CINCINNATI, Ohio -- No. 6 Lindsey Wilson football got scores from the offense, defense and special teams today in a 56-7 win over Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) at Stargel Stadium.
Joe Lewis scooped and scored for the Blue Raider defense and Quinten Brown scored on a punt return while the Lindsey Wilson offense scored six touchdowns en route to winning its Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division opener.
Lewis opened the scoring after Trent Mueller stripped the ball in the Eagles' opening drive. Lewis recovered the fumble and ran 72 yards to paydirt to give the Blue Raiders the 6-0 lead. Zak Mizell made it 8-0 with a two-point conversion run.
The score was Lewis' second of his career -- both coming this season.
The Lindsey Wilson offense took over, scoring on its next five possessions.
Payton Veraldi -- starting his first career game -- led the Blue Raider offense with four touchdown tosses to four different Lindsey Wilson receivers.
Veraldi connected with Brown, Charles Gaines and Corey Smith for touchdowns in the first half. Gaines hauled in a 46-yard score down the left sideline, Brown caught a 54-yard strike and Smith pulled in a 31-yard scoring grab, all three giving the Blue Raiders a 28-0 lead.
Xavier Abernathy provided the lone rushing touchdown of the half with 1:12 remaining to give the Blue Raiders a 35-0 halftime lead.
While the Lindsey Wilson offense was clicking the Blue Raider defense limited the Eagles (0-5, 0-1 MSC Bluegrass) to just 140 yards in the half despite Cincinnati Christian keeping the ball for nearly 22 minutes.
Jay Gaudlock provided a video-game touchdown on the first Lindsey Wilson drive of the second half. Gaudlock caught a pass over the middle where he spun away from a CCU defender, broke a tackle and then outran the defense up the sideline for the 44-yard touchdown.
Veraldi finished 8-of-12 for 210 yards and the four scores.
Cincinnati Christian scored for the first time in two games in the series against Lindsey Wilson with 6:06 left. Nate Syzmanski found Mason Chapman in the front of the end zone to trim the deficit to 42-7.
Lindsey Wilson tacked on two more scores in the final five minutes.
Cameron Dukes connected with George Gregory for a six-yard touchdown to push the lead to 49-7. The touchdown was career firsts for Dukes and Gregory.
Brown provided the exclamation point with his second touchdown of the day as he returned a punt 66 yards for a score and a 56-7 win. The punt-return touchdown was the sixth in the program's history and the first since the 2015 season.
Lindsey Wilson outgained the Eagles 397-246 in the game despite running 16 fewer plays. The Blue Raiders enjoyed a 12-yard starting field position advantage along with the defensive and special teams' scores.
Blake Ingleton led a Blue Raider rushing attack that rushed for 161 yards. He had 70 of those rushing yards. Not only did the Lindsey Wilson offensive line help the ground game surpass 160 yards, they also did not allow a sack.
The Blue Raider defense matched a season-high with nine tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks in the win. Mueller led the team with nine tackles, including two for a loss. Lewis added six tackles, two tackles for a loss and a sack to his scoop and score.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, October 14, as the Blue Raiders travel to Kentucky Christian in Grayson, Ky.
