Just wondering if there were any officials that actually post in here?
11-13-2017, 12:12 AM
They don't make strong enough glasses for them to see such small writing on computers.
11-13-2017, 12:12 AM
There are several but they don't want to be recognized.
nicker:
I used to have my officiating license. I got them so long ago that you HAD to get a combo football and basketball at the same time. lol

Lol! But I don't blame them, even if you are a 'good official' I know you're still going to have enemies. haha. I was going to start officiating some at the youth level but coaching middle school and youth I don't know if I have time. I wouldn't want to officiate out of county, being a coach and having bias issues come up, or someone accusing.
I also wondered if anyone here officiated our game last Friday...
Lol a combo license. I would be fired in the first quarter trying to officiate a basketball game.

If you watch the posts carefully they will sometimes give themselves away. When a poster questions a call, and another answers on the defensive, you sort of wonder.

I do. You will never have anyone get on here and admit that though. Its against âthe rulesâ

Officiating is a tough job. Iâll be the first to say there are some out there with agendas. A small number. The 99% though do it ethically and the best they can. We forget a lot of these calls are judgement call. Theyâre hard to make. Like everyone else in their careers they make mistakes. Iâm a big fan of the human element to the game. I like instant replays but in limited fashion. Itâs beginning to become every play is looked at. If we are gonna do that then why have the officials on the field? Iâd be in favor of actually having it in the HS level to use as an AIDE, but itâll never happen because itâs just to much money. I think a lot of people are to hard on refs. We got screwed bad against bell co this week. A blatant pass interference that was called, several offsides. One of our players suspended for this weeks game. But hey thatâs part of it, itâs what makes HS football what it is. Causes emotion in the game. And gives us something to b!tch about on here haha😉

Suspension was well earned, hard to argue that.

Oh I agree with the suspension. Itâs how it come to be. When a player starts hitting another player in the balls, weâll any man here would do the same thing the corbin kid did! Thatâs all Iâm gonna say about that. But yea, if you break certain rules you pay the price. But like I said, should have never come to that point

The hardest thing about officiating is not knowing what to flag but when to flag. If you called a penalty every time a player lined up 3 inches off sides, or every hold that was 45 yards away from the point of attack then there would be 300 flags and it would take 2 days to play the games. JMO

JMONo youâre absolutely right. If it doesnât effect the play and itâs not a saftey issue then it shouldnât be thrown. The problem is, like i stated above, judgement on when it does effect the play. Like you said, there is holding every single play. Hell out coach used to give us each ONE per game. But does it need to be called on the backside tackle on a run play? Itâs up to that individual

Wearing the stripes is a tough gig. Your never right, almost always wrong and someone always complains. Judgment calls in the heat of the moment, its not easy id say. What little umping Ive done at youth level showed me real fast that I would not want the job.

The biggest problem with high school officials has been, and always will be, favoritism.
A couple of guidelines and safe guards should be setup IMO.
1. Officials cannot officiate any games where they are an alumnis of, or have any immediate family who is currently or has been associated with the school.
2. You cannot officiate in the county you currently reside.
3. You cannot officiate in any county you grew up in.
4. Officials may not have contact with any coach at any school while in season.
5. You cannot work with the exact same crew more than once per season.
6. Officials cannot call off-season games, AAU, travel ball, etc.
This would apply only for high school.
This obviously would be near impossible with the "shortage" Of refs, but it would solve a lot of problems and hush a lot of rumors yearly.

Thanks..I like to think I did a pretty good job. Most people thought so. nothing like coaching young kids. I love youth sports at all levels but its really fun to watch the young kids play and learn the game.

I agree with almost everything said here. My dilemma, and not wanting to hurt a man's earnings, but the dilemma of when to report officiating? How bad would it really have to be? I'm not talking judgement calls, but procedural rules, that happen all night long, etc..? I have found good officials will listen if you make them aware of certain things, at least they'll start looking out for it. What if an official actually verbally told someone "someone is going to win this game tonight, and it's not gonna be you?"...I mean, hypothetically speaking...

Overall officiating is pretty solid in state of KY.

I had a basketball official come to me during warmups and say, "I'm going to be watching you big boy." I think I fouled out before the tipoff.

Wow! That's just wrong! Any prior animosity from or towards that official?

He was a coach from another team that was reffereeing our game. So yeah there was probably some animosity when you hang 30 points on him. I honestly did foul out early in the third quarter and I was in either fifth or sixth grade.

That use to be common practice back in the 90s.
I had several refs look at me during warm ups and tell me I "better keep it clean today."
I don't see that anymore.

I once fouled out in 34 seconds of a game time on the floor.

I have an issue with officials not being in shape. Many are so overweight that they cannot possibly keep up with the game and are often out of position to make the proper calls. This is an issue with soccer as well, Old or overweight AR's who cannot keep up with the players and have no angle to make a good off sides call. If these folks want to officiate, get in the shape it takes to do the job well.

Personally I feel like working with the same ones make for better crews. You know what the other guys are going to do and it helps the crew be more consistent. The crew I worked on had a weak head linesman and a weak umpire. But the white hat, back judge and me realized this and covered up their mistakes a lot.:biglmao:

Yea Iâm with you on the crew part. Youâll get more consistency that way. I also think youâll more accountability that way too
