Just a bit of conversation for the football forum. Russell has Greenup, West Carter, Ashland, Lewis County and Simon Kenton at home this year. Which team do you think has a legitimate chance at stopping the home win streak?

I think it will have to wait until 2008.
The teams that have the best chance would be Ashland or Simon Kenton. I don't see either stopping it though.

Russell and Ashland both lost a lot of seniors and starters off of last year's great game. It should be another great game this season.
Which starters will Russell be returning on offense and defense this season?

I know Ashland lost a ton of players to graduation last year. How many did Russell lose to graduation?

Don't know the exact number but it was in the 20's.

Jones QB/DE, Hicks T, Harvey DL, Foster G, Cornwell NG, Barnes T,
6 returning starters. 7 if you consider Jones started both ways.
What alot of people are excited about though are some of the younger players that got ALOT of playing time as backups last season. Many players, too many to list, were very impressive in their rolls as backups and sometimes starters. The soph and Freshman classes were very strong.

Ashland only returns 5 of 25 starters (if you include place kicker, kickoff, and punter).
Darrell Mahan returns as QB/P
Matt Thomas returns as RB/DB
Ryan Bonner returns as TE
Should be a great game. I give a slight edge to Ashland with the returning starters just because I think Mahan, Thomas, and Bonner will be bigger impact players than Jones and company.
As for the newcomers, the edge has to go to Russell because of the extensive playing time they received last year as backups.

I think Russell stands the best chance of losing to Ashland or West Carter....I know a lot of good college players come out of those schools, but in all honesty, I think well have to wait awhile to see them get beat at home....possibly 08'.

I think I would give Russell the edge in the returning starters as well. They return 3 of 5 from pretty good offensive line in Hicks, Barnes and Foster. Harvey, Cornwell and Jones from the defensive front five. Jones is as good as anybody in the area and a front runner for POY in the area next season.

Ashland has a chance as they always do.
But West Carter? LOL
If Russell looses to West Carter anywhere, much less at home, they might as well close the football program.
That would be worse than UK loosing to Vandy on their home court.
Russell will never loose a football game to West Carter or Lewis County.
If they do, I'll be on suicide watch.

Don't be so confident .. Kasey Clark graduated .. Any thing can happen on any giving night .. As for the home winning streak being snapped I see Ashland breaking it in 07.

And two years ago Josh Gross graduated. And years before that other great players graduated. If you think that Kasey Clark was the whole team then you do not know Russell football very well. Russell can play running back by commitee. If there is a super star there then he will get the glory. If not then they will take who they have and make them work into the Russell system. Russell will be fine without Clark there.
I see Ashland being the biggest challenge to break the win streak.

Ashland....what week is this game?? Pikeville may need to game plan from it lol??

normally ashland and russell play week 3 of the season. it is usually ashland's 3rd game and russell's 2nd.
last year ashland played raceland, then belfry, then russell
the raceland and russell games continue for this season, but belfry was not renewed
my best guess is that pikeville will be playing ashland the week before they play russell

First of all the thread is who will break the home win streak. Second Powell is no longer in Russells district so I guess we can get over the fear of Powell beating up on us. Third the only remote possibility that Russell and Powell will meet would have to be deep into the playoffs. Sorry I just don't see that happening.
02-05-2007, 09:21 PM
powell dont even have a coach, not to mention a descent team. the best team they ever had was in 98 from what ive heard
02-05-2007, 11:40 PM
Russell would stomp us .. thank god were not in there district no more .. stupid post the college one

Umm, I thought he was but he is listed as a junior on the roster.

Dude, Russell's 8th grade team could beat Powell Co. The smartest thing PC could do now that their coach has left is fold up the program and hope to be competetive in soccer.

DevilsWin Wrote:Dude, Russell's 8th grade team could beat Powell Co. The smartest thing PC could do now that their coach has left is fold up the program and hope to be competetive in soccer.
That was a little harsh. What They need to do is dedicate themselves to building a program. Starting with the Elementary schools and getting people to care. I don't want to see and program fold up.
02-06-2007, 02:44 PM
Ok maybe I was a little harsh. The PC program needs alot, I meant alot of work. Have you seen the number of kids they dress for a football game? Fairview has more kids out for football. And Powell Co has to moved up to 3 A next year with Russell, Fleming Co, and Breathitt Co. They'll never be competetive if they can't get 70 or more players to come out for football.
I hate to see a program fold too but PC needs to take a long look at their program.

02-06-2007, 04:01 PM
Yes, I saw how many kids they dressed this year. I think it was 26. Very low numbers. Which is why they need to start getting kids interested in football when they are younger.
Get a good feeder system going and you can build upon it. IMO Russell's JFL program is a big contributor to the success of the high school program. It gets alot of kids interested in football at a young age and those kids dream of playing for Russell when they get older.

Anyway, They(PC) won't break the Russell Home streak. Wrong District. If they play Russell it would only be in the 3rd round of play-offs after they have beat Fleming Co, Breathitt Co and Estill Co. Not gonna happen.
