West is first in its region in Ohio after beginning the season at 4-0.

Their opponents have a combined record of 8-8. Can't overlook an undefeated team by any means, but hardly world-beaters. RAM opponents combined record: 13-10. Not world beaters either.

Portsmouth West 2017 Football (4-0)
8/25 H Fairland (1-3) W 20-18
9/1 H Portsmouth (2-2) W 32-14
9/8 A Coal Grove (3-1) W 28-6
9/15 A Wellston (2-2) W 31-6

Raceland Opponents:

Lawrence Co. 4-1
Ashland 3-2
West Carter 2-2
Greenup Co. 3-2
Valley 1-3

Having said that, the game really comes down to matchups, & who controls the line of scrimmage, pretty much every week. I think it will be a good game, but I expect the RAMS to win at home.

Based on how the defense has played this season it would really surprise me to see them give up that many points. This defensive unit is tough and they haven't given up a point since the second quarter of the Ashland game. I'm not sure what West has offensively but I think they will have to have some fire power to put up that many points on the Raceland defense.

Looking for the Rams to take this one at home!

Raceland's defense is playing some really good ball right now. They are almost in shut down mode in the passing game and they bend but don't break against the run. They have held two 120 yard rushers to less than 80 yards in the last two weeks which is a statement seeing what they gave up against the run against Lawrence and Ashland. The defense hasn't been scored on in 14 quarters. Pretty good if u ask me. I don't think Portsmouth is as tough as their record shows. OVC and generally all of South east ohio is way down, even Wheelersburg isn't as good as they usually are, and Ironton got shut out by Ashland last night. That being said this Raceland team hasn't even come close to playing 4 quarters of football. Games like last night are great for numbers and confidence building, but it's not a testiment to the Rams being a real contender in the east yet, imo. Port West is a much more solid defensive squad than we have see ln the last two weeks so the offense will need to be polished and effecient. Going with the Rams at home thought.

fyi

West is in the SOC and not the OVC.

Wheelersburg is also in the SOC.

It is my understanding that Wheelersburg has a team that can win the state championship this year. They have a big game against undefeated Jackson this week.

Just going by what I was told in regards to Wheelersburg. Either way, South eastern OH and neky football outside of Johnson Central and Wheelersburg, is way down to what it was 2 or 3 years ago

West was down to Portsmouth 14-3 before storming back with 29 points in the 4th quarter to win 32-14.

I would not take West lightly.

I'm sure the Raceland coaching staff will have them prepared for this game and won't allow them to take this team lightly. Last season this was a tough game and both sides got a little chippy with each other. I look for this game to be tough as well and I expect to see some pads popping on both sides. I think the Rams will win but West will make them earn it.

Hopefully Raceland will begin to hit their stride offensively. The defense has been consistent all year. Our defense week in and week out is very solid, especially in the redzone. Even when we have given up yards, we haven't given up alot of points. Offensively, we have been very inconsistent. But it looks like we are coming along in that department. But we are going to find out what we are made of over the next couple weeks. Port West and Somerset have really solid or very good defenses that should tell us a little bit about where our offense stands. Bc thus far, Ashland is the most well rounded defense we have seen this year and we struggled to do much of anything. The defense did more than enough to win that game. Lots of weapons, but using those weapons seems to be a but if a head scratcher in regards to play calling. But, now is the time to start putting it all together.

I will say the offense has done a good job at controlling the tempo and sustaining drives. After some thought, the numbers don't really show that. We aren't having 150+ yard rushers and Damon isn't throwing for 200 yards a game, but they are taking care of the football. Having Lemaster's accuracy is a major plus in the redzone as well. I may have been a bit harsh.

Portsmouth west is actually ranked higher than Wheelersburg in their region by points. Wheelersburg is ranked higher in the Ohio AP poll though.

Won't be a walk in the park by any means. Hopefully the O-line for the Rams can really step up this game. PW always seems to play physical. This week should test the o-line we shall see. I think Rams win in a close one.
