Lets hear it, which local station has the best announcers for High School Basketball. Tell us who you like and why.
I will give you my opinion. There are several I enjoy, but I really like Jamin Jamey and his partner (I think his name is Tommy Dingus) @ WMDJ. They speak positive about the kids and yet giving an accurate account of the game. JMO

Spike at WSIP 98.9 in Paintsville is very good. He has been covering the Golden Eagles for as long as I can remember. His tone of voice along with the play by play brings a lot of excitement to his listeners. He actually makes you feel like you are at the game. He tells it like it is and I think he is probably one of the more respected radio announcers in the mountains.

I would have to agree with you. WMDJ does an excellent job, Jamey and Tommy talk about the kids and coaches in such a positive way and know what they are talking about and are not bias at all. And they do a great job with the statistics as well.

WKCB 'THE KILLER B' 107.1 in Hindman do a great job covering all the Knott Co. teams KCC, Cordia, & JBS. They also try to cover others as well. Harold, Drum, & Doc and now Ken Fugate all do a great job. They even let that idiot, Tim Cornett help sometimes. They all know the game, players, and coaches and have been doing it for many years.

Who ever says wmdj talks positive, is not listening to them very well. They are the worlds worst for not knowing what is really happening and telling their beliefs about it. At least WPRG and WSIP will be man enough to say they are not sure what is going on but will try and find out. Only if you play or are a fan of AC do they talk positive. WSIP and WPRG with WPRG being the best about not siding with one team or another when they are announcing.

Gotta disagree with ya on this one. I do not play for AC nor are they "my" team. I have listened to Jamin Jamey and Tommy during AC games and if anything they are more critical on them. Anyway, this is just my opinion.

Seems as if everyone is going to go with the guys that cover their school on a regular basis.
01-19-2007, 02:40 AM
I like WSIP with Spike and Danny, the only thing with those guys is when your listening they get so caught up in the game at times they forget to tell you the score. I would have to agree with BC Connection on this one though. WMDJ does a variety of 58 district games not just one school.

There is a huge difference.
I know some great sports writers who can't verbalize a complete sentence.

John doug Miller does the Paintsville games. IMO he's one of the best around.
01-19-2007, 11:02 AM
well they are the worst IMO everyone has their own but to me you got to now the game a little better then wmdj does just for me. They are more bias then any other station, I agree some like danny ands spike get caught up in the action some times and that is alright and the one from knott co. (hindmen does a great job0 but I have listen to two game this year that I know for a FACT WMDJ did not know what was going on but still made comments on the radio about the players and coaches and their job should be to promote this individuals not make everyone think certain things when they do not know what is going on for sure.

You are more than welcome to come to our radio booth and enlighten us and show who you are instead of hiding behind a fake name on a discussion board. I'll even buy you a Dr. Pepper. :howdy:
Thanks for the good comments from those in this thread about WMDJ. I think I speak for every broadcaster when I say we all appreciate your loyalty to your station of choice and hope that we support your school in a positive light, while never sugarcoating the truth when things aren't going so good. We don't get paid much money and none of us do it for the dough, we do it because we love sports and want to support the kids and help them, be it through encouragement or calling it like you see it.
I would like to say it's a pleasure to work with other stations and their colleagues at games: Ken Hall at WPRG, Danny and Guys from WSIP, Jaime and the Crew and Q-95 and Joe Kinzer and everyone from WDHR.
Mountain sports is represented well by our local media...

I would just like to say that I am very grateful that WMDJ and their staff and management elect to do local games (South Floyd and Allen Central primarily).
I know it's a business and they would't do it if they couldn't make a little bit of money...but still, I think if the people on the Beaver Creeks waited for a Prestonsburg station to carry one of their games (unless it's against PBURG)...the games would be few and far between.
I truly enjoy listening to Jamey and Tommy...I think they are very objective about their subtle, fair and interesting points they interject during their broadcasts. I don't think they just show up and do the games. They do their homework about the current trends with each teams players.
The past few years have been very tough ones for AC...but the guys tell it like it is...never making excuses for them. I would have to agree that they do try to make it a positive listening experience...when they can. Why not...the kids deserve that.
I suspect that anything that comes into the "complaint department" is probably out of the Prestonsburg area. Jamey and Tommy are big fans of all of the 58th district and 15th region teams. These guys are just plain sports junkies...try approaching one of them with your concerns before you criticize them for anything.
For my money...I'd like to hear them do the Reds games!
It would be very cool to hear them do some high school baseball and softball games in the future. I know that competes with the Reds though.
Anyway, big thumbs up guys! I am in no way a "homer" for these guys...I just appreciate what they are doing. Big thanks to Dale McKinney also.

I wish Dale McKinney was still doing games, as he was the best around at calling the action. He was one that told it like it is, how a player would take a horrible shot, or this team was playing very bad at the time, and it did TICK some people off who were listening, to put it nicely, but just like Cawood, he was just calling what he saw.
Bill Doug Taylor at WDHR was another who was very good at calling a game. No one calls them like these 2 men did anymore.
One person who I think is very good, and could be one of the best around in the whole sports broadcasting thing, is Marc Hall. I remember when he worked at at the station in Harrodsburg and did the games there for the 3 local high schools. I think that was when his brother Stacey was coaching at Mercer Co. during that time. He knows his stuff. Loved his "Shakin' and Bakin' catch-phrase. I know Marc is about ready to graduate college in the broadcasting field, and he is getting ready to start working for ihigh.com doing video broadcasts and other broadcasts for them covering high school, and some college, stuff.

I live in Floyd Co. and have heard all of the stations announcers. As this is a "Who's the best" thread, I won't go into the the downfalls of most of the announcers. I will say when you listen to Andrew Joyce, Joe Kinzer, and most of the crews that call on WDHR, 103.1, and WXCC, you always know the score, who's in the lead, the quarter and the time. You can't say these things about most of the other stations and I have turned them off from frustration. A station has to be un biased when calling a game, and you dont find that many places.

For your information, the people I know on here from Pburg have praised WMDJ, they have done as many of the Cats games as Q-95. The only one that had anything bad to say about WMDJ was from the South Floyd area. Next time try to know what you talking about before you accuse people of saying negative things.
