lead. Wake Forest managed to cut the lead to five on two occasions, but the Seminoles used four quick points to take a 10-point lead at 37-27 with three minutes left in the half. Down nine with time running out, Woods hit a triple at the buzzer to cut Florida State's lead to six, 39-33, at halftime.
Terrence Thompson opened the second half with a layup-and-one to cut down the Seminoles' lead to three, while a jumper from Childress trimmed it to 41-40. After trailing for almost 16 minutes of play, Brown hit a three-pointer to tie it up at 43-all with under 16 minutes to. After trading baskets, Crawford hit a triple of his own to give the Deacons their first lead since 11:39 left in the first half while Woods extended that lead to four-points, 51-47.
The shots continued to fall for the Deacs, as they took a six-point lead, their largest of the night, at 63-57 with eight minutes to play. However, Florida State managed to regain the lead at 70-69 with under two minutes to go. Crawford knocked down a pair of free throws to reclaim a 71-70 edge with 1:18 left on the clock and began a back-and-forth battle for the remaining minute. However, Florida State missed a pair of free throws down the stretch, allowing for Doral Moore to dunk the ball with 18.9 seconds remaining to put the Deacs up 75-72. With 2.3 seconds to go, Moore split a pair of free to put the game out of reach for the Seminoles and give the Deacs a 76-72 victory.
Moore pulled down double-digit rebounds for the fifth-straight game. He finished tonight with a game-high 12 boards to go along with eight points and three blocks.
