Transylvania 76 Manchester 69
#1
Lexington, Ky. – Junior guard Gabe Schmitt caught fire from the outside to lead the Transylvania men's basketball team to a 76-69 victory against the Manchester University Spartans Saturday afternoon at the Beck Center.

Schmitt shot 4-for-5 from beyond the arc to score a game-high 21 points while shooting 6-for-9 from the floor overall.

Junior forward Kyle Gullett had a 7-for-13 night from the field as he added 17 points while junior guard Cooper Theobald scored 10 points, all on free throw attempts.

The Pioneers improved to 11-2 on the year and 6-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Spartans dropped to 2-13 overall on the season and 0-8 in conference play.

Transylvania began creating separation five minutes into the game as freshman forward Will Anderson canned a jumper and Schmitt followed with his first three-point make of the afternoon, giving Transy a 13-7 advantage.

Anderson and Gullett took turns converting inside as the Pioneers surged ahead 20-9 eight minutes into the contest.

The Spartans swung back towards the end of the half, cutting Transylvania's lead back to 10 points but senior Tristan Burgess hit a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to put the Pioneers back ahead by 13.

Transylvania built back a 20-point lead in the second half as Gullett began hitting from inside and outside; freshman guard Michael Jefferson converted on a runner with 13:41 remaining in the contest to provide Transylvania with its largest lead of the night at 56-36.

Manchester went on an extended run the rest of the afternoon as the Spartans took advantage of some late Transylvania turnovers and missed shots at the foul line. The Spartans pulled within eight points of the Pioneers with 2:05 remaining in regulation but Gullett struck again inside on a layup on the following possession to put the game out of reach.

Senior forward Robert Dence posted a team-high 10 rebounds to go with seven points. Anderson had a career-high eight points off the bench for the Pioneers in 20 minutes of work.

Transylvania returns to action next Wednesday, January 17, visiting the Franklin College Grizzlies in Franklin, Indiana. The HCAC conference matchup is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
