The EVERYBODY COUNTS Program
#1
Anyways, I had all of these programs when I was in grade school, but never really thought anything of it. Tomorrow, I got invited to a grade school so kids could see how I am, how I communicate, and how I get around. I'm happy to do it, I want to help people for the rest of my life by giving my presentation and any other way possible (I'm not giving my presentation tomorrow, just saying I want to do that forever to help people), but the thing is, I'm not like any other handicapped person that I've ever met. I joke about things that some people might think would offend me, I laugh about the way I am and I flaunt my awesome seats at Bengals games.

Should I just be myself and be the fun me or should I act like more of a conservative person who struggles in life? I do struggle in life, I don't want to be the way I am, but I am this way, so there's nothing I can do about it except enjoy life, so how do I act towards these kids? Someone please help me

I have 2 children and have been around kids all my life coaching pee wee teams. One thing I have found out is you cant fool kids they will see right through you. Show them you have fun and are fun to be around . Show them that being handicapped does not mean your mind is handicapped you can talk sports, play video games , go to Bengals games , whatever . Being handicapped DOES NOT mean you cant enjoy life. One of the assistant coaches at Magoffin is handicapped he has a really hard time getting around also and i believe he told me he has missed 3 games in like 15 years and is there at every practice . I have never seen anybody that enjoys a ball game like that man . Dont patrinise these kids be yourself tell a joke show them your no different than them , it just takes you a little longer to get there.

Like The Fan said, be yourself. If you make it out that EVERYTHING is harder than it really is for you then you will put off a bad image of handicapped people in general. These kids may be afraid of people in wheelchairs, it is kind of intimidating at first so just show them how you are funny and just be yourself.
